About Miss Oatmeal

Guestbook(s), and The Gift Part 2

January 29th, 2011 @ 3:55 pm by Miss Oatmeal

I’ve noticed a major downside to having a fairly lengthy engagement, and that is, you make many decisions early on in the engagement, thinking you’re being original. Then as the months go by and you continue to obsess over wedding blogs on a daily basis, you find that so many of these details are popping up in dozens and dozens of other weddings.

I’m not, however, going to let this discourage me from using the ideas I originally dreamed up. Not to say I made them up, of course. I was simply inspired before they made it to the big time.

So what’s a prime example of this? The gorgeous and wonderfully “unique” wedding tree.

I’m sure you’re all at least mildly familiar with this idea by now and, hell, the Oatmeals are still going to roll with it. I don’t care how many people have done it before us—it won’t take away from us having one all our own.

Luckily, Bridesmaid Oatmeal L is a freakin’ awesomely talented artist and has gladly taken on this project for us. I’d post a picture of her rough draft, but the reality is I don’t have one yet. She sent me a picture on my phone months ago, but now I can’t find it. Bust. However, I assure you it’s going to be perfect. Now I just need to find a super cool antique-looking frame to display it in…

You see the little names on each thumbprint up there? Well, we’re not going to do that. Thumb prints only. It’ll keep it cleaner looking, I think. So, won’t we miss out on our guests writing us well wishes? We’ve got that covered, too!

Remember this post about the most amazing gift ever received? That will serve as our main guestbook for family and friends to write sweet little notes of looooove to us. And without further ado, here are really crappy pictures of the guestbook, full of our seriously awesome engagement pictures taken by Brother Oatmeal. (Really, these photos don’t do it justice, friends…)

And there you have it! I can’t wait to show you our actual engagement photos instead of pictures of pictures. Those are coming up real soon!

Are you having two guestbooks at your wedding, both accomplishing different things? It may be overkill, but it’s so, so “us.”

I’m excited to hear what ya think!

We’ve also been planning on doing a thumbprint tree since before the idea was hugely popular, and I’ve noticed lately that everyone seems to have caught on to the trend. A little disappointing, but I always try to tell myself that the odds of most/any of my guests having frequented wedding blogs like Style Me Pretty is really low, so they’ll probably still be surprised. I love your second guestbook though–very original/cute!

We really wanted the thumb-tree but EVERYONE is doing it here, which makes me a bit sad. We’re still deciding whether we roll with it or go with someone else.

Your e-pics guestbook is BRILLIANT. You have a super talented brother, right there. Gorgeous, Miss O!

Your guests will still enjoy the originality of the thumb print guest book! I was at a wedding last week and everyone was raving about how original the candy buffet was lol.

I am having this same problem! I have SO many ideas, but now I feel that they might be over done before my wedding next summer. I was talking to a coworker of mine who is getting married soon as well, and her wedding was almost identical to mine… (down to to the food!), Im sure she frequents all the sites that I do.
I guess what it comes down to is to just do what you love, and as Kinsey said, most people will have never seen most of it before anyway. Just do what you love! When you look back at your wedding you will remember what you had, not who had it first.

We got married last summer and did the thumbprint tree!

I really don’t think anyone has to worry about it be such a popular trend lately, as the reality is, unless you’re planning a wedding - you have no idea what the trends are. Most people don’t do the trendy things… so I’m sure it’s still a big surprise for most guests when they see it! Our tree certainly was. My DH is an artist, so he drew it for us.

We also had 2 other guestbooks… so I certainly don’t think you’re going over board with two! We had a wood slice guests signed next to the thumbprint tree and we had well wishing cards on the tables with colored pencils for guests to write/draw us something magical.

We got a great response on all three… no one thought it was overkill.

Ahhhh such a great idea. We were going to do that until I started freaking out that it didn’t fit my theme (anal much? Yes.). Mr. Biscuit’s cousin did the wedding tree idea. It was also super cute. A+ Oatmeal! Maybe we’ll do the two ideas as well…*steals idea*

We are doing almost the same thing you are! We have been planing to do the thumb print tree because trees are the closest thing we have to a theme! Also When we booked our photographer we got a free guestbook, however ours will have different questions about keeping love and marriage strong!

I am totally doing two guest books! Partially because I know guests don’t always leave the most though-out (*cough - sober*) messages at the wedding. Having something that doesn’t require on the spot thinking will be a great keepsake and will look lovely no matter what!

Yay for two guestbooks!

as our theme is “into the woods”-the thumbprint tree totally rocks for us. I know it’s popular, but I don’t know any other brides in the real world rocking it, and honestly once it’s up in my house I don’t know if I’ll care.

I feel like all those trends even when they fade out, can still be useful (remember when EVERYONE had paper lanterns?) Wedding blog land aside, I only went to one wedding where people rocked that trend, so I wouldn’t stress about it!

Ideally, we’ll have two guestbooks: a jeroboam (or bigger!!) of wine and a printed album.

I found the thumb print guest book on Etsy a few months before I found Weddingbee. I was shocked! when I found out this was becoming such a common thing. I’m with you though - I’m still sticking with it. We fell in love with the idea and it is perfect for us.

Thanks for posting this. Just last night I was trying to decide if it would be overkill if I had a thumbprint tree guestbook and a photo guestbook. I really want both. Glad to see others think it is okay. Maybe I will do both, rather than trying to pick just one.

I don’t think you need to worry about it being trendy! I think I’d seen it before on here, but this is the ONLY place I’ve seen it. I think that’s how it is with a lot of the things on here (not that it’s a bad thing), so honestly, most of your guests will probably think it’s adorable and a unique idea!

I don’t think you have to worry about anything either (or at least I’m not!). :) I’m doing the exact same thing. Love the thumb print tree - love! But then we also wanted a place for people to write their names and/or well wishes so we’re using a “coffee table book” of North Dakota — just one with huge pictures and lots of white space on the edges. The reason we went with this is that we’re both originally from ND, the wedding is in ND, and then it’s something I can have out on display without it screaming wedding like a lace covered guest book. ;)

I love the family tree idea. I hadn’t seen it with thumb prints before.

I love this idea. I think having 2 guest books is perfectly legal and I would enjoy contributing to both of them.

Yes I have 2 guestbooks as well! ^This tree idea actually- since mine is a winter wedding and our centerpieces are branches and trees were just a big inspiration. So we will have all of our guests put their pretty little thumbprint on our tree to hang in our house, and then we’re also having this pretty cards made for guests to write a note to us and put it in a gorgeous vase that will stay in our living room!
