The Anniversary Box

January 25th, 2011 @ 6:07 pm by Miss Oatmeal

I came across something a few months ago that just made my heart melt, and I instantly knew we had to incorporate this into our wedding. It’s called the Anniversary Box and can be found at Happily Ever AfterWords. Here is a description of it, taken from the website:

The keepsake box contains cards and envelopes labeled with the anniversary years 1 through 50. Given to friends and loved ones at any event surrounding the wedding ceremony, each piece of this fine stationery becomes a place for their thoughts — preserving a special written message to be kept in the box and read by a couple on the anniversary year indicated.

While this is very beautiful, I can’t see spending $95 on something I could make myself (and make it more in tune with our wedding style). So here are a few ideas I’ve had so far.

OK, OK…I know most of these are pretty expensive, and when you factor in the cost of the cards and envelopes, it would probably end up as much or more than the original one. But, if this is something we’re going to keep around for 50 years, I’d like to like it.

And in case you were wondering, here’s what I had in mind for the cards, envelopes, and a little something to note the anniversary year on the envelope.

We’ve thought about distributing these during our rehearsal dinner, since that’s when our closest friends and family will all be together. Isn’t this such a special idea? Both sets of Oatmeal parents celebrated their 30th anniversaries this year, and my grandparents just celebrated their 57th this month. The thought of opening up a sweet note from my grandparents on our 50th brings tears to my eyes.

What do you think? I know that it is stepping outside of the “box” (I couldn’t stop myself) a bit, but it seems so special!

So, hive, have you heard of this before? And did you incorporate anything extra special into your big day?

Not incredibly romantic, but I was at Ikea this past weekend and they had storage boxes that looked a lot like that last photo in various different sizes for cheap!

What a great idea! It helps organize, too. How special is it to read messages from the important people in your life. Wow, 30th and 57th. That’s quite amazing. Kirabee’s comment is very intriguing! I love IKEA and they have a storage box looks just like the last photo? Wow, I want to check that out! (Unfortunately I live in a city with no IKEA now. Bummer.)

I HAVE heard of this before, and we are planning to do it as well.

I am making the box myself (decorating a wooden box) and we are going to have the cards printed via Moo. The images will be pictures of us from the years we dated prior to getting married, as well as some engagement pictures.

I decided that it would be extra special to not only pull out a special piece of advice each year, but also a memory of us from the “early years”

Oh, I LOVE this!! I’ve been searching forever for a guestbook alternative that I like, and this might be it. (We’re having a small wedding, so 50 would be enough assuming some couples didn’t mind sharing.

Love this idea! I think it would add a little something special to open a note from family and loved ones on each anniversary! Such a great find Oatmeal!

I had a girlfriend who did something similar at her shower (or I suppose her bridesmaids did it for her :) ). There were cards for various occasions such as “first house”, “first baby”, and “first big fight”. It was fun to write out advice for them to look at in the future.

I saw this a while ago and like you, knew I had to have something like this! I think it’s such a fun thing to do on your anniversaries and those notes from parents and grandparents - irreplaceable.

My MOH organized this for us at our rehearsal dinner and it has been SO fun opening them. She didn’t go specifically by anniversary year, but rather let guests choose momentous life moments, so we’ve opened quite a few so far — “the day you get back from your honeymoon,” “your first married fight,” and “your first anniversary” have been a few. We still have a ton left like, “the day your first child is born,” “the day your oldest leaves for college,” and “the day your grandchild is born” (!!!). I totally recommend doing it.

I have been making these as wedding gifts for my close family and friends for a few years now. I only make 25 cards though because they are the extremely time consuming handmade decorative cards that you see sold in stores for $10 a piece. They come out great and I fall in love with each new design I come up with! Wish I would have had one for my wedding! Just celebrated our 1 year last week! We had people sugn fabric squares that are being made into a quilt by my MIL. We get to wrap up with our guests warm wishes and thoughts!
