About Mrs. Eggs Benedict

My Wedding Fear

February 1st, 2011 @ 11:33 am by Mrs. Eggs Benedict

I’m not too worried about most of our wedding. I think it’s because no matter what, at the end of the day, Mr. EB and I will get married in front of our friends and families, and we’ll throw a kickass party with some amazing food and wine. And if anything happens with any of the details? It’s OK—this is the beginning of our lives together, and new beginnings always have some kinks that need to get worked out.

But the one thing I am worried about? The weather. Specifically I’m really worried about snow. We can deal with any other weather, but snow jacks up everything in the Northwest. And if the weather goes in two-year cycles, then this winter we just might be screwed.

Last winter it only snowed once in Portland, and I think all Seattle got was a few flurries. Of course, that one day came out of nowhere the week after Christmas and turned my normally 25-minute commute into more than six hours (including my having to put on chains in nice work slacks and heels—it was awesome, let me tell you). But the year before that both cities got snowed in for over a week, and everything shut down. Oh, and did I mention it was the week before Christmas? Mr. EB was snowed in for three days before he could get out of the city and drive to his parents’ house, and I didn’t even chance driving to my parents’ house in my car. My dad made the drive from Seattle to come get me so I wouldn’t be stranded by myself for Christmas.

Growing up on the East Coast I saw how things are supposed to work in snowy areas. People know how to drive in snow. And cities plow the roads regularly. The problem in the Northwest is that snow for us is still a pretty rare occurrence. Couple that with inexperienced drivers, cities with practically no snowplows, and an effing ton of hills, and you get scenes like this:

And this:

And this, which happened right before Thanksgiving:

So why am I sharing my worries about snow now? We had our first snow day right before Thanksgiving. Or as people on twitter were calling it, #snomg 2010. And according to weather forecasters, we’re facing a La Niña winter, which generally means wetter, colder, and snowier weather in the Northwest.

Awesome.

I’m really hoping the weather gods gets this out of their system before our wedding. Snow in the Northwest in February is pretty rare, but I’m also worried about the rest of the country, since we’ll have people flying in from all over. I would hate for anyone to be stuck somewhere and not be able to make it out. But I also know that this is one of those things I have absolutely no control over. We knew that it could be a possible issue when we signed up for a winter wedding. But given that the snow is now falling, my worrying is definitely going to increase.

Taken out our front door. It’s so pretty! Also icy.

Anyone have tips for dealing with weather-related stress?

We got married last month, and snow was my biggest concern. Here is Missouri, snow literally shuts everything down, and we had a lot of out of town guests.
There wasn’t anything I could do, so I just focused on the things I did have control over. Our wedding day hit record highs, it was 70 and sunny all day (it dropped to 20 that night, but by then we were at the reception.) It was fantastic, I will pray for the same for you! :-)

I’m having a March 2012 wedding in the Northeast where we’ve been hit by a ton of snow lately. My fiance’s mother (who’s bday is in March) likes to remind me of crazy March storms that have ruined her bday plans. I choose to ignore it and think happy thoughts, because at the end of the day we can’t do anything about the weather. :(

Ahahahaha love that first video…it just keeps going, and going, and going…I hope the drivers were laughing by the 4th, 5th, 6th, consecutive pin ball machine-ish collisions!

Not to jinx anything, but… I think you’re going to be fine. As skiiers, we were hoping for the massive snow-dump La Nina winter that everyone was promising, and so far it’s been dry dry and more dry, and looking like more of the same. Now, if you have people flying from the East coast, then they absolutely might be at risk of delayed or canceled flights in the event of snow, which of course they’ve been getting by the truckload. Just keep checking Cliff Mass…

I am a NW girl as well! I totally ‘get’ your concern. The portland video was actually filmed on th road next to my old work. (needless to say that was a very very entertaining day at work) I also just moved from Seattle after living there for years. I was part of that week before Christmas craziness. I was stuck in Seattle and a family friend had to come pick me up and take me home to Olympia to be with my family!

So I hear ya! And I will be thinking good thoughts for you! Because the Pacific NW cannot handle even a half inch of snow without chaos.

But think of some February days in Seattle that have been sunny and gorgeous with the mountains out! I will hope for one of those days for you :)

Wow, we just moved from Syracuse to Portland and we’d heard about people just sliding down hills, but I hadn’t really believed that it would be that bad. I’ll be sure to stay off the streets if it gets icy. If its any consolation, they said it was supposed to be La Nina this year, but the last few weeks have been beautiful. As I sit here, the sun is pouring through my windows and I had a great view of Mt hood and mt st helens this morning. Here’s keeping my fingers crossed that the beautiful weather continues. (although not for too long, I gotta go skiing)

No tips from a gal in California, but I’m sure it will all work out. If snow is rare in February, you have nothing to worry about! Sending good weather vibes up north to ya :)

My friends got married on New Year’s Eve and we got over a foot of snow. There were people (myself included) in church with dresses and snow boots. We all made it there because we wanted to be there, and the snow added to the fun of it all. And my favorite pictures ever are of them kissing with snow falling all around them. Beautiful!

This is one thing I’ve been worrying over too. You’d think getting married in May would fix this issue but last year there was a big storm on the exact day we are getting married this year. I just try not to worry about it and figure if it happens and some people aren’t able to make it, that it just means that they weren’t meant to be there. That’s my stance, what’s meant to happen will happen. I so wish I could control the weather though, that would cut my stress down in general, lol.

Let’s just hope the rest of this winter is exactly like today. Bright, sunny, and almost cloudless. Too bad it’s f’ing cold. But seriously, days like today make you glad you live in Seattle, right? I’ll keep my fingers crossed that it doesn’t snow again. I’d like to keep my PTO for vacations, thank you very much.

@shannag: I was just thinking how great it would be if the weather were like today! It’s absolutely gorgeous today and you’re right - it’s days like this that make me never want to live anywhere else. But we’ll see what it decides to do for our day…

Our Beautiful Venue | Weddingbee

[...] Oh, you guys! I had the best present come in my Google Reader. More photos from the IslandWood wedding!!! Every time I see pictures of our venue I get more and more excited about everything. And yes, there is 100% more sunlight in all of these photos, but that’s OK! Why? Because our February winter wedding is going to be fabulous no matter what the weather (uh, as long as there isn’t five feet—or five inches—of snow the day before). [...]

That portland snow driving video is one of my favorites to pull out when I tell people in Colorado how people in Portland drive during inclement weather! I know it’s terrible, but I just can’t help but laugh at it - it’s so ridiculous, it almost looks staged!
