Bridal Beauty

January 26th, 2011 @ 4:35 pm by Mrs. Biscuit

In light of E!’s new reality show, Bridalplasty, I want to talk a little bit about bridal beauty. You always hear about brides wanting to lose weight for their wedding or have their makeup professionally done as they are embarking on the day of 1000 photographs. I can understand wanting to look your best, but if you don’t look like yourself, what’s the point? I’m not immune to this pressure to look perfect and have made a few tweaks to myself, non-surgically of course, to look a little better for the big day.

First: hair. In October, I made a big change. I went from having blonde-ish hair to going back to brown and getting some bangs, a la Zooey Deschanel. I was worried I wouldn’t like it, but relieved I’d have time to change it for the big day; however, I think it turned out pretty cute. Cute being the operative word here, as my mother now thinks I look even younger. Hahaha.

Second: Fitness. While I know I’m not overweight by any means, finding out that my waist was two sizes larger than my bust or my hips hurt. Like whoa. I already work out, but I’ve decided I need to expand my horizons from just running. I’ve made a New Year’s resolution to take one exercise class a week and actually lift some weights. I really don’t want to lose any weight; I’d just like to tone up what I have and bring my fitness up to the next level. I haven’t actually implemented this new routine yet, but I will. Seriously. Now that I’ve said it on the Internet I have to, right? I’ll post more on my plan if when it actually comes to fruition.

Third: My teeth. I was one of those really weird kids who always wanted braces. All the cool kids had them. You could pick colors for them. Why would my cruel endodontist father deprive me of this opportunity?! Well, my teeth were straight. Sigh. Fast forward to me at 17. My wisdom teeth were stuck in my jaw at an angle pushing my beautiful straight teeth. Yup, they weren’t so straight anymore, but I wasn’t going to get braces my senior year of high school. That’s crazy talk.

I had thought about braces for about a year before I took the plunge. Being in the dental field, I felt a bit judged for having my slightly crooked teeth (even though I still don’t think they looked that bad). Once I got engaged I figured, “If not now, when?” I didn’t want braces once I embarked on my professional life—I already look young enough!

I feel a bit vain for getting the braces, but I think it was the right choice. I will have more self confidence in my career, and won’t be starring at my snaggle-tooth in all of my wedding pictures. My face has also changed shape because my deep bite was corrected. This means my face isn’t as short and round anymore. Yay!

What lengths have you all gone to in order to achieve perfect bridal beauty? Do you think changing yourself before your day by either surgical or non-surgical means is vain or perfectly acceptable?

Toning up is on my to do list as well, I run too but would like some more definition. Although don’t go by what your wedding dress sizes imply…my waist was a 4, chest a 0 and hips a 2…and I am very proportionate.

I got braces too! but I got lingual braces that are hidden behind my teeth so no one can see Hee hee hee. but i feel totally guilty sometimes that i have what would be about 1/5 of our wedding in my teeth.

My fiance laughs that he won’t recognize me and I need to make sure no one else has a white dress on. I plan on getting extensions.

check out bracesreview.com there are some other brides with braces.

I really think you have nothing to be ashamed about. Getting braces, especially when your in the dental field, is the right choice for you. And that’s all that matters.

@Mrs. Rainbow: I was originally going to do Invisalign (well, clear retainers…Invisalign doesn’t always have the best track record), but my orthodontist said he’d have to shave my teeth more than usual. The metal ones aren’t too bad, I get to have my cool colored rubber bands like I wanted. But I’m ready to get them off!

I also made improvements to my teeth! I got veneers on four of my teeth to correct an enamel discoloration problem that I had covered with bonding several years back.

I did the same thing! Except I went with Invisalign. Reeeally uncomfortable and a PITA the first week or so, but I’m already used to it 3 weeks in. About 9 more months and then I’ll be good to go!

Braces aren’t vain. Having straight teeth is important for future teeth health. My dad’s teeth are crooked with an overbite and he now has worn away the back gum of his top teeth! That’s not growing back.

I had the same problem and thus had braces for 1.5 years when I was 14-15ish. I LOVED my braces. I still have them in a little packet. I loved changing the colours for holidays and special events.

Getting wisdom teeth out so that they don’t ruin what braces did is very important.

Please don’t take this the wrong way. But you are so gosh darn cute! Anytime I see a picture of you smiling, it makes me want to smile and I don’t even know you :) Anyhow, I’m sure you are going to be an absolute knockout on your day.

I agree with bRooklynRocks that you are the cutest thing ever!!! I was also always one of the people that wanted braces when I was growing up because all of the cool, popular, rich, and pretty people had them. However, I didn’t have any luck in that area. I was blessed with straight teeth, which really was a blessing, because I never would have been able to afford braces.

Way to go, those all great things (and things to be proud of)! :)

I’m trying to tone up as well. I’ve always been petite so I’ve never worked out consistently until now and I’m loving that I’m building a good habit for my future. Other than that I’m trying to get more regular haircuts so my hair is healthier when the big day rolls around!

I joined a gym in order to lose weight (can’t say I’ve been very successful at that however), and I also plan on getting lasik this Spring/Summer. I always wear glasses because contacts tend to really irritate my eyes. I may also consult a dermatologist to see about having some scarring treated from past acne. I would love to get braces (again) but we can’t afford it. I had braces for 2 years when I was a young-in but refused to wear my retainers after they were removed. Needless to say, they moved back to where they started.

@bRooklynRocks: haha thanks! I definitely don’t think that’s a bad thing. I think it’s a major compliment. I’d rather be cute and make people happy than the opposite. Though someday it would be cool to look 21 years old.

The things girls do for a wedding haha. I gained a lot of weight over the years Mr. S and I were dating, so I splurged on a personal trainer before the wedding. It was my biggest splurge and I did feel vain spending that kind of money, but it was so worth it!
