Mrs. Husky's Picture
Mrs. Husky, Denver Age and Occupation: 26, Systems Administrator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Mechanical Engineer, recently laid off Engagement Date: August 14, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Rancho San Carlos About Me: I am planning a quirky-crafty wedding with my recently out-of-work fiancé for a (fingers crossed!) warm October afternoon. We are two self-professed nerds with an affinity for all things outdoors---be it rain, snow or shine. Recently relocated from the drizzly Northwest, we're enjoying the many sun-soaked days in the mile high city. Our day will be filled with both of our large families and friends, a self-served Cajun feast, and a Zydeco-style jazz band rocking beneath the beams of a historic red barn.
About Mrs. Husky

The toasts were over, and the band was ready. Mr. Husky and I prepared all four of our left feet to dance.

Our band played an amazing rendition of our song, and I must confess to a major wedding regret here.

We didn’t hire a videographer, and while I don’t necessarily regret that decision, I do regret my failure to consider how important it might be for me to have a recording of these few minutes. See, a lot of first dance songs tend to be pre-recorded songs—if we had chosen a DJ, we would likely have a copy of the version we decided to use.

But since our band arranged a completely unique version of this song, I’m afraid that I will never, ever again be able to hear the song we first swayed to as husband and wife. And I have to admit to feeling very sad about that.

We did ask a friend to videotape the ceremony for us, but it didn’t occur to me to ask for a first dance recording as well. The camera was securely stowed away immediately after the ceremony footage. My PSA here is not to suggest that you need a videographer—but only to tell you that, if having a friend film for you, seriously consider the moments you want recorded, and realize it may go beyond just the ceremony. Moving on…

It was so easy to get lost in one another, and the end of the song came too soon.

Our song ended, and it was time for the parent dances. I talked a while back about our decision to combine the Father-Daughter and Mother-Son dances, and both MIL Husky and Daddy Husky joined us on the dance floor.

Daddy Husky had changed into something a little more comfy, and was representing the Pacific NW!

Midway through the song, the band invited everyone else onto the dance floor. It got a lot more crowded, and I had the opportunity to share a dance with Step-Husky (who had also changed into more comfortable clothes).

Could you ask the band to record their version of the song and send it to you? Even if they just recorded it on youtube or something… it would be something you could keep and burn to a cd :)

I totally understand your regret. Its not that I wanted a videographer for the whole day, but I wish we had our ceremony on video! And I love your dress bustled!

Amen, sister, we have the same regret! How I wish we had been smart enough to ask a friend to record our first dance!

I hear you on the regret. We had a couple of friends videotape the ceremony and I wish I”d asked someone to record some reception stuff (like the toast) although I don’t think I was to see our “middle school sway” since we never made it to dance lessons!

I can see why you’d be disappointed, but your photographer did an excellent job capturing the moment. I know it doesn’t help with the song disappointment, but the emotion captured in the photos is beautiful.

@mightywombat: We danced to First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes, but our band was a New Orleans-style jazz band - so the style was quite different. :)

Love the “kiss-n-dip”. I’m in the same boat… my uncle-ographer taped the ceremony but not the reception. Luckily, one of Ryan’s buddies did tape our first dance on his cellphone and although its horrible quality, it makes me tear up everytime.

Can the band make a recording for you or is that a crazy idea?

Aww I love the photos! I can totally see why you’d want the video, though.

I completely, wholeheartedly agree with you on the video thing! We didn’t have a videographer. I would have loved one, but it didn’t happen. However, a guest did record our ceremony for us on her iPhone…high tech huh? Afterward though, I totally wish she would have captured more. Not her fault at all, since I didn’t even ask for the video in the first place, but hindsight is always 20/20!

What song was your combined father/daughter, mother/son dance?? I’m doing the same thing and a jazz band is playing whichever song we choose.
