Mrs. Brooch's Picture
Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Couture Invitations and a Meltdown

January 26th, 2011 @ 3:54 pm by Mrs. Brooch

If you haven’t noticed, this week has been all about invitations!  I felt compelled to share the back story of how we decided upon the set that we did. It was a journey that started with DIY e-party invites and a roller coaster ride through the world of choices, including couture invites, a major meltdown, which you’ll read about here, and an attempt at Adobe Illustrator!

Obviously, this hasn’t been an easy process for us, and since I know a lot of you are going through the same thing (trying to decide on what kind of invitations to have).

When it came time for us to chose something, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy.

I stressed out a lot about the e-party invitations and there were only about 25 of those! I sent out a pack of ten, ran back to the supply store, and then sent another ten. Some people didn’t even get one and just got an email because I was over the whole process.

Mr. B didn’t want me to go through that again, and I didn’t want to go there again, either.

I had resolved myself to just buying some, but even still, I faced challenges. One Saturday morning after breakfast we decided to take a trip to Dandelion Patch, a stationery store here in Northern VA. Mr. B said, “Let’s go look in person and forget all the Internet searches.” We went on whim, hopeful we were going to find “the ones”!

I want to fast forward to the car ride home, because I was bawling.

Yes, I cried. Like really, really cried. I know it sounds awful, because I should have enjoyed invitation shopping, but I didn’t. I got overwhelmed. The binders upon binders and millions of customizable options really sent me for a loop. I buckled and pretty much shut down.

There were just way too many options and the prices were ridiculous. We should have gone in more prepared. We should have been more vocal about our limited budget. Instead, we ended up walking out with quotes on about four different invitation suites that were either not exactly what we were looking for or way out of our price range. (I’m talking way out.)  It didn’t help that the couple next to us was placing their order.

Our favorites? We both loved Elum letterpress invitations. They would be perfect for our venue, gorgeous, timeless, and couture. Yeah, couture…in other words, not in the budget! Still, very beautiful though:

So back to our car ride home…I felt like a crazy person. Good or bad, I had decided I was going to do the OPPOSITE of what I had been planning—I was going to make our invitations! Screw paying someone $1,000! Screw those binders! I know what I want and I’m going to make them myself.

The lowest estimate we got at Dandelion Patch was for $900.00 and I couldn’t help but think we could have beautiful invitations for way less! The bees did it, right?

When I wiped away the tears, I felt a rush of excitement. Meanwhile, Mr. B looked frightened. Like a good fiance, he accepted that I was going to be making our invitations. He nodded his head and said, “Sure. You’re going to do a great job, honey.”

I got home and guess what I did? I downloaded a free trial of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Design! I probably jumped the gun a little and downloaded it too early (they only offer 30 free days of using the program), but what can I say? I was anxious to get this show on the road.

Up next: My Attempt at Illustrating!

Did you get frustrated or overwhelmed by all of the different types of invitations out there?

Haha this is perfect timing, cause we just got our proof for our invites in my inbox! And yes, you can have beautiful invitations for much less than $1,000. Can’t wait to hear the next part!

OH my goodness! I know exactly what you are going through! I am completly overwhelmed by the whole invitation process! :/ I created an invitiation from scratch, without a program & LOVE it! One ofd my bridesmaids is going to take it to a print shop & have it duplicated. :) I’m just a little anxious because now it’s out of my hands…

I am so worried that I will spend as much creating them as I would if I ordered them.

For a fellow Arlington bride to be… I designed our invites and actually just got them from our letterpress printers. If you need help, I am a graphic designer, have all of these programs and would be willing to help you out. I know exactly what you’re going thru.

Good luck!

Yes. I ended up designing my own in Photoshop because I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted out in cyberspace and the sheer number of invitations to wade through was completely overwhelming.

I felt the same way. Figuring out invitations was definitely the most overwhelming part of wedding planning for me! I looked online and didn’t see anything just right, and hated the few samples I ordered. I went to a few stores and flipped through insanely huge binders and nearly had a heart attack! The ladies in the stores were super unhelpful too. I just didn’t get it - didn’t get how it worked and what could be customized and what couldn’t. Fortunately I had dinner with a friend shortly after that and she recommended her friend who started her own business (she’s on Etsy!). Working with her was great - she calmed me down and created a perfec suite just for me. I loved supporting a local small business woman!

Before you jump the gun because I understand just how frustrating DIYing can be. Have you thought of a semi DIY.

There are freebie inviations on http://www.downloadandprint.com - there is one on there that is very similar to one of your designs.

http://www.nonpareilmag.com/ - head to the download section. There are some very pretty ones there also.

and check out http://www.weddingchicks.com I think you could find some there!

But im sure whatever you do on photoshop will look fab!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Adobe Illustrator!! If you need any graphics, there are literally thousands of pre-illustrated vector images (flowers, butterflies, flourishes and more) available online. My fave stock illustration site is istock.com. For less than $20 you can get your hands on your very own scalable vector illustration - and go to town with it. (Put it on invites, place cards, thank-yous… everything.) Check it out!

Another site, dafont.com, will grant you access to a pretty decent selection of wedding-y script fonts (some are cheesy, but there are a few jewels too.) And if the Adobe thing doesn’t work out, you can make your own invites via vistaprint.com (I had pretty good results with my STD magnets through them - pricing is fairly competitive too.)

I have so much faith in your ability to craft your picture-perfect invite without spending that ridiculous amount of money. They’re going to turn out so great, and I can’t wait to see how you tackle the project :)

And don’t you worry one bit about all the bawling… remember, I cry ALL the time. It’s no biggie :)

I saw how much they were when planning my sister’s wedding, I knew from that point that it would be a diy project. Invite prices are crazy!

Ooo! Try http://www.weddingclipart.com/images-templates/butterfly.html
They have invitation templates with butterflies. You have to buy a membership; but it’s not expensive ($39.95/yr). It might be worth a look. :)
