In light of E!’s new reality show, Bridalplasty, I want to talk a little bit about bridal beauty. You always hear about brides wanting to lose weight for their wedding or have their makeup professionally done as they are embarking on the day of 1000 photographs. I can understand wanting to look your best, but if you don’t look like yourself, what’s the point? I’m not immune to this pressure to look perfect and have made a few tweaks to myself, non-surgically of course, to look a little better for the big day.

First: hair. In October, I made a big change. I went from having blonde-ish hair to going back to brown and getting some bangs, a la Zooey Deschanel. I was worried I wouldn’t like it, but relieved I’d have time to change it for the big day; however, I think it turned out pretty cute. Cute being the operative word here, as my mother now thinks I look even younger. Hahaha.

Second: Fitness. While I know I’m not overweight by any means, finding out that my waist was two sizes larger than my bust or my hips hurt. Like whoa. I already work out, but I’ve decided I need to expand my horizons from just running. I’ve made a New Year’s resolution to take one exercise class a week and actually lift some weights. I really don’t want to lose any weight; I’d just like to tone up what I have and bring my fitness up to the next level. I haven’t actually implemented this new routine yet, but I will. Seriously. Now that I’ve said it on the Internet I have to, right? I’ll post more on my plan if when it actually comes to fruition.

Third: My teeth. I was one of those really weird kids who always wanted braces. All the cool kids had them. You could pick colors for them. Why would my cruel endodontist father deprive me of this opportunity?! Well, my teeth were straight. Sigh. Fast forward to me at 17. My wisdom teeth were stuck in my jaw at an angle pushing my beautiful straight teeth. Yup, they weren’t so straight anymore, but I wasn’t going to get braces my senior year of high school. That’s crazy talk.
I had thought about braces for about a year before I took the plunge. Being in the dental field, I felt a bit judged for having my slightly crooked teeth (even though I still don’t think they looked that bad). Once I got engaged I figured, “If not now, when?” I didn’t want braces once I embarked on my professional life—I already look young enough!
I feel a bit vain for getting the braces, but I think it was the right choice. I will have more self confidence in my career, and won’t be starring at my snaggle-tooth in all of my wedding pictures. My face has also changed shape because my deep bite was corrected. This means my face isn’t as short and round anymore. Yay!
What lengths have you all gone to in order to achieve perfect bridal beauty? Do you think changing yourself before your day by either surgical or non-surgical means is vain or perfectly acceptable?
