There’s something you should know about me: I’m not cosmetics girl. I was blessed with clear skin growing up and never bothered to learn how to wear it—meaning that twenty-six year old me has absolutely no idea where to even start with makeup. Imagine a child finger-painting on cardboard: well, that’s me attempting to make myself up.
Unfortunately my skin revolted in recent years—mostly thanks to PCOS & some crazy, crazy hormones. Getting acne when you’re well out of your teenage years is just plain mean. So what does all of that mean for me? Well, it means that my face is now in dire need of a whole lot of concealer. My morning regime is usually as far as covering up the spots & scars under my chin & neck, and then throwing some brown mascara on, in the hopes of making my fair eyelashes actually look like they have some length.
Suffice it to say that I was both exhilarated and terrified of having my makeup done for the wedding. Exhilarated because…makeup! Being prettified! Looking all smooth and made up on the wedding day, and showing off a more glam side of myself for the wedding. But terrified because…makeup! Looking like a clown! Unnatural! Not covering enough!
I had to invest in a professional.
Doing it myself would’ve meant purchasing all of the equipment and brushes, as well as an investment of time and patience; neither of which I’ve got a whole lot of right now. Fast forward to me finding the fabulous Jenny, of Le Fabulous. She looked fun, the photos on her website were great, she does both hair AND makeup and best of all—she was mobile! Perfect for what I was looking for.
First things first, though: the inspiration. I think Katherine Heigl is drop-dead gorgeous, and I’ve always wanted to look like her, so I’ve had her wedding pictures saved as my makeup dream. Isn’t she stunning?

I got to meet my stylist, Jenny, for the first time last week, when she visited me at home to do a hair andmakeup trial for me. Here’s the {slightly scary} sight that greeted her that morning:

I don’t think I usually look quite that washed out and flushed all at the same time, but I’d just had a last minute hot shower and hair wash. Excuses, excuses. NOW you can see why I needed me some making up, eh? Jenny arrived with her goodies in tow and set up on my kitchen table; check out that spread of goodies! If you look closely, you’ll see an air-brushing machine—something I was really interested in:

We started off with makeup, beginning with one of those ‘I can’t believe I’m posting this on the internet’ pictures that all Before & After photo shoots should have, don’t you think?

After adding some concealer to cover my spots, the next step was the base foundation. The air-brushing machine was really great! It covered evenly and aside from the dorky hair-net, it went on easily and looked really natural. Jenny then went on to create a simple, natural wedding look for me – nice neutral shades followed by some gorgeous eye makeup & a few individual fake lashes. This was the end result:

What I loved most about working with Jenny was the way she listened to my concerns. She was very helpful & honest about putting on slightly more makeup for the cameras and to make sure it would last throughout the day, and as I began feeling more comfortable, we ended up putting on a little extra eye makeup at the end of the trial, just to test it out.
I think that on the wedding day, I’ll probably add just a tiny bit more of everything, focusing on extra concealer, blush and eyes.
Here’s one last silly photo for effect—they’re crazy eyes of the good variety, I promise.

Stay tuned for more! Coming up next: the hair trials and the entire look put together.
