Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance IT Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc Events About Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).

Ready for Weeping

February 1st, 2011 @ 10:35 am by Mrs. Hippo

Unlike Miss Oatmeal, I’m not really much of a crier. The occasional movie will get me, and if I’m really upset or frustrated I will cry, but in general it takes a lot to bring me to tears. Surprisingly, this is not the case when it comes to the wedding. When I think about our wedding day, there are many parts of it that get me a little teary eyed—imagining seeing King Hippo for the first time as I walk down the aisle, thinking about saying our vows in front of all our family and friends, thinking about how much of our hard earned cash we’re putting into this shindig (kidding…OK…I’m not kidding). I have a feeling I will be emotional, and I know as a wedding guest, seeing the bride or groom cry makes me a little emotional too.

Since there is definitely some potential for tears all around I figured we should be prepared, so I armed myself with Mrs. Sunrise’s tutorial and got to work making these Tears of Joy tissue packets for our guests:

This was a really, really easy DIY project and totally inexpensive. Here’s how it broke down:

  • 50 glassine envelopes purchased from eBay - $4.75 (includes shipping)
  • 1 1/2″ round stickers from LabelsByTheSheet.com - $3.12. I purchased eight sheets of 30 round stickers for $0.39 per sheet. I only really needed two sheets to get the job done, but I wanted extras just in case I screwed anything up with the alignment. (Good thing I did ’cause it took quite a bit of trial and error to get these right!) Shipping was extra, but I purchased labels for some other projects at the same time and had them all shipped together for an additional $5.35.
  • Pocket tissues - $3.77. I used the store brand to save a couple of cents, but these are NYC prices. So if you live anywhere else, I would imagine you could find these for cheaper! I used two tissues per envelope and it was a perfect fit.
  • “Ribbon” decoration - $0. Instead of using ribbon to decorate the envelopes like Mrs. Sunrise, I used some of the extra paper I had on hand from our wedding invitations, so we’ll call that free!
  • Total - $16.99 (which includes shipping of envelopes and labels)

What was your easiest DIY wedding project?

I bought mine thru American Bride, 6 tissues in a little envelope, and it came with monogrammed sticker, I just had to place the stickers. I didn’t even think of doing them myself. Good job!!!Very cute, inexpensive gift.

curious. How many do you figure you will need. Let’s say for a crowd of 100? Average ratio of men, women and kiddos? I’m trying hard not to make too much of anything but I also don’t want to run out of the important things. Thought?
These are super cute btw. I need to make a monogram. New list item.

@MassageBee: I’m having about 120 guests and made 50 tissue packets. I think it will be more than enough.

I don’t think that anyone is going to cry now that I’m getting married. I think my mum has been waiting for this day for 10 YEARS :(

Your tears of joy packets came out so cute!! I love that you decided to use leftover paper instead of spending money on ribbon like I did. I had so much extra paper… why didn’t I think of that?? hehe. You are such a smart one, Hippo. LOVE!
