Mrs. French Toast's Picture
Mrs. French Toast, Pleasanton, CA Age and Occupation: 29, Marketing & PR Fiance's Age and Occupation: IT geek by day, self-proclaimed handyman by night Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Palm Event Center About Me: I’m a city girl at heart who moved to the suburbs a year ago. Now I’m adjusting to life with a front lawn, nosy neighbors, cooking attempts, and making sure the garbage pail is pulled out on time every week! When I’m not traveling, Mr. FT and I enjoy marathon sessions of Law & Order: SVU, snowboarding, photography, spoiling our 3-year old yorkie-poodle Mokka and disagreeing over what music to listen to in the car. We’re planning a small winery wedding while incorporating some cultural elements into the day as a nod to our Chinese backgrounds.
About Mrs. French Toast

Well…er… not really. But Mr. French Toast and I do have completely different tastes in music. He likes your head-banging, screamin’-at-the-top-of-your-lungs rock and alternative music. Me? I have no shame in listening to Justin Bieber or belting out Celine Dion at karaoke, with the occasional Chinese pop thrown in.

I Could Have Danced All Night to the Thong Song : wedding music pleasanton N77520001

How could Mr. French Toast not understand my admiration for Andy Lau, who is quite possibly one of the biggest stars in Asia?

The first thing we do when we get in the car is decide who gets to dictate what music is playing in the car. Usually the driver gets the final say, but with Mr. French Toast behind the wheel most of the time, my strategy is to make him concentrate on the road while I slyly switch over to my songs.

So for this couple who couldn’t disagree more on music, how in the world were we going to agree on a playlist for the wedding, let alone a first dance song?

When we met with our DJ and he asked us what kind of music we hoped to have at the wedding, we started throwing out music from completely different ends of the spectrum. I gotta give props to our DJ for not bolting out the door! We finally agreed that Mr. FT and I would start jotting down songs that we like so it would give the DJ a good variety to mix from for the wedding. But we still have one dark cloud looming over our heads - the first dance song.

Who knows? Maybe we’d end up dancing to the Thong Song mash-up with I Could Have Danced All Night, just like in Glee:

How did you and your SO find your first dance song?

I have sucked Mr. G into my world of guilty pleasure songs, but some of the music he listens to I really don’t get. We compromised by playing classics :)

P.S. That scene in Glee gave me second hand embarrassment. Mr. Shue really makes me cringe sometimes..

I made a playlist on our iTunes of potential first dance songs for Mr. Tartlet to screen! Our process was easier because he doesn’t have a strong opinion on music and was happy to be relieved of that responsibility. ;)

@Mrs. Glasses: I’m with you on that one; I remember covering my face with a pillow when I watched that segment of Glee!

OMG! You are so lucky to meet Andy Lau up close and personal! That is soooo coool! :)

Well, a good mix of songs is going to make both you AND your groom up and hopping.

No matter what, it’s going to be a fun night for the two of you!

OMG ANDY LAU!

I’d love to have a Wang Leehom song as our first dance, but my mom is totally against it! I guess if we can’t find an English song that we like better, we’ll just go with it! your DJ experience sounds exactly like how ours is going to be..!

@mrspaetz & @anita - I don’t know Andy personally but I had a work-related dinner with him. He was super nice and down to earth when I asked him to do a silly face photo with me. I sleep with the photo by my bedside (just kidding).

Awesome silly face photo! Our first song was easy to pick as it’s kind of “our” song. It’s the song that was playing when we first admitted we were in love with each other :)

We listened and searched and googled for what felt like forever. Then I was listening to my new Lady A CD in the car and was about to skip to a more upbeat song when I heard it. I started crying (which I’m def not a crier so ya…). I called him and told him to search it, he loved it and that was that!!

Err…I might have said “This is our first dance song even if you don’t like it.” The song is so beautiful that it makes me cry. I’m not talking about misting up or a tear, oh no, sometimes I listen to it and can be found sobbing in my cubicle at work. It’s by a group called Tonic Sol Fa who have the most amazing voices ever. Now I just need to find room in the budget to have them sing it to us live at the wedding. ;-)

We have totally different taste in music, I’m more pop, he likes more alternative. He told me to pick whatever because he wanted the crowd to be happy. Although he did request some Bruce Springstein.

p.s. I love the Glee reference! :)

Love the Glee reference. :-)

As for us…I’ve basically told him what our first dance is going to be to and he’s cool with it. (Frank Sinatra, Love Is Here To Stay) He’s doesn’t dance, but he can dance to that kind of music, and the first time we ever danced was to Frank Sinatra….so there was meaning behind my choice. :-)
