Making It Up

January 31st, 2011 @ 6:56 pm by Mrs. Prairie Dog

I’m a really simple gal when it comes to makeup. I already have a lot of contrast going on (very dark hair, pale skin, blue eyes), so it’s easy for makeup to look “busy” on my visage. In fact, I’d go so far as to say I’m a scared of excess makeup.

It’s important to me to have someone there to do my makeup on my wedding day, for a few reasons. The most obvious is that I’m just not confident in doing it myself. But also, I fear that I will develop some sort of blemish situation that requires heavy-duty coverage. That just seems like something that would happen to me.

Since Zooey Deschanel has similar coloring, I have this look in mind, only a little less lash:

Enter Sarah Cormier, freelance MAC consultant. All the makeup I use on a daily basis, save for mineral powder, is MAC, so it just made sense to find an artist who is familiar with the products.

Here is my before picture:

And here I am after Sarah worked her magic, in head-on natural light:

And with nothin’ but point-and-shoot flash:

And even in some glare:

It felt incredibly light and non-cakey, and I think (I hope…) it looked fresh and spring-y and natural. Sarah was so great, asking all sorts of questions about what I wanted, what I liked. I was nervous that a makeup artist would think I was crazy for wanting a look that was almost not makeup-y, but she totally got it. She went the extra mile to make sure I was happy and felt like me! Plus the makeup lasted for-ev-er, Sandlot-style.

Later, I realized I should probably see how it looked in a white dress. This is a look I’m considering if we go post-wedding English pub-ing:

Oops. Did not angle the camera well for self-portrait. Anyway, that’s this dress with a sheer cashmere sweater in case the May evening is chilly (it’s Ohio- you never know). The necklace is a family piece which is very dear to me.

I went downstairs and paraded around PDog like, “Would you marry this?” He said yes, so we’re good to go!

Are you doing your own makeup, or hiring a professional?

I am so lucky that my sister is a professional! She is a platform stylist, and as a gift she is doing all of my wedding glam… ok, well she is getting one of her girls to do my fingers & toes.

I must be setting a record today for spitting my food/drink out while reading Weddingbee. I also shrieked when I clicked through to the Helena Bonham pic. ;) Moving on: holy crap, you’re gorgeous, PD! Love your outfit in the last photo, too. Very sexy-chic!

I would hire a make-up artist if there were any where I live and if my FI didn’t hate make-up with a passion. He has agreed that I can wear foundation and concealer but is not a fan of anything else. I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t want to kiss me if I looked made up. Luckily I hate make-up too so we work together. It just complicates things for the wedding since I want to look good, especially in pictures. Thanks for reminding me I need to start thinking about it.
