What’s My Name?

January 26th, 2011 @ 1:47 pm by Mrs. Dolphin

Oh na na. What’s my name?

Oh na na. What’s my name?

What's My Name? : wedding gainesville legal Whats My Name whats-my-name-

Having an identity crisis in Maui

Unflattering camera angle by Mr. Dolphin. Thanks hubs!

Today I was driving to work and heard Rihanna’s song, What’s My Name?, and it got me thinking about the whole name change game newly married women must endure (if they choose to take their husband’s last name). On a side note, I totally believe all newly minted husbands should have to change their names too, so they have to go through the struggles at the DMV (located in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE in Gainesville) and the Social Security office. I still don’t think Mr. Dolphin quite understands my plight.

Anyways…

When Mr. Dolphin and I were married 8 months ago, I became a Knight, but I didn’t completely drop my maiden name, Gator. I’m using our alma maters’ mascots, Knight and Gator, to explain our name change situation.

I wasn’t always a Gator. I became a Gator on my 11th birthday. I will never forget that day (mostly because I was really sick). The local judge who ‘officially’ changed my name even had the same first name as I do!

I was so excited to became a Gator that I used to practice writing my new name the whole year leading up to the name change. My 5th grade teacher was pretty cool with me signing my homework with my new last name. She’s awesome. Clearly.

For me, Gator is who I am. In college, my professors often called me by my last name. So, you can imagine I’ve been going through quite the identity crisis these past few months with the new last name of Knight.

I feel like I waited so long to become a Gator (and was so proud to finally be one), that I couldn’t just drop the name completely when I married Mr. D. Instead, I chose to drop my middle name and replace it with my maiden name. Doing this makes it easy for past employers, colleagues, and friends to still find me via Facebook, LinkedIn, etc., and I still get to hold on to the Gator name that means so much to me.

That’s not to say that I don’t love being a Knight. I love that we have a family name and I can now order a wreath hanger with our last name on it (I know, lame…but I’ve always wanted one of those!), among many other reasons. I love it when Mr. D follows me around the house calling me his Mrs. He’s too funny.

What I don’t love…completely? Learning how to write my new name. I often catch myself ending e-mails with my old last name, and signing my maiden name when I sign receipts. Even introducing myself, it is hard to say Knight, since I’ve said Gator for so many years. Others have had difficulty adjusting to my new name.

So, even almost nine months later after the name change, I’m still having some difficulty accepting of my new name. I now prefer to be called by my full name (middle name and all), which confuses people like crazy when they introduce me to someone, and my super long e-mail address makes Mr. D crazy, too. But, I’m cool with it. I think 10 years down the road it will be weird to have never not been Mrs. Knight (double negative… yeah, I didn’t learn anything in English class).

If you decided to change your last name, did you have a bit of an identity crisis during the transition? Did you choose to keep a remnant of your maiden name? If you didn’t change your last name, did you still run into problems?

I love the flow of my name, and took a long time deciding what I will be doing with my name. I don’t go by my first name, a family name, but rather my middle name. When deciding what to do without having four names, I decided that my last name is more important to me as a family moniker than my first. So I will also make my maiden name my middle name, and drop my first name. I will miss my first name, because it’s always been a part of me, but less so than my maiden name has. And hopefully, when we have children, I can work that name back into the family. I wonder about it all the time, and still have a while before I have to make it official, but right now, it seems right.

I’m finishing up the last of the legal name change process - which is the PITA in NY State! Ugh!
It’s def hard signing my name. It’s way more of a nondescript signature than my last name.

Don’t forget to contact NCARB to change your name as well!

I’m in Gainesville (at UF) too! :) Apparantly the DMV here is awful… my friend just had to go yesterday and they were super rude to her. Hope you get used to writing your new name soon, I’m sure by next year it will be super easy for you!

@Mrs. Dolphin:
hahha. I was surprised and shocked that they did not charge me to change my name on the record! And it changes IDP as well. Anyhoo, I have the email to contact, you just have to send a PDF of your paperwork. PM me if you want the email.
Literally just came back from the bank during my lunch to change my name in our checking, savings, mortgage, debit card, etc. Geez didn’t realize we had 8 diff acct types with them!

haha - the writing thing is what gets me! I still have lots of time but I have been “practicing” (how lame is that? I know!) because his name is a LOT harder to write than mine, which is short and flows easily. His is looong and has lots of “tall” letters, including a lowercase “b” which I totally can’t write in cursive! I’m hoping that by practicing now it will feel more natural then…lol

I’ve LOVED changing my name! Nothing wrong with my maiden name (actually pretty rare - never met another) but still LOVE my new name. Pretty rare as well. Changing it was a pain yes, but it’s done as well as all my/our accounts so it’s done for life!

question: what happened at age 11?

@Rgeddy: We officially changed my last name to our family name (Gator). My Mom remarried when I was super little, and her new husband (my Dad) basically raised me since I was 4/5 years old. So we were finally making it official, since I still had my Mom’s 1st husband’s last name. I was so excited to become a Gator, I was always super insecure not having our family name. Now, I can’t believe my last name wasn’t Gator from the beginning. So weirdddd.

Mr. D said that after I changed my last name when I was 11, he had trouble finding me in middle school. He thought I had moved!

@Mrs. Dolphin: Ah I get it. My BIL is like that but never changed it so he doesn’t share our family name.

I legally changed my last name (dropping my dad’s name and taking my mom’s maiden name) my last semester in college, so my last name is super important to me - because I chose it! My husband didn’t want to take my last name, so we both hypenated. Boy, was it completely NOT fun to get the DMV to let a man take a hypenated name.

Amen sister! I struggle with this constantly especially at work or when I’m at the dry cleaners and they ask for my last name, and I present them with my maiden name - oops! I’m slowly weening off of it though. Baby steps, baby steps.

I am so happy to hear of others struggling with this. I was so happy to be engaged and jumped into wedding planning that I never thought I might be losing my last name. My last name means so much to me because it’s all I have left after my father died 10 years ago this May. I LOVE the idea of making my maiden name my middle name. It’s a great idea and makes the process easier for me. I am so excited to be Mrs. ET :)

While i am not looking forward to the struggle of all the legal/ paper work aspect of changing my name, i am so so ready for the change! My first middle and last name are all EXTREMLY common (no seriously there are like 7 of “me” at the same college) that i am so excited with my new name!

However, as simple and plain and boring as my last name is i could never imagine something else sounding “right” With all my other boyfriends when i would do silly daydreams and imagine if i were to marry them i always got caught up on the fact my name didnt sound right with theirs. I think its a good sign that i am in love with what my new name will be in 8 months! :)

Thanks for writing this! I completely dropped my maiden and took my husband’s (of 6 months! Eek, I like WB too much), and it’s harder than I would have thought to constantly remember my new name. I’m usually OK with forms and straight “what’s your name?” questions, but introductions? I’m always freaked I’ll say the wrong thing! I don’t regret it one bit, but I didn’t know it’d be this hard.

Oh girl, I drove all the way out to BFE by the highway patrol station to that stupid Gainesville DMV to change my name two weeks ago. I made an appointment and when I got there, the guy at the from desk tried to tell me that I had *obviously* lost a second piece of paper that the social security office had given me. I informed him that I *obviously* did not get such paper and that he would *obviously* be letting me back to get my new license since it had been more than 48 hours since going to the SS office. It was not a pleasant experience but hey, I got my new license that day =)

When I took off work and drove all the way out to BFN Gainesville to change my name, the DMV was having computer issues and couldn’t keep any appointments without them. Cue 50 angry people in the waiting room being rescheduled… Sigh. That place is never pleasant.

Arggh!! In a word, that is how I feel about changing my name. I really don’t know what to do! I’m like you, my last name is part of who I am, why would i want to give that up? I’m thinking about having two middle names, my first middle name and then my last name as my second middle name. But then that gets so long!!!

I’m thinking about changing my middle name to my maiden. Or adding it as a second middle name. I’d really like to keep a piece of it somewhere.
