Low-Fat Bacon

January 28th, 2011 @ 3:49 pm by Mrs. Bacon

Mr. Bacon and I have put on some pounds since last summer when he put a ring on it. There is no use trying to sugarcoat it. In fact, sugarcoating it is the reason we’re in this little pickle. Note all the yummy food references?

We are instituting our own special kind of “biggest loser” to get us in tip-top shape by the big day. We both are aiming to be the same weight we were five years ago when we met. Call me crazy, but c’mon—that’s not so long ago. Some of this is vanity. Well, a lot of it is vanity, but mostly we recognize that we are in our mid twenties, and if we don’t shape up now we won’t be able to do it later. We sat down over the first weekend of 2011, made goals, and weighed in. While we had a reward system last year that led to a slim down in the spring, we are adding even more rewards and a pretty tough layer of penalties. You see, last year there was no penalty for not hitting our goals, just a reward if we did, so when we both stopped hitting our goals there was no recourse.

This year we get cold hard cash for heading to the gym, eating protein bars and shakes, and—of course—meeting our monthly weight goals. But to make it juicier, we have to pay up if we slip up. For me, if I eat dessert more than twice a week, I pay a fine. For Mr. Bacon, if he has a beer more than twice a week, he pays up. If we miss our weight goals for the month, not only do we forfeit all of the cash we earned all month, but we also have to give up some food item that we really like for the next month. Things on the docket are dessert, alcohol, pizza, bacon (oh yes, our namesake), Chinese takeout, dairy (I love cheese!), and anything else that could make your mouth water.

We’ve both been to the gym more times this year than we went in all of November and December combined, not to mention that I’ve recently fallen in love with a little thing called Bikram yoga (hot yoga on steroids!). I’m really proud of us that we are pushing ourselves to be healthier in 2011 and making lifestyle changes that should keep us healthy in the years to come. Right now we’re only a month in, but I think it’s really helping to motivate us.

How are you staying on track with your New Year’s resolutions now that they aren’t so shiny and new?

I ordered my dress in the size that I tried on, which was just a lil tight. It zipped up, but it wasnt comfortable to sit :P

So far, I have been asking myself…”is this worth it?” before I put something deliciously evil in my mouth hehe

I think you’ve got a really successful outlook! Best of luck to you and Mr. Bacon. Our resolution was to quit smoking - and we did! Almost a whole month down and we couldn’t be happier.

I’ve made a commitment to head to my gym four days a week. My gym offers so fantastic classes so it’s been helping me stay on track.

I’ve been hitting the gym 4-5 times a week. My goal is also to get to the weight I was when we started dating almost 5 years ago! I’ve slipped up a couple of times since I wasn’t seeing the numbers move, but I’m trying to stay motivated. It helps that my MOH/sister is willing to hit the gym with me after class. It’s a struggle, but I think your system is a great idea!

Awesome! My bf and I definitely need to hit the gym. We have been dating about 3 years and I have gained 20lbs! I would like to get down to the weight/shape I was in when we met and then 5 lbs smaller for good measure. Motivation has been a real challenge but I am working on it. Congrats and good luck to you and Mr. B!

Maybe I’m missing something but I’m confused, where does the money come from? Isn’t it yours in the first place? :S

Kick some butt in that Bikram yoga, Bacon! I haven’t tried it (I do a hot vinyasa style), but any and all yoga is so good for you and can be such an awesome workout! You’ll feel so good about the positive changes in your body that you’ll want to keep filling it with healthy foods rather than junk!

@Tickles: We have cut all of our shopping and fun money so that the only way I can buy a new top or he can buy a cup of coffee is with this weight loss money.

Digging one of Susan Sly’s 90-day plans right now. Buddying up with some friends, too. I got to a slow start with it, so I’ve only wiggled out of 3 lbs so far, but the dude in our buddy group has released 14.5 lbs in 3 weeks. Having my friends kick my ass helps.

That’s a great idea to use rewards! if you’re looking for something different, one of my best friends runs a women only bootcamp in the loop in Chicago and another location in Logan Square. I’ve lost about 50lbs since I started and have another 10 to go before the wedding (9/10/11).

I’m wishing you the best of luck! Mr. H and I both packed on the pounds when we started dating, and it took the upcoming wedding to motivate losing it. With focus and hard work, you can totally do it!!
