An Issue With STDs…

January 28th, 2011 @ 3:06 pm by Mrs. Biscuit

No, I don’t have venereal disease.  This is an issue with save the dates, which I suppose is a better issue to have. This post could also be titled How I Came up with My Crazy Wedding Theme.

Before I delve into this story, I’d like to say, great minds think alike…my little (in my sorority) and I came up with the same theme independently. In the beginning when I had first solidified my theme, it was Mad Hatter, and hers is Alice in Wonderland. Sigh. Her wedding is two months before mine, so I have been a bit apprehensive that we’ll have the exact same elements.

The good news is that she is getting married in her backyard, so her wedding will have a much different feel than mine. I decided to forge on with my theme, hoping that our different tastes would prevail and that our weddings would still be different.

But yesterday, her STD came in the mail. First, I’ll show you the file that I had originally designed for my STD:

An Issue With STDs... : wedding diy morgantown save the dates stationery Savethe savethe

I planned on using my trusty Cricut to cut these out in the shape of a tag; attached would be our date in vintage-y paper, with a skeleton key attached to the end. (Please ignore the iPhone pictures…I can’t find my camera. :(

Twine!!!!

And here’s my friend’s STD:

An Issue With STDs... : wedding diy morgantown save the dates stationery Photo2 photo2

WHYYYYYYY?!?

It was far more attractive in person. Remember: bad photos today.

I’m not going to lie: this small piece of paper brought me to tears. I know it’s dumb, but I spent quite a bit of time on these things, and now it would look like I just took my friend’s idea. After I pulled myself off of the bed and thought about it, I realized I had a few options:

1.) Say to heck with it and send mine anyway.

2.) Design a brand new STD/use the hankies.

3.) Use my backup design, which has a more “Down the Rabbit Hole” feel to it.

4.) Hit my head repeatedly with the closest blunt object.

I chose to go with option #4 for a while, then realized that there was a better solution: go with my original STDs, but use the backup design for the five or so invitations that would overlap with my friend’s guests. One of my BMs (who was nice enough to listen to me freak out) agreed that this would work. I’m not going to lie, having the last wedding of the summer (out of my friends) sucks big lollipops. I come up with these ideas independently, but others get to execute them first. :(

While I’m glad that the issue is mostly resolved, I feel like I had a real bridezilla moment about a piece of paper. I’m embarrassed that my wedding has made me act this way and, to prevent further meltdowns, I’ve decided to shift my theme a bit. It is now: “Alice attends the Mad Hatter Vintage Garden Tea Party in a Ballroom. She Thinks That the Venue is Odd for a Vintage Garden Party, but is Tripping on LSD, so She Doesn’t Really Care.”

Have you guys had similar issues? Any of your friends have the same color scheme or theme? How did you deal with it?

Im lucky. That did not happen to me. But I do understand your frustration. Isn’t your situation same as that in the movie by Anne Hathaway? I forgot the title, I think its Bride Wars, something like that.

Oooh. That is tough. My BFF is getting married less than a month before me. Luckily our weddings have different feels but I know there will be some overlap. Luckily our number of mutual friends is very slim (almost none) except for a couple males who wouldn’t notice if we wore the same dress.

As for your solution - it’s PERFECT. It’s what I was thinking. I’m glad you and your BM thought of it.

Yes it has happened to me… A very close friend of mine is getting married 2 months before us. We got engaged within 2 weeks of one another. I mentioned my idea for centerpieces she took it and ran. I mentioned my magnet STD she took it and ran. I said my dream dress would be trumpet luckily for me we are not the same body type. I finally stopped talking wedding with her because I was tired of changing my ideas. We talk about the wedding in general terms now instead of specifics.

I understand how you feel totally and I am sure it will work out for the best.

Five invitations overlap? Screw it, send your original design.
Hahahahahhahahaha…yeah, i know, that’s what a reasonable, not in wedding planning mode person would do.
Sounds like you have it figured out but fooey on your friend who has your same idea. Is it just random or did your sorority have bunnies or an Alice In Wonderland tie-in?

Awwww, that SUCKS, Biscuit. I would have been really upset, too. But I’m glad you only have five overlapping guests — it could have been much worse, right?? Your new theme is awesome, anyway.

While I have the issue with my future sister-in-law, who decided to go with our Fall theme for her wedding and have her’s take place the month before mine; lets just say its been your option 4. I eventually just said well wait a second, she is no where close to my style or vision, I want a rustic natural theme with vintage odds and ends, while she wants the farm and john deer tractors. Reason why I feel this way is because I am designer she is the copycat. In her mind its a constant competition between the two of us, in mine, its just I want to finally get married to the one I love and make the day about us and no one else. In the end I am not worried, and neither should you be. Stick to your creativity and brainstorm on ideas outside the box like you have been and push them forward. In doing so you with have a day unique to you and showcasing the personalities of the two you, not someone else.

As for the save the dates, we went with the cheaper more modern way. A website, paired with email blasts, all done by myself. It saved us money, and also people really like it, finding it very useful and informative. We plan to put up our engagement photos, gift registries, venue and lodging information, the works! Minus the traditional formal printed invites. You can check it out here… jonnelleandjason.com.

Be yourselves and be creative, and you will enjoy the day!

Not yet, fortunately, but my theme is “Vintage Garden Tea Party in a Ballroom” too! And I thought I was so clever and original for coming up with that :)

Don’t worry, since we’re not friends, it’s okay. And maybe I’ll come up with some fun things that you can steal, and vice versa, and it won’t matter since no one is attending both of our weddings!

Hang in there - it sounds like you’ve come up with a good solution to the STD conundrum

I just read the book, which I bought purely because of the new Penguin Classics cover. I think this idea could translate beautifully into stationery.

I seriously couldn’t be more pleased with this post. Although the content is a little tragic, you have taken it in stride… not to mention that you’re absolutely entertaining and hilarious.

I pretty much love the new theme. Way to go Biscuit, way.to.go.

I would be lying if I tried to tell you that I would have not melted down in a similar fashion. So, you know, don’t beat yourself up. I’m guessing it’s not just us two either. ;)

at any rate, great solution! Can’t wait to see both in action. :)

I agree that is a great solution to the problem. I also think Moonbeam is on to something with that book cover. The design and color are to die for.

Why even have a theme? What happened to just a regular old drunken celebration with all of your friends and relatives? I guess that’s the difference between a 20 something bride and a 30 something bride or maybe it’s the Croation in me. Anyway, send the STD, who cares, those 5 will find out you have the same theme soon enough. Just hope you have kids first so she won’t take your names. :)

Thanks so much for your ideas everybody! I feel so much better now, but when it happens it was a giant facepalm moment. I actually told my little about it the other day and we had a nice big chuckle about it all haha.
