Curse You Wine Corks!

January 27th, 2011 @ 1:31 pm by Mrs. Elephant

Let’s set the scene, shall we? We’ve come up with the awesome idea to create boarding passes for our escort cards.

The only problem is that they lay flat. There’s nothing wrong with flat escort cards, but I thought that it would be nice to stand them up. Enter the ever popular wine corks.

Should be an easy project, right? Well, not so much for us. See, we don’t have a garage filled with awesome tools, like a saw. We do have XActo knives and steak knives so we thought, “hey we can totally do this on our own!” After picking up 4 packages of wine corks at Michaels, we got to work. Mr. E cut the corks in half while I worked on cutting the slit on the top.

Can you see where this is going?

If you guessed that I would slice my hand, scream at the non-stop blood and curse at the wine corks you would be correct.

I’ll spare you the blood, but here’s my bandaged hand and the cork culprit.

Although I wanted to forge on, Mr. E decided that it might be wise to come up with another plan. He fashioned a stand out of scrap paper to attach to the back of the boarding jacket.

They may not be as cute at the wine corks, but they’re free and it gets the job done. You’re a smart one, Mr. E! It’s one of the many reasons why I’m marrying you. ;)

Oh, and the other 3 bags of wine corks? They were quickly returned for other crafting supplies. I didn’t need any reminders laying around.

Have you had an injuries while crafting your wedding? What are some other ideas that you have used to stand up escort cards?

Oh no! I haven’t had any injuries yet and I’m really hoping that I don’t!

I’m glad to hear that you figured out another, safer plan! :)

I am also using wine cork place card holders, I had a feeling I would end up in the same boat as you so I bought mine on Etsy. I LOVE the plane ticket idea BTW!!!

I was injured as well. didn’t realize that i had crazy glue leaking onto a pair of fleecy pajamas as I assembled some wedding goodies. I had to rip the pants off. I lost quite a bit of skin and had pussy rashy mess.

We used wine corks. My dad did all of them by using a serrated bread knife to cut the bottoms to make them flat and then the slit. No injurys to report.

Yikes! I’m glad you’re ok. The paper sleeves look great though, so don’t fret!

Eek, x-acto knife injuries are the WORST! Mr. E’s idea might not be as cute, but I think they go better with the boarding passes… now you don’t have competing themes in one project. So, win! :)

I actually think that Mr. E’s solution works better for your boarding pass theme!

I like the little cork graveyard in the background of the last picture.

I was lucky to give Mr. L this job….he used a dremel which made it quick, but I was still afraid he would slip and slice off a finger in the process. I only suffered from a few knife cuts, needle pokes, and hot glue burns, but it was all worth it in the end.

I love your idea but can’t find boarding passes anywhere. Did you create them yourself or buy them? If you bought then, where did you get them? Thanks for sharing!
