Flower Power

January 30th, 2011 @ 3:55 pm by Mrs. Biscuit

This morning, while perusing the blog that inevitably makes my wedding feel inadequate, I started thinking about flowers. I’ll be honest, after my not so great meeting with my florist, after which I considered having NO flowers, I hadn’t given this aspect of my wedding much thought. Flowers are pretty and everything; they’re just not my thing. To be honest, Mr. Biscuit is more the flower child/gardener of the relationship.

Notice that I drew our thumbs in proportion to our bodies.

Unfortunately, Mr. Biscuit is more interested in brewing beer than deciding on the florals for our wedding, so I had to take the reins on this one. At first, I didn’t think I was doing that bad of a job. In fact, I had my heart set on these pretty craspedia boutonnieres and matching corsages.

However, Mr. Biscuit chose to stomp on my heart when he decided that he did not want to wear ANY flowers. :(

OK, it wasn’t that dramatic…but it was still a sad day. Then I got to thinking and couldn’t come up with one reason why anyone would need to wear a boutonniere or corsage. Personally, I wouldn’t want to wear one if I were a groomsman or mother of the bride/groom, and the craspedias were the only bouts that didn’t make me conjure up images of Michael J. Fox at a prom. So it was settled. Only flowers for the bridesmaids and me. Woop woop decision making!

Now comes the difficult part. What flowers should my girls and I carry? I found a beautiful bouquet for the BMs:

I think it would look great with their dresses, but maybe it would look a bit weird with their shoes.

So pretty bridesmaids’ bouquets? Done. Pretty bride bouquet? Not so much. A larger version of their bouquet just isn’t going to work with my more formal gown. I’ve found a few ideas for bouquets, but since I possess the brown thumb you witnessed above, I don’t even know the names of half of the flowers. I think I like peonies and ranunculus, and even though it’s not one of my colors, I think I want the blooms to be pink. I also like purple ones. Yep, my flower knowledge is about as sophisticated as a four-year-old’s. Here’s some inspiration I’ve scrounged up:

What kinds of flowers do you think would look best with my dress?  How were you able to pick your bouquet?  Is anyone else nixing the bouts and corsages?

Ha I have no advice about flowers, just wanted to say that I love that your knowledge of flowers is about as extensive as mine. I definitely did the “I want this color” as opposed to “I want this type”. In the end I used silk flowers so I could pick what looked pretty and not worry about the kind of flower, or price or availability. Good luck!

(And also, I’m really enjoying your posts! You make me giggle!)

I’m a “bout-less” bride too! I love the classic look of a tailored tux and to be honest, I kind of think a bout takes away from it. Recently I started thinking this was weird of me, so I’m glad to see another bride forgoing them!

My fiance is also entirely uninterested in a bout. Fine with me - less money to spend!

Your Dress is FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!! Since your BMs are wearing blue, I thought you might like Hydrangeas. They come in an aray of colors and are layers of petals that would coordinate with the ruffles on your dress. Just a thought. :)

I think your bouquet inspirations are very soft, femmy and pretty! I think they would go great with your dress cause of the soft ruffles! you could combine some white/ivory/pinks and even light purples in your bouquet to help compliment the BM dresses? what is your color palate? your bouquet is very pretty for the BM too- we are doing a green/yellow/gray palate-i just love the bouquet you posted! maybe add some purples to help bring the whole look together? remember you do not have to use a flower as a bout! but it is a nice accessory to liven up plain tuxes! i would be happy to post my bouquet and bout inspiration if you wanna PM me!

no bouts or corsages here! We’re growing our own flowers and decided it would just be too much extra hassle to arrange something that the dudes would just end up complaining about anyway.

I hate to break it to you, but peonies will not be in season for your wedding, which means you can still get them but it will cost you an arm AND a leg.

When I was first deciding on flowers for an August wedding I mentioned that I also liked peonies and my mom quickly informed me “they are not in season!” Now, my husband and I use that line whenever we can for a laugh.

@LilMrsChamp: I do like hydrangeas but I also only like pink things. I’m weird. I’m also not worried about coordinating. It will look fine, I’ve decided :).

@Silveramos: My flower prices aren’t hitting me too hard, so I don’t mind spending extra for the peonies. I think I may use garden roses though because they look droopier to me and I like that. Again, not a flower person, I just like pink droopy looking ones haha!

@aunt pol: That was the first thing my mother said! These are just inspiration pics though, I’d probably want them smaller.

I agree with aunt pol that the inspiration photos are too large. Too much fluff in flowers plus the ruffles on the dress will be too overwhelming, especially with your small frame. No corsages for moms, grandmas! ouch! Better make sure they are ok with that.

Forgot to mention that the pic of the crespidia bout looks like the little fuzzy thing from Horton Hears a Who…..no wonder Mr B doesn’t want to wear on.

I love your illustrations I also have a brown pizza thumb lol
I also think your dress is phenomenal!! you can’t be a bride without a bouquet so please don’t go flowerless!! I don’t even have an alternative idea (at the moment) BUT I do like this bouquet http://media.theknot.com/ImageStage/Objects/0003/0037636/large_image.jpg

or some variation of it would be nice with your gown…good luck with your search

I have loved peonies for many years, so I completely understand your fascination with the soft ruffles. Ms Chihuahua is right about adding frilly flowers to ruffled dress. Using flowers with a stronger visual line will provide some balance to your lovely gown.

Consider bold flowers like Lilies. Stargazer Lilies in particular have pretty pink varieties. Another bold floral to consider could be the thistles that are included in your BM bouquet inspiration. I find thistles to add such lovely texture, and also go splendidly next to Lavender which is such a delight to carry in bouquets.

Oh.my.goodness. I could have written this post myself. Miss Biscuit, you may be my long lost twin. The images you showed are the exact ones that I have been looking at for my inspiration! : ) I fell in love with those cute little craspedia balls and absolutely love peonies and ranunculus!

Since my fiancee and I are getting married in the woods this spring, and I plan on making my own bouquets, I’m hoping to use single pink peonies (the ones with the bright yellow centers!), craspedia, cotton bolls, greenery, and some other white flower for filler.

Can’t wait to see what you decide for yours. I know it will be absolutely beautiful!

I feel you on the “I have to have pink peonies even though pink isn’t in our color scheme” sentiment! Same thing happened here.
Also, @Silveramos said that you won’t be able to get peonies for your July wedding, but my wedding is in July and I’ve been told that I’ll still be able to have them. I’m sure it depends where you are and what your florist’s deal is, but don’t lose hope!

… And by “still be able to have them,” I mean, still be able to have them without paying out the wazoo. Peonies are never cheap flowers, but when I asked my florist if I’d have to pay more because of my wedding date, he said no. :)
