French Toast and Donuts

January 31st, 2011 @ 10:10 am by Mrs. French Toast

Donuts hold a very special place in the French Toasts’ hearts. Not just any donut. A blueberry donut.

That’s right. I said a “blueberry donut”.

I’ve never heard of a blueberry donut before so I was really excited to try it when Mr. French Toast told me about a bakery in San Francisco that made sinfully delicious blueberry donuts. One day he drove me to try the said donut. To our utter disappointment, the bakery shop was out of business.

From that day forward, I held it against him that I never got to try the elusive blueberry donut. It just wasn’t the same with a blueberry bagel, muffin or pancakes. That period was short lived though, because a few years later on a random afternoon, Mr. French Toast surprised me with a blueberry donut! By sheer coincidence, groomsman Henry’s family owns a donut shop in the bay area…AND…get this…it turns out that the blueberry donut is one of their specialties!

Henry is so sweet and thoughtful to always bring me a blueberry donut every time he sees Mr. French Toast, so there was no question that we were going to have donuts as favors. Because, who can resist a display like this?

For the packaging, I actually attempted to print our names on the wax bag with my inkjet printer. Major fail. The bag crumpled up and jammed my printer. So it’s back to square one to find a cute way for guests to pack the donuts home. I also liked what Ms. Hippo is doing with her donut favors, so we might also take that route.

In the meantime, Henry has been experimenting with different colors and sprinkles to make the donut look prettier. We’ve decided on a blueberry donut with white frosting and sparkly sprinkles, and a regular donut with pink frosting and white toppings. I’m really excited to share our blueberry donut story with our guests and have them try it too!

What is your wedding favor? Does it have a special significance to you and your SO? I’d love to hear about it!

I love blueberry donuts! They sell them at (you’re going to laugh) the gas station by my work. They’re really good though — maybe not gourmet, but darn good for a gas station donut. YUM. Frosting a blueberry muffin just ain’t the same. :-P

We had donut holes as favors at our wedding! My father owns a bakery and it was the very first thing I had my heart set on after we got engaged. His bakery made all the donut holes and we packaged them in poly bags inside mini gable boxes. It was a HUGE hit!

I don’t even like donuts that much…but those are making me hungry. I’d totally dive face first in that box of white ones.

For those of us Bay Area people, any chance we can get the name of Henry’s family’s donut shop? I have never had a blueberry donut and I am sure it would be a great incentive for us to get more things done off of our wedding todo list!

@Brian – The shop is called Pixie Donuts located in Hayward. It’s a small family-run bakery and their goodies are baked fresh every morning! http://www.yelp.com/biz/pixie-donuts-hayward

Oh, I thought I was the only one who was stealing Ms. Hippos’ donuts thought. Are you serving your hot or are you putting it out in a display?

Those blueberry donuts are all over the place in Texas. They have long been one of my mom’s favorites.

i had my first and best blueberry donut at a random apple orchard in michigan. LOVED them. i would go just to buy these donuts. lol.

i really want to do mini donuts like hippo, not so much as a nod to me and the mister but as a subtle nod to my dad who loved donuts and used to buy us one on saturdays.
