A Huge Dress Mess

January 24th, 2011 @ 4:26 pm by Mrs. Biscuit

I was dress-less and restless for a long time during my process.  It’s really not a good way to be, as all the opinions, pros, and cons begin swimming through your mind and cause you to become VERY, VERY, VERY confused.

I had always thought I’d get married in a simple sheath dress, kind of like the Nicole Miller I had for a prom dress. Here’s an example of what I was looking for:

I love how classic and simple it is. However, I am about five inches too short to pull this off, which I realize now. My sheath idea went by the wayside when I went to Venice last summer with two of my bridesmaids, Carol and Amy. We saw this dress, and I fell in love:

My own photo. I was being a creeper.

I LOVELOVELOOOVEDD that dress! When I got back to the States, I scoured through the Kleinfeld website and Googled wedding dresses for hours on end with no luck finding this elusive dress. The search was not fruitless, however, as I discovered this gown:

For only $250!!!! OK, don’t judge me…this was while I was still green to everything wedding related and didn’t know about the cheap Chinese dress market and how I could get a very unfortunate looking dress, depending on the company. Once I realized this, I decided I needed to find who actually made that dress. After more hours of searching, I found out that the dress was Aurelie by Maggie Sottero. I loved her designs and was excited at how affordable she was. I found Ambrosia on her site and knew I was in love.

The flowers! The lace! The pickups! I was in love again. Then I found a very very Venice-like dress on Etsy:

Beautiful! I could order it in ivory…and at $825, it was a bargain for a custom-made dress. Unfortunately, my mother nixed this idea. She wanted me to be able to try on the dress before buying it. Oh well.

I was now in a state of total and utter confusion. How could I chose from such gorgeous dresses? Well, my first course of action was to go to a store and try them on. But that’s another post for another day.

How was the dress-shopping process for you? Did you have the same issues as me, or were you sure of what you wanted from the get-go?

Fortunately, I was totally sure of the one I wanted, as I fell in love with a dress I saw in a magazine (daydreaming) before I was even engaged. I can’t wait to see what you pick, though! It seems as if the dresses with the bottoms like the pink dress are becoming more popular, though, so maybe you can find it in some stores!

The Venice dress! Where all our wedding hopes and dreams started. It’s weird when I think back on Venice I don’t think of romance and love, I think about the 388488483 pigeons swirling overhead;)

I was definitely all over the place with dresses. I found a few I liked before heading into the shops, but the ones I went to didn’t have those specific dresses. After wading through a mound of dresses I finally found a keeper… but it was a process!

I ogled so many dresses before trying on a bunch. It is so hard from just the pictures! I love that one from the Etsy shop!

I was super sure about what I wanted BEFORE I set foot in the store. Once I started trying things on, my brain went haywire and my specific vision got thrown out the window. In the end, I eventually got back to something pretty similar to my starting point… I just took the scenic route :)

I saw a dress online- found a stockist- tried her on, and bought her then and there! But I know people think I am mad for this, and that I should have wanted to try on millions- but I just knew. Lots of luck on your dress hunt, all these gowns are beautiful :)

I’m so jealous of all you guys who had no trouble at all!
@ariel: Someone was just talking to me today about how much they liked Venice. Apparently they didn’t get dive bombed like we did.

The dress has been an interesting exercise in relinquishing control! I am having one of my best friends, an expert clothing designer/textile artist/seamstress extraordinaire, design and make my dress. And because I completely trust her vision and skills, I am directing her very little (basically, I told her that I didn’t want strapless, and that I wasn’t into huge poof).

The downside of this is that I didn’t get to go dress shopping or have “the one” moment, and I haven’t seen how different kinds of dresses look on me. The upside is that I will have a one-of-a-kind dress, designed specifically for my body and personality by someone I love. I tried on the muslin mock-up in December, and I think the dress will be amazing!

you might be able to work with the Etsy person on it by having muslin mock-ups. I had my dress custom-made and it was pretty fun :)

I had the same issue, sort of. I fell in love with a Saison Blanche gown online. Unfortunately, no one in Australia stocks this brand so no trying on before buying and I was ok with that. I looked at the dress every night before I went to bed, and if I have to be truely honest, dreamed about it. No one could talk me out of not buying it. Even my mother. It was “the dress”. I was always planning to try on wedding dresses similar at local boutiques just to be certain it would be the perfect style for my body. Well, I bought my wedding dress last week and it wasn’t my SB dress. When I went into my local boutique I really didn’t expect to find anything I loved more than my SB dress but I did. It’s perfect. As soon as I slipped it on, hadn’t even been done up, I knew it was the one.

@Mrs 2B: I’m so glad everything worked out for you! It’s crazy how you can get your mind completely set on something, then try something on and have it all wash away, huh?

I sort of had the opposite situation: when I started I had in mind big, layered dresses, but as I got more into the wedding planning I started to fall in love with the more simple, indie wedding dresses. Now I am pretty sure of what I want, and it’s very different from what I started with!
