Mrs. Giraffe, Chicago Age and Occupation: 23, Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Music Student Teacher Engagement Date: October 23, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Trinity Lutheran Church & Idlewild Country Club About Me: Coming from the suburbs of the Windy City, you'll often find me with my foot in my mouth while laughing for no reason or telling bad knock knock jokes. I've been crafty for as long as I can remember, and will DIY something twice over before I have someone do it for me. I'm a semi-awkward, typeface obsessed, design junkie and have been know to break out my dance moves for no reason as well as try my best to be ridiculous at all times. My love of pop culture, wordplay, and graph paper almost rivals my love of Mr. Giraffe (who is just the bee's knees). After a 2.5 year engagement, we're planning a modern-in-disguise traditional wedding, and cannot wait!

Making Your a Cake a Little Fancy!

January 27th, 2011 @ 6:05 pm by Mrs. Giraffe

Y’know how there are a few (dozen) completely unnecessary wedding-related things that you just have to have? Like someone to make balloon animals at the reception or 13 pairs of wedding shoes? For me (this time), it was cake flags.

I’m not sure where I first got the idea, but I’m thinking it may have been from the fabulous Mrs. Cupcake.

Of course, Mrs. Lemonade later followed suit with some flags, too.

I’ll be the first to tell you that our wedding doesn’t need these. Chances are they’d be time, effort, and money that I don’t want to spend…

Right, but who could deny something so cute? These are all mostly cupcakes, but they’re just so gosh darn cute. See them for yourself!

Something about them just adds fun and whimsy to their cake counterparts. I never seen them at a birthday/holiday/wedding, but it looks like people use them for all kinds of occasions.

Cake flags of a flag? How cliche!

I love the bright colors on this one!

What do you need for your wedding (that you don’t really need at all)?

I did drink flags and they were SO cheap, SO easy and I loved the way they dressed up people’s glasses, they look adorable in the photos!
This is something you could easily do for cheap, so therefore you should do it! :)

I really want to do drink parasols (: I have no idea how long they’ll take to make, but I can’t get them out of my head

Like the cake flags, very cute. Note sure what else is on the plate in the first image - not looking that tasty.

I made menus for our reception. Were they necessary? Absolutely not, but I though it would be nice to have something at the reception to tie into our wedding theme/colors/invites. In the end, I’m really, really happy I made them and they turned out great!

being a practical bee I would say to you “put the flags down and walk away slowly” BUT the 7th photo is the only one that sold me on the idea. I see these flags all the time at bday parties and such, which is why I would think they aren’t classy enough for a wedding. I think you should go for it if its what you want– Even tho I think drink flags will get more usage and your guest will notice them-with potential of getting some in your photos

There seem to be plenty of “must haves” when it comes to decorating. Too many pretty photos enciting me to want to create it on my own big day!

I love how the cake flags really dress things up, so when I found this stuff called Happy Tape I almost exploded. If you haven’t seen it, you should check it out:

I’m planning on making some flags with folded tape and toothpicks. (The tape jazzes up our invites, too…)

Up until this point, I didn’t really think I NEEDED anything (that I really didn’t need). Key words here: Up until this point. Because now, I’m convinced I need small flags of some sort. TM did say drink flags were SO easy and SO cheap… ; ) Just one more thing to add to the list!

I’m dag-burned determined (yes…I said dag-burned) to use the practical side of my brain as I begin planning my nuptials. In fact, when discussing the details one evening, Mr. Crown said,”Honey, I am confident that you know what’s important. Whatever you want is fine with me.” (Gotta love him for that!) But after seeing the flower-shaped cupcake flags above, I’m salvating worse than Pavlov’s puppy. Do we need ‘em? Nah. Do I want ‘em? You better believe it!
