Will You Be My Bridesmaid?

January 25th, 2011 @ 5:20 pm by Mrs. Biscuit

Sometime in August I got the BEST news ever! One of my BMs is getting married next summer as well.  Almost exactly one month before I am. Well, we went out to lunch together at my favorite hippie burrito joint where I shared my first date with Mr. B, and I received a pretty cool envelope.

Yeah, there’s an envelope buried in my poor, overworked and underpaid Longchamp. What was inside the envelope?!

YAY! Excuse the couch upholstered in yellow lab…we have given up trying to get dog hair out of corduroy…it’s impossible. Reallyreallyreally impossible.

It’s funny. I LOVE being a BM—even in the wedding where I had to wear a giant straw hat (oh how I wish I was kidding). But I felt awkward asking my BMs. I guess I felt bad inconveniencing them, making them buy a dress and accessories, be in WV for a full weekend, etc. Plus, my girls are getting some extra work since my MOH isn’t even old enough to drive. (Though she recently got her permit. Good job, Baby Sister!) Here’s how I think all of my conversations went:

Me: So…[insert unsuspecting friend's name here], would you maybe want to be a BM for my wedding?? It’s OK if you don’t, if you’re, ya know, busy or something…and um, if you can’t make it to the rehearsal that’s fine, and you don’t need to do anything extra, um…um…

Friend: Yes! I’d love to!

Me: MUAHAHAHAHAHA…now you’re in for it! (OK, I didn’t reaaaally say that. Or think it. Well, maybe I thought it. But just a little.)

If I hadn’t felt so awkward, I would have liked to give my girls cards like this. It’s such a great idea and a nice keepsake. It looks pretty swanky on our refrigerator, too. Now I get to look at this lovely card every time I want to eat chocolate peanut butter fudge sauce! And that’s about 25 times a day.

I found some more inspiration for anyone who wants to ask their maids in a more formal fashion than an awkward stuttering on the phone. I can live vicariously through you.

Did any of you find creative ways to ask your BMs to share your day? Or at least make coherent sentences when asking them on the phone?

Glad I’m not the only one who feels a little guilty asking my bridesmaid. I still have one left to ask.

I was so nervous to ask mine I ended up buying them all flowers and having them sent to their work. It cost a fortune but got the job done and everyone was so happy to receive the suprise flowers.

I also felt very uncomfortable asking my BMs. Four out of the five were super good friends, but one is my FH’s sister-in-law, someone I hope to have a solid relationship with in the future and I felt really guilty asking her, especially after finding out that she had several other weddings to be in that year. After I asked one friend, she told me of course she wold be in my wedding which was a much better alternative since she thought I was trying to tell her I was preggers. All of this made me realize I was taking away from the fun of it all, so I sat down on etsy and found these things: http://www.etsy.com/transaction/35822613 and http://www.etsy.com/transaction/35765199
On each tag I wrote that my experience would be that much richer if my friend would be a part of my big day. They loved it! and the caramels were delicious.

i actually think my sisters and best friend were getting antsy that i hadn’t asked them yet (and we’d only be engaged a couple of weeks) but the 3 of them were just so excited that they wanted to know right away-little did they know i was busy working on making pretty cards for each of them (and getting my FW to make them for her ladies too!)
http://gallery.weddingbee.com/photo/will-you-be-my-bridesmaid-1 not my most perfect diy project, but i figured i’d save the ocd moments for things like invites!

I felt so guilty asking people to be my bridesmaid that I put off asking two of them for months. So I didn’t come up with anything creative, instead I just meekly asked.

I made cards to look like bridesmaids dresses and in the colors of my daughter’s wedding for her to ask her friends to be her attendants. The cards opened from the bottom of the dress and used jewels and tulle to make them realistic. I even fashioned little hangers out of metal. They were published in the July 2010 Issue of Scrapbook Trends, “Cards”magazine. They can even stand up on their own. Inside we crafted a poem specific to each of the girls. You can see a picture of them here: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=32228725&l=ea298610cc&id=1230741205

I felt guilty not asking my MOH sooner because I knew she was getting antsy about it. She kept trying to be helpful then was worried she was stepping on my toes. I made her a card with a dress on in (purple for her favorite color) and I think I’ll do the same for the other girls. I’m not nervous about asking my two friends but I am super nervous about asking my FI’s sisters.
