Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance IT Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc Events About Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).

Our Almost Honeymoon Spot

January 25th, 2011 @ 6:32 pm by Mrs. Hippo

This weekend, we knocked another huge thing off of our to do list…booking our honeymoon! We were looking for a location that fit our top requirements:

  1. Warm weather: Since it is currently 20-something degrees in New York, we are jonesing for some sun. And it will still be pretty chilly in New York when our March wedding rolls around, so a honeymoon in a cooler location just doesn’t sound like that much fun. A warm locale is a must.
  2. Amazing scuba diving: King Hippo and I got certified to dive right before we got engaged, and we loved it! We definitely wanted a honeymoon where we could have an awesome diving experience. This also meant we would be looking for a beach location. Diving during the day then relaxing beachside in the late afternoon? Sign me up.
  3. Not a huge college Spring Break destination: Since our March wedding date is smack in the middle of some schools’ spring break, we definitely didn’t want to have to compete with college craziness. Vacationing families would be OK, but anyplace where MTV could possibly film was off of our list.
  4. Relatively easy to get to from New York: We decided to fly from New York to Dallas for the wedding and then come back to New York before leaving for the honeymoon two days later. That way, we wouldn’t have to worry about packing for both the wedding and honeymoon at the same time and would give us a couple of days post-wedding to relax and regroup. We will be vacationing for 7 days, so we don’t want to spend a ton of time getting to our destination, and extra long flights or multiple transfers were less desirable.

So… what did we choose?

Well, let’s start with where we almost chose.

We had pretty much narrowed it down to Belize, as it is well known as a diving destination and fits our other requirements. We even have friends who honeymooned in Belize and couldn’t say enough great things about it. In fact, we’ve been saying we were going to Belize for our honeymoon for months now. But when we sat down to book it, we realized (or rather, King Hippo realized) that it’s not really our ideal honeymoon spot. As King Hippo said, “A vacation? Absolutely! Our honeymoon? I’m not so sure.”

When we were originally discussing Belize, we were thinking scuba diving, but also touring ruins, hiking and zip lining through the jungle, which sounds so awesome. But then King Hippo reminded me of a few things: (1) I’m not really an outdoorsy person. (2) I’ve been saying I wanted a relaxing honeymoon since the beginning, yet we were discussing all sorts of non-relaxing activities. (3) Mosquitoes. They love me. Belize is a jungle. Enough said.

We expanded our search a little bit and decided on another location that meets all of our requirements while being a little less Indiana Jones and a little more luxurious. We are both super excited and can’t wait! I promise I’ll reveal our vacation location next with tons of pictures of the amazing resort we’ve booked. It is awesome. Stay tuned!

Did you change your ideas about your perfect honeymoon during the planning process?

I actually am choosing to be completely surprised. My fiance will simply tell me what to pack and when we’re going and I will figure it out when we get to the airport. I love surprises and realize this is probably not everyone’s ideal. :-)

Belize sounds amazing!!!

We’re having a hard time deciding. Plus my aunt is gifting us with her timeshare and it’s just been a hassle trying to get the date right. I don’t want to be rude by telling her to forget it, but I don’t want to compromise my honeymoon either. :(

Costa Rica! Is that where you are going? The thought of it just makes me tingle all over. Going somewhere warm while we poor New Yorkers shiver here. I don’t know where I’m going for my HM yet :(

Belize is amazing!!! If you don’t go for your honeymoon, you’ve got to make it there at some point!

Bora Bora? Fiji? We’re divers too and we’ve been looking into these places. Huts over the water- count me in! I’m excited to find out where you’re going.

Belize was under consideration until we realized it’s too geographically close to the resort we stayed at for our Mexico ‘08 vacation… which we’re revisiting for a friend’s wedding in May. Neither of us scuba and I don’t like deep water so we’d miss out on some of the best Belize has to offer.

Can’t wait to see where you’re headed!

@dddd89: Oh wow… a gifted timeshare. That’s awesome! But I totally understand not wanting to compromise. Good luck with figuring it all out!

@bRooklynRocks: Not Costa Rica… although I would love to go there at some point!

My guess is the Cayman Islands! Probably totally wrong, but when I reread your criteria that was my first thought if not Belize. :o)

We too wanted the relaxed but with some tours and site seeing. We originally looked at all inclusive resorts, but to really get a good deal, we’d have to wait a bit to book. That didn’t go well with me as I like everything done EARLY, and so the Mr. told me let’s move on to the next choice…..lol. Due to all the new regulations of passports, etc, we decided on a cruise. We’ve cruised before and realized that you can make it as action packed or relaxed as you’d like. I’m also in a wheelchair so we needed to find places where I’d be able to get around freely. The pricing was absolutely wonderful and kept us under our budget. We figure it will let us splurge a bit during the honeymoon on land excursions!!

We are just starting to look at honeymoon options and I am totally overwhelmed. We are on a budget but I really want a nice beach and beautiful accomodations. I am also getting married in another state and we were just debating where we want to depart from. Can’t wait to see what you decided!

Curacao! There’s amazing diving there. We went for our honeymoon, and it was fantastic. The people are really nice, and it’s just a great island. (I know you’ve booked already, but if it is Curacao and you need a hotel rec, the place we stayed was absolutely gorgeous.)

Belize is AMAZING. That’s where we went for our honeymoon — and though I hate to admit it, we didn’t do any of the jungle stuff or ruins. We scuba dived once and snorkeled a couple times, and other than that we sat on the beach at our incredible resort and just relaxed.

In any case, if you change your mind (or for the future!), the Turtle Inn in Placencia was an INCREDIBLE honeymoon destination.

(And believe it or not, the mosquitos actually weren’t bad, at least where we were.)
