Mr. Bacon and I have put on some pounds since last summer when he put a ring on it. There is no use trying to sugarcoat it. In fact, sugarcoating it is the reason we’re in this little pickle. Note all the yummy food references?

We are instituting our own special kind of “biggest loser” to get us in tip-top shape by the big day. We both are aiming to be the same weight we were five years ago when we met. Call me crazy, but c’mon—that’s not so long ago. Some of this is vanity. Well, a lot of it is vanity, but mostly we recognize that we are in our mid twenties, and if we don’t shape up now we won’t be able to do it later. We sat down over the first weekend of 2011, made goals, and weighed in. While we had a reward system last year that led to a slim down in the spring, we are adding even more rewards and a pretty tough layer of penalties. You see, last year there was no penalty for not hitting our goals, just a reward if we did, so when we both stopped hitting our goals there was no recourse.
This year we get cold hard cash for heading to the gym, eating protein bars and shakes, and—of course—meeting our monthly weight goals. But to make it juicier, we have to pay up if we slip up. For me, if I eat dessert more than twice a week, I pay a fine. For Mr. Bacon, if he has a beer more than twice a week, he pays up. If we miss our weight goals for the month, not only do we forfeit all of the cash we earned all month, but we also have to give up some food item that we really like for the next month. Things on the docket are dessert, alcohol, pizza, bacon (oh yes, our namesake), Chinese takeout, dairy (I love cheese!), and anything else that could make your mouth water.

We’ve both been to the gym more times this year than we went in all of November and December combined, not to mention that I’ve recently fallen in love with a little thing called Bikram yoga (hot yoga on steroids!). I’m really proud of us that we are pushing ourselves to be healthier in 2011 and making lifestyle changes that should keep us healthy in the years to come. Right now we’re only a month in, but I think it’s really helping to motivate us.
How are you staying on track with your New Year’s resolutions now that they aren’t so shiny and new?
