Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

My Attempts at Illustrating

January 28th, 2011 @ 10:34 am by Mrs. Brooch

Where did we leave off? Oh yeah, I had just left the invitation store bawling and decided I was going to take a stab at Adobe Illustrator! As soon as I got home, I downloaded the 30-day free trial and got to work.

There’s really no way to describe what I went through as a I navigated the program except to say that it was rough. Thank God for Google, because I was typing questions in left and right about how to download vectors and how to work with them. I learned to download new fonts, which was cool, and overall, the process taught me a lot! Mainly, it made me wish I would have paid more attention in Graphics Design class in college (d’oh)! Funny how the semester I took that class was the semester that I met Mr. B! It figures!

Finally, I found a useful tutorial here (I highly recommend it to those of you new to this program), and after almost two weeks of fiddling, this is what I had come up with:

My Attempts at Illustrating : wedding arlington diy invitations stationery Invitat03 Invitat03

Not too bad, eh?

Like most brides, I wanted a few inserts that matched the invitation design.

Here’s what I created for the “Additional Information,” card:

Here’s what the mock up for our “Reply” card looked like:

For a first attempt EVER working with Adobe Illustrator, I have to admit I was pretty proud of myself. Was I sold and completely in love with my design, though? Not quite. I loved the butterfly, which actually appeared by accident (I shrunk and turned a swirl vector upside down), but I didn’t like the damask print. It got distorted whenever I stretched it and for the life of me, I could not figure out how to set it so that the dimensions remained the same. I also wasn’t crazy about the bright green either.

Then, I discovered something else—I’m a perfectionist. I was changing fonts and moving things around every night, never ceasing. I was relentless searching the Internet for free downloads and kept starting over. I was obsessed and every day I was fiddling with it to the point that I left absolutely no time to figure out the printing process. When I tried just printing it at home, it looked awful! It looked cheap and even on card stock, it wasn’t good enough. Did I mention it took like 3 days just to figure out how to save the file?

At this point, I was having flashbacks of my nightmare with the e-party invitations. Ugh.

So, what did I do? I went back to Plan A and told myself to FIND SOMETHING TO ORDER, DAMMIT! Mr. B was onboard, too! His words were, “I don’t care how much it costs. Find something!” My free trial ended and I didn’t even have a means to access the files anymore. Off we went back to Etsy…

Did you try to make your own invitations? Were you successful?

So who are you going with on etsy? I was inspired after reading your last post and I tried to download the trial… But after becoming impatient with the download, I am now aware that this DIY project could take over my life!!!
I am looking for a trained professional at this point Ha ha!

Very aware of my inabilities,
Jennie

I am making my invitations on the http://www.Sumopaint.com application. It is amazing!! Works identical to photoshop, but it’s FREE..always! You can save the files on there or on your computer so you don’t have to worry about losing anything. Highly recommend it to any DIY bride! You should try it if you want to take another stab at making your own without losing it all.

@jenniepumpkin: That sounds like me! I was so overwhelmed! I think if you have some experience those programs can be a blessing and really save a person time and money; but for those of us that don’t know what’s what, it’s just a way to drive yourself crazy!

I am really impressed with your invites! If we DIY our invites they are going to be really simple. I can’t wait to see what etsy treasures you picked!

Hey Miss B, I feel your pain because I, too, ‘taught’ myself to use illustrator to make our invites. FI thought it would be a great idea to save $$. And although HE’s the one familiar with illustrator (comp. science major), I’M the one who pretty much did all the work, ugh! Google was my best friend, too. Anyway, I think you did really well! I like the invite suite you designed. I also played around with mine forever, but got to a point where we reached our deadline and they needed to be printed.
I think you should keep working on your illustrator invite! I went to sites like weddingpaperdivas.com and looked at TONS of invites to get inspiration. It helped a lot!

RE: Illustrator, aka my freshman year nightmare… I feel your pain. The program does have a sharp learning curve. I’m too cheap to buy the new versions (using one circa 2001, omg that was 10 hrs ago), so I may just download the 30 day trial. Takes care of my type issue AND forces me to work under a deadline!

I am making my own invitations and it is definitely a HUGE project! I ordered response cards, envelopes and these awesome pocket cards (no fold, just the pocket) to stuff everything in. To dress up the plain stock I ordered a custom rubber stamp on Etsy and hand stamped the reply cards and pocket cards. The stamp is ADORABLE - a mason jar with the word Love instead of Ball. For the actual invitation I ordered yet another custom rubber stamp with the text on it and I am hand stamping handkerchiefs that my mother already happened to own. I have seen projects like this where people had the hankies screen printed but I found that the stamp works quite well with the right ink. So far pretty successful…I’ll have to post pics when they are done!

I’m designing my own layout and then uploading the file to vistaprint. Hopefully it all goes well!

Take a look at http://www.weddingclipart.com/images-templates/butterfly.html ?
They have invite templates with butterflies. :) :) The membership is about 40 bucks and you have access to all their templates (invites, programs, power point, etc.).

Don’t beat yourself up too much about the details of your invite… I’ve been invited to A LOT of weddings (20+) and there isn’t one memorable invitation I could tell you about! I love the feeling of just being in reciept of an invitation! As long as it has the pertinent info guests need–there’s no need to get elaborate (besides nowadays people are more likely to hate on you for being so wasteful and non-ecofriendly)
good luck with your search

So awesome! Wish I was brave enough to attempt that! How/where are you going to print them?
