Mrs. Bacon's Picture
Mrs. Bacon, Chicago Age and Occupation: 26, Digital Advertising Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, IT Client Services Engagement Date: June 17, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Ravenswood Billboard Factory About Me: I'm a Midwestern girl that can't seem to commit to staying in one place for too long and is constantly daydreaming about my next adventure. I am an aspiring foodie with a weak spot for the unusual and I love semi-reality food television. My other loves easily include laughing as a form of exercise, a book that I can't put down, summer baseball games, espresso with whipped cream, couch potato days and nights with the ridiculous Mr. Bacon, and our two kitties, Lincoln and Sawyer. We're planning a faux-destination wedding for 150 of our closest friends and family in the city we've both adopted as home that has a modern, yet whimsical twist and as many personal touches as we can manage.
About Mrs. Bacon

Manolo! Christian! Jimmy! TOM?

January 29th, 2011 @ 6:20 pm by Mrs. Bacon

I love shoes. I love trying them on. I love buying them. I love that moment when you take them out of the box for the first time. I love unwrapping the paper and taking out the stuffing that keeps the shape during shipping. I love trying them on with every possible outfit in my closet to make sure that I can wear those babies as much as possible.  So what am I wearing for the big day?

I have dreamed of a pair of red-heeled beauties for years. You know the ones: the sky high, red-carpet regulars: Christian Louboutins. The wedding is actually the best excuse I can come up with to drop some serious change on a pair of heels like these:

Or what about the “so hot right now” and so adorabley flouncy Badgley Mischka babies that I keep running into?

Then, of course, there are the “Something Blue” pumps, so named because these have become one of the most popular wedding shoes of our generation, thanks to Sex and the City. I could feesibly throw my red-shoe vision to the wind in order to wear these iconic beauties.

To Mama Bacon’s dismay, and the shock of many of my peeps, I’m going to go in a completely different direction. There won’t be a sky-high heel in sight, nor will my toesies be glittering as I dance the night away. I, along with my fantastic BMs, flower girl, and maybe FMIL, will be wearing TOMS. These flat, canvas, super comfy shoes have been my faves since last summer, and I want to be a bride that keeps my shoes on all night, so they are the winners.

As Miss French Toast mentioned, they are “for a good cause” too! For each pair purchased, they give a pair to a kid without…LOVE IT! I’m proud that we’ll be donating seven pairs of shoes with our wedding, maybe even eight if I can manage to convince Mama Bacon that they aren’t as hideous as she thinks they are. I’ll be donning the classic shoe in red, but I’m leaving it up to the ladies to vote and decide if they are all wearing the wedges or flats.

Would you put your ladies in TOMS? Would your mom play along?

I think I would be upset if I was a bridesmaid in your wedding, b/c i am self-conscious of my shortness, and think my legs look stumpy in flats. But I would be fine buying a pair for a great cause and maybe wearing them while getting ready for the wedding around the house or hotel.

I’m all for giving my girls the option of their shoes, I am also giving them the option of 4 different dresses to choose too.

We had a bride wear white Toms (pictures at: http://robertpaetz.com/blog/2010/09/john-nathashas-big-day/ ). They’re certainly comfy, although they’re nowhere as show-stopping fancy as the other options you picked!

Perhaps you could gift a few pairs to your bridal party if you don’t end up wearing them on the day-of?

@Sara: I look pretty funny in flats too, IMO, but I have worn them in friends’ weddings and actually been appreciative of the bride for not choosing some sky high shoe in which I’d be super-uncomfortable standing during the long ceremony. While it’s always good to be conscious of your bridesmaids’ wants, I think that bridesmaids need to remember that this day is about the bride and groom, not about them. So if a friend asked me to wear–for example, a bright yellow, tight, low cut dress with green & purpose polkadot platform boots and a peacock feather in my hair, I’d do it (unless I was allergic to peacock feathers, in which case I’d get a fake one.). Ms. Bacon is asking her girls to wear a comfortable shoe for a good cause…I think that’s wonderful. And even if flats aren’t her BMs’ style, they do have the wedge option as was mentioned in the post. :)

I think it is ok for the bride, as her dress will cover them, but to be honest the pic with the bridesmaids in their stunning short dresses and stumpy Toms does not inspire me in the least. I would cry if it were me having to wear it. ( I am a diva, and I agree with Sara and her stumpy leg comment)

Buy them as gifts for them to dance in after the ceremony- that way the donation still happens, they are comfy for the reception, and you can get some quirky photos.

Sorry for being blunt. : (

I am with the other people, yes they are fun and cutesy but they make my feet hurt SOO much. I would as a BM wear whatever dress my bride(and presumably friend) but shoes are very different on different people.

I wouldn’t put my ladies (or myself) in TOMs, I’m with team mom in thinking they are hideous. But your charity in wearing them is admirable.

Yeah, sorry - I’m with the haters here. I think they look really bad with short dresses - and I think it’s kind of unfair to your bridesmaids if they don’t actually want to wear these, because theirs aren’t hidden like yours will be. I’d be pretty upset if I were spending a lot of money on a bridesmaid dress only to have to wear shoes like that and end up looking like that picture you have posted. I realize the day is about the couple’s wishes but - I personally want to make sure my bridesmaids are comfortable both with how they feel AND how they look.

Not a huge fan of Toms and I LOVE flats. I don’t care I am only 5′1″, I wear my ballet flats all the time. I also find the Toms uncomfortable to wear, so I may be super biased.

I’m all for comfort and even more for charity, but TOMS just don’t do it for me. I, too, find them quite ugly. Honestly, I wish they were cuter, ’cause I’d love to buy some in support of such a great cause!

I love them!! I was going to wear a pair of Toms or chaco sandals. My decision to wear chacos for the wedding was so wonderful! I was comfortable and able to be comfortable *all* day.

My bridesmaids will probably be wearing flats as will I. Probably not Tom’s although I love the idea!

Sorry..but I too would be rather dismayed to be forced into wearing Tom’s to a formal or semi-formal event. Maybe if it was on a beach??
Ballet Flats or even converse’s would be cuter! Could you donate money to Tom’s or another organization or as someone else mentioned give them to the BM’s as a reception option??
Sorry again!

I do not get this Toms trend. To me, they really are a very unappealing shoe. If I were a bridesmaid, of course I would wear them but I would never wear them outside of the house again. I would also be secretly disappointed that I didn’t get to wear nice shoes and dress up completely. Maybe they work for a less formal wedding.

Donating to charity is great but if I didn’t have to wear them you’d have to pay me to wear Toms.

Totally Team Mom, here.

I have to join the haters- I think TOMS are completely inappropriate as a wedding shoe if you can see them (ie, with a short dress). But, I do admire your desire to be charitable. AND I am not your BM, so I realize my opinion doesn’t really count :) I say if your BMs are on board, then go for it- but since the girls are probably your friends, you might at least ask them how they feel about it, just because TOMS are not considered to be universally appealing :)

What a brilliant idea! I have opted for the Blue Manolos for my big day, but would definitely by the canvas shoes for the aftermath knowing that they go to a brilliant cause!

Bacon, I think it’s absolutely WONDERFUL that you want to help out needy children. If a bride was choosing something I thought wouldn’t look good, as a BM I would speak up and maybe give a different suggestion. Since it doesn’t sound like yours did, then clearly, they also love the idea! The fact that you gave them an option to add a heel and elongate their leg was great of you. I was a total bridezilla and chose my girls’ shoes without much input; however, if someone was vehemently opposed I would have changed it up. Since your Mom doesn’t like them, it was great of you to let her choose her shoe. I’m sure she appreciates that.

I’m looking forward to your cool shoe pictures! And those children are extremely happy that they have a comfortable way to walk.

i was actually considering a pair of white TOMS for the reception too! our wedding is going to be a green wedding - so i completely am on board with letting your wedding leave a mark in more way than one. i do like the suggestions of the other bees though in maybe giving the shoes as a gift to your BMs that they could wear at the reception but allowing them to be in more flattering shoes for the ceremony. it’s your wedding though! you should do what YOU want!
