Not THAT Kind of Cupcake Tree

January 26th, 2011 @ 11:13 am by Ms. Sloth

When I first heard the term “cupcake tree,” I pictured a magical tree from which yummy cupcakes fell like apples.

Alas, this kind of cupcake tree exists only in my wildest fantasies, at least until some botanical genius can develop cupcake seeds.

Anyway, the cupcake tree I’m referring to is this kind of cupcake tree:

It’s a big cardboard structure on which to place cupcakes. And I bought one. We could’ve made our own beautiful behemoth like Mrs. Cola, or a smaller DIY tower like Mrs. Stripes, but Sloths = lazy. So the structure was purchased.

But I still need to decorate the thing. And now I’m starting to have second thoughts.

See, I ordered it from Save-On-Crafts and they have some good photos of decorated towers on the product page:

All of these towers are lovely and none of the DIYs look too hard. I could probably knock one of these out in one afternoon.

But I’m not sure if they’ll fit the feel of our vintage-yet-bright wedding. They seem too modern.

So, how do I make this cardboard look more antique-vintage-rustic? I was thinking of doing something with moss, but I don’t want errant bits of moss getting stuck in the cupcake frosting. Do I cover it in doilies? Fresh flowers?

I beg of you, hive - help! I’d love any suggestions you could provide!

Ooh! Cute stands! You could totally cover it in yellowed book pages. Or maybe floral fabric.

What about a fabric like the one Miss Prairie Dog has incorporated in her wedding? Or old newspaper or comics? Wrap all the borders with lace trim? You don’t need to do anything too extravagant - you want the focus on the cupcakes, not the stand!

Old advertising from magazines was the first thing to come to my mind, but I also like the idea of covering it with old feed sack fabric.

First I’d cover it with a paper that would kill the stark white, maybe a ivory or soft pastel to blend with your colors and then a thin ivory lace. I’d do the edge in either a very vintage floral type ribbon to match the paper used to cover the card board or a nice roughed lace to match the one used to cover the paper. You could use dollies but the lace would give same effect with less work.

I’s also have some flowers on each level between cupcakes that creates a design when you look at it as a whole. I tried to insert some pictures but don’t know how to do it on blog :-(

LOVE the pic of the cupcake tree. Has anyone written a book with that title cause that pic would be perfect!

Lace, ribbons, and Toille make me think vintage. Perhaps you could find wrapping paper with a vintage pattern and colors for your wedding.

Can’t wait to see how it looks!!!

I made my own out of basic square canvases, small brass vases, one large brass candle holder for the base, and a decorative cabinet knob. It looks very cute, kind of kitschy, and I love it! It is only 3 tiers, but I’m sure you could go higher. All you need is a threaded rod through the middle to hold it all together!

I think the map one looks vintagey.

If you wanted to do moss, maybe just do the very top tier? Maybe wrap a wide ribbon, or even better, cardstock with a ribbon glued on around the top tier, so it contains the moss.

do you have any of your patterned overlay fabric leftover from the tables? i’d use that to cover up the rounds, and just edge it with coordinating ribbon.

Lace and maybe some pearls around the edges… just a thought.

Vintage = lace, wrap a thin strip of lace around the edges to hide the cardboard look. Bright = BRIGHT! cover the faces with a color that will tie into your wedding colors. I agree with another comment made as well: maybe incorporate some wildflowers in between the cupcakes. That would tie in to your venue!

XD love your first thought of a cupcake tree!

Instead of using fabric like some of the other bees suggested, a very pretty wrapping paper will do just as well with less cost! Then put some Mod Podge or some other sealant on the whole thing so the paper won’t show any grease stains from the cakes!

Hope this helps!

I think doing something like the map stand (last picture) would definitely make it look vintage. Use old paper or fabric that coordinates and it would look spectacular!

I actually think that map one would fit your wedding feel. It’s gorgeous and has an antique look.

I am now dreaming of a cupcake tree … the first kind where cupcakes magically grow on trees. Inventing said tree now.

you could find a reproduction of a vintage wallpaper (they have those in scrapbooking places online) or vintage fabric and fabric reproductions (also online!). Both of those would tie into your vintage-yet-bright wedding….
