Bridesmaid Budgets: Outfits & Gifts

January 27th, 2011 @ 11:39 am by Mrs. Jaguar

If there’s one thing I love doing, it’s shopping for other people. I’m that girl who has all of her birthdays planned out in advance, who has her Christmas gifts over and done with by October…it’s just how I roll. So when it came to finding the perfect gifts for my girls, I was really looking forward to searching for that special something for them.

Before I get into that though, I thought I would share how I’ve worked out money & ‘necessities’ for my bridesmaids—and how we worked out who is paying for what.

First off: their outfits. I was fairly honest about what they would be paying for when I asked them initially—and I verified many, many times to make sure they were okay with purchasing their own dresses. All three of them were just fine with that. I had a budget in mind that I didn’t want to go over, and they agreed: however the ultimate dress decision was completely up to them. It’s great that we found something that all three liked nice and early.

They’ve already paid those off too, so all that needs doing is picking them up in a few months time and handing them over to each girl, and to arrange for any alterations they need. As for shoes, they have my blessing to wear whatever they want—the gowns are floor-length, so there’s no point spending extra $$ on matching shoes!

As for everything else—well, if I want it specifically, I’ll pay for it. Hair and makeup will be my treat to them, which is a going to take up a hefty chunk of our overall wedding budget. But that being said, I want them to feel as pampered as I will on the morning of the wedding, so it’s a price I’m happy to cover.

Now…before I tell you anything else, it’s time for m’ladies to make themselves scarce. Girls, if you’re out there, no more sneaky reading on, or else you’ll make baby jaguars cry. And you wouldn’t want that, would you?

Okay – so on to the fun stuff: the gifts!

I liked the idea of giving my bridesmaids jewellery—something they could wear on the wedding day but also hopefully take away and wear again in the future. So, jewellery I found! Unfortunately I can’t show you them yet, since I’m still waiting on a few pieces to arrive, but I can promise you that they’re pretty, simple and classic. I’ll share them with you as soon as they get here, promise.

But the other part of their gift is something I can share with you, since I snapped them up today. I’d been looking out for them over the past few months, and I’m so excited to finally have them ordered and ready to go: ROBES!

The girls will each receive their own colour: the shades are pastel blue, yellow & pink. I even splurged on one for myself—a nice white colour for the bride, of course! The idea is for them to be snug and cozy as we get ready, get primped, and pose for photographs, of course. And, something that makes this good little budgeter very, very happy: the gifts were on sale at half their usual cost—bonus.

Aren’t they adorable? We’re not having many cutesy colours in the grand scheme of the day, so this should hopefully be a cute little POP that will make the ‘getting ready’ pictures even more fun. My MOH knows about the robes (she called dibs on the blue!) but doesn’t know about the jewellery gifts yet, so I’m keeping the element of surprise going until the rehearsal dinner. I’m almost as excited about the robes as I am about the actual bridesmaid dresses…crazy, right?

What did you end up purchasing for gifts for your girls?

3 out of 4 of my bridesmaids have to travel to my wedding. So they are already incurring the cost of flight + hotel and I didn’t want them to have to pay for anything else so I am buying their dresses, shoes and hair and makeup. (The total amount spent is going to be quite a lot!!) Should I also buy them gifts?

Those robes are super and I agree with the MOH and I too would have called dibs on the blue one lol. I’m making mt girls jewelry and bags filled with little items for the day including ballet flats for when they get tired of their shoes.

I am having jewelry made for them, of course to go with the beach theme of the wedding, and something they can wear again!
I also purchased super cute monogram “stickers” with rhinestones (actually from another Bee who makes them!), that will be put on wine glasses, since we all indulge and love our wine :)
I really like the robe idea…I might have to look into some!

Love this post! :)

@totheislnds - I too am an overgifter who gets it from her mother ;)

@Jag- Love your gift ideas! :) Nice!

I ended up buying 1 of my BM’s dresses and plan to have necklaces/earrings specially made. Then I hope to be able to assist in pampering them some if I can the day of or soon beforehand, with mani-pedis. :) I had a long list of other things I want to do too - like PJs and/or robes, makeup bags, perhaps g.c. to VS or Sephora for makeup or similar, another necklace idea, etc.

Though I can’t afford ALL of that just for the wedding, so I’m picking and choosing a couple things and then keeping those other ideas for other occasions, like birthdays, etc. ;)

Hopefully that helps from me going too overboard. ;)

Good luck with the gifting..;)

@Ms. TMG: I got them online, from a store called Bras & Things. You can find them here (still for $20!) - http://www.brasnthings.com/store/sleepwear/robes–slippers/charlize-short-sleeve-cosy-gown.html

@Sarah: It seems like you’re paying a lot for them, which is really sweet. Maybe you could go a more hand-made gift, or stick to a smaller budget, just so you don’t go overboard!

They are REALLY warm robes, guys. (Which is good because June in Australia is the beginning of winter.) I already wore my white one around when they arrived, and they’re soft & fluffy. I hope they love them as much as I do!

i’m still in the midst of planning what i’m getting my bm’s. i like the idea of bathrobes since they will be nice to get ready it (and not have to worry about messing up hair/makeup) and they are oh-so-cute!

i’m also thinking about doing a mini-bag of things that will be helpful for the wedding but also can be used later like a pashmina (wedding is in june in chicago, no idea what the weather may be), flip flops from old navy for later on in the evening, either a tolietries or jewelry travel bag with their initial. i’m still in the process of figuring all this out!
