Up and Away: An Overdue Dance

January 25th, 2011 @ 9:13 am by Mrs. Cloud

We finished up the traditional spotlight wedding dances and as far as our guests were concerned it was time to finish eating, let loose and party! But Mr. Cloud and I had one last little surprise up our sleeves, this time for Mama and Daddy Cloud.

Mama & Daddy Cloud on their wedding day, 30 years before ours! (Personal photo)

November weddings run in our family, including my parents’. They celebrated their thirty year wedding anniversary the same month we said our vows. Growing up I loved looking at their wedding album and hearing stories of the big day. One that has always stuck in my mind was when the band they hired ended up not knowing how to play the first dance song they requested—“Their song,” Unforgettable by Nat King Cole.

Well, what is a wedding sap like myself to do? Why, make them have their first dance thirty years later, of course! I’d had this idea in my head for YEARS, so I was super nervous when it came time to announce what was going on. So I blabbered into the microphone a bit about how grateful we are that they are in our lives and how thankful we are for all that they have done for us and then we had to practically drag them up on the dance floor.

Can you see Nana Cloud over on the left side? She cried through the whole thing and later said she felt like she was standing back at their wedding thirty years ago. She just might be the cutest little old lady alive.

My parents were so cute giggling as they danced under the spotlight. Then they insisted we dance with them for the last few moments of the song and I had another ugly cry moment as I thanked Daddy Cloud again for giving us such a beautiful day.

Wow, that is so amazing that you did that. I also used to look at my parents’ wedding album all the time as a child. I looked at their ‘Order of Service’ (programs) and devoured every.single.thing. Time sure does fly. I’m glad you, your parents and your nana had fun.

I am addicted to wedding blog perusal and often need a hankie. Never more so than your first dance. I need more than a hankie, I need a whole box of tissues. The photo of your parents dancing is just so wonderful and more so..I know how much my son loves nat king Cole AND he is engaged. I forgot to get married so I doubt he will want me in any kind of spot light dancing around like the circus clown.

Any way enough about me, Thank you so very much for the lovely. teary morning. Your wedding was lovely and the photo of your parents on the dance floor is pure fairy tale.

Oh my goodness, this was just the sweetest thing ever - your parents must have been so incredibly touched! I was completely tearing up reading it… and your mom looks gorgeous. That shot of your parents dancing and your Nana looking on - gah! Now I’m crying again.

Thank you for sharing. I’m sure your family will never forget that lovely moment you gave them.

That is so wonderful, beautiful, sweet, and all things along those lines. I got teary eyed reading it and seeing the pictures.

Probably the only real tradition dance we’ll have is the first dance. My dad was never much of a dad and I’m not sure he’ll even be there. I’ve thought about something where my s/o will dance with my mom, and me with his dad…but I don’t know. I’d feel like we’d still need to do a dance for his mom. Plenty of time to figure it out though. :-)
