Mrs. Eggs Benedict's Picture
Mrs. Eggs Benedict, Seattle Age and Occupation: 29, Attorney Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Attorney Engagement Date: December 5, 2009 Wedding Date: February 2011 Venue: IslandWood About Me: I'm a Northwest girl who spends my time goofing around with Mr. Eggs Benedict and our dog, hiking, traveling, drinking wine and planning a wedding that will showcase the best of what the Pacific Northwest has to offer. I also love photography, beating Mr. Eggs Bene at Mario Kart, and watching the most ridiculous natural disaster flicks you can think of (seriously, how can you deny the awesomeness that is The Core or 2012?? That's right, you can't). We are planning our weekend wedding adventure at an environmental educational center, and I can't wait for the fun to begin!
About Mrs. Eggs Benedict

Dear Wedding Vendors:

As we plan our wedding day, we know that we are in need of a [venue], [caterer], [florist], [photographer], [insert other vendor here]. While we’re on a budget and will be doing some things ourselves, I know that we’ll need and want professional help in many areas in order to ensure that I don’t go crazy by the big day. However, there are also some things that I need from you if we’re going to be able to work together.

If you are selling yourself as a professional, you need to have a professional looking website. Even more important than that, however, you need to have a website, period. If you don’t, I’m not going to find you, and if for some reason I have been given your name and you don’t have a website, there’s a very small chance that I’ll want to work with you if I can’t immediately find examples of your work.

Whatever sort of website you have, make sure to proofread it! That also goes for any written correspondence we might have. If I can’t trust you to proof your site or your e-mails, why would I trust you to execute the details of our wedding?

As someone who may be doing research on vendors while at work (on my lunch hour, of course), if you have any music playing when I click to your site, I’m going to close it immediately and never come back.

Please, please, please have your pricing information easily available on your site. You’re busy, I’m busy, and yes, I know you want me to contact you and start a conversation about whether we might want to work together, but give me a ballpark figure at least. I don’t want to fall in love with your work and go back and forth with you just to find out that your least expensive package is twice my total budget.

Don’t make fun of my budget. Just because our wedding won’t qualify as a platinum wedding doesn’t mean our party won’t be fabulous.

Never be late. I will do my best to never be late to an appointment, but I’m the one who’s paying you. What’s your excuse for keeping me waiting?

Finally, listen to what I want and help me make it even better. Don’t run over my ideas and tell me why they’re stupid, but do help me to understand if you really don’t think something will work. And then give me an alternative.

Sincerely,

Miss Eggs Benedict

love it! I hate it when they have no pricing info online. That usually gets them crossed off the list immediately!

Friendly Vendor

To play devil’s advocate a minute– while I as a vendor agree websites are important, and websites should be professional and a great representation from a grammar and other points…I do not feel that it is wise to put full pricing information on your website as a business owner due to proprietary concerns and to protect yourself from your competition. Many vendors also offer a customized experience that prohibits them from placing A,B, or C pricing options– they want you to be able to chose only those services you desire and can afford.

Yes I also hated the whole no-price on the website thing. And unprofessional websites with loud music playing. I didn’t even have the time to excersize to get into bridal shape so you can imagine how mad I got after listening to a 10 minute ’sell’ from a vendor before finally spitting out the price.. that was way over my budget.

I agree 100%. Stylized websites are fun and all but you know what? I’m not looking for an “experience” when I hit a vendors website, I’m looking for information. The music, the overdone flash effects, etc make me annoyed. How about a clear, concise, and proofread site? Thanks for this post!

I agree that a starting at is always helpful; at least we know before going in if we could possibly even afford the person.

Great letter BTW!!! It made me laugh.

It’s SO TRUE. I don’t have time to have a phone conversation and in-person consultation with everyone. If I can’t find a portfolio and a general price range, I’m not calling.

@Friendly Vendor: I completely understand not putting all pricing information on a website, and I understand that vendors want to start a conversation. My point was merely that I needed a ballpark. There were several vendors that I found out after the fact that they were waaaay out of my price range. I would have preferred to not waste my time with them knowing I could never afford them, even if they were able to put together a custom package (which not everyone is willing to do).
