Mrs. Panther's Picture
Mrs. Panther, Atlanta GA/Westport CT Age and Occupation: 24, Web Writer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Music Recording Engineer Engagement Date: March 13, 2010 Wedding Date: July 2011 Venue: The Inn at Longshore About Me: I'm a total goofball who goes through life at a breakneck pace, trying not to knock anything over. I tend to fall in love with everything I encounter, but more than anything, I love my two little kitties, Bela and Josie, and my big kitty, Mr. Panther! As a wannabe crafter, I'm still waiting for my artistic talents to emerge. (Any day now, really.) In the meantime, I spend my days eating anything put in front of me, buying every pair of shoes I see and absorbing wedding inspiration from every inch of my surroundings. Mr. Panther and I are hardcore New Englanders planning Connecticut nuptials from our new home in the Dirty South, and can't wait to mix our newfound love of classic Southern charm with some modern city touches.
About Mrs. Panther
Hi guys! Guess what? I’m finally making some progress with the table numbers! Hooray!I bought the fabric I mentioned in my last table number post, and was thrilled to find that fabric.com ships from Atlanta. My fabric came overnight! Meanwhile, Mr. Panther and I were searching the state for flourishy, ornate picture frames. We bought a mix of 4″x6″ and 5″x7″ frames from TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, HomeGoods and Goodwill. And, I even got most of my wooden numbers from Michaels. Unfortunately, 1s and 2s are very tough to find—I still need to hunt down a few more!

I already had a bunch of metallic acrylic paint from my failed attempt at using Mrs. Gloss’ edge painting technique on some test invitations, so I busted it out and tested it on some extras 6s and 7s. I only had four extras, so I used two colors per number. I will NOT be using more than one color per number for the final product!

One of the sets was primed using Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Spray Primer. Can’t tell which one? Yeah, I can’t either. It didn’t really help, but I think I’m going to give it another try. Anywho, I used four different shades of paint and then held them over the three fabrics. I decided I’ll use all of them except for the lighter purple.

I think I’ll also use gold paint for the fabric on the right, since the purple, aqua and teal all kind of blend into it. Don’t worry, I’ve got some of that left from the failed edge painting, too! It was a very extensive attempt—I bought a LOT of paint.

After my paint test, I started adding fabric to the frames, using the tutorial by Dill Pickle Picnic. It started off all right.

But soon, I realized that not all of my frames were going to cooperate.

Working with Glass Is Scary (Table Numbers, Continued) : wedding atlanta crafts decor reception tutorial 41 4

See that icky yellow stuff? It’s GLUE, and a bunch of the glass pieces in my pretty frames are attached with it! Drat, drat and double drat! Some of them were glued loosely, so I tried pushing gently to pop the glass out, but honestly, pushing on glass is terrifying to me. Fun fact: When I was seven years old, I tried to spin myself around in a rotating armchair by pushing on my living room window with my feet. My right foot now has a scar shaped like the continents in the southern hemisphere. Anyway, one of the pieces of glass in my picture frames broke in the corner, and I got scared and stopped pushing. Mr. Panther thinks I can use a blow dryer (or maybe my heat embossing tool?) to melt the glue a little bit, but I haven’t tried it yet. I’m kind of afraid to warp the wood. Anyone have any suggestions?! Should I just punch through them?

Once I figure out this picture frame thing, I’ll prime and paint the numbers, then get to attaching them. Hopefully, they will look like this, but way more awesome:

My apologies for the craptastic iPhone photos! Mr. Panther was out of town last week, and he took his fancycam with him. How RUDE.

Has anyone else attempted a DIY project and run into a snafu? Did you figure it out and forge forward?

Could you not just glue the number to the glass if you are afraid of taking it out?

So far they look very nice!

@ktmcculloch: I hope so! I was a little concerned that the white ones weren’t formal enough, but I loved them so much I couldn’t resist!

@mrsjesse: I COULD, but I feel like the tactile effect would be lost without the ability to see/feel the texture of the fabric, you know?? Hmmm.

@Miss Jaguar: Haha! It’s so easy to confuse one big, awesome cat for another big, awesome cat. ;-)

I know how you feel we were gonna use the two sided white ikea frames but I don’t think they will work in the room….back to square one for me :)

These are fabulous. I think you should try a hair dryer or maybe see if Mr. Panther would be willing to break the glass with a hammer.

One of my hobbies is stained glass, and although I’m a beginner in the art form, I know a little bit about glass properties.

I do not recommend using a hair dryer to loosen the glue. If it’s epoxy-based, or of any substantial strength, a little bit of heat won’t do much. If anything, it will cause your glass to crack.

If you’re nervous about messing with the glass, wear thin gardening gloves with the plastic sticky dots for grip. If you’re REALLY nervous - have a clear working space, wear safety goggles, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes.

One route is to try a serious glue remover (like goo-gone), except that has the potential to remove the paint and harm the wood (and stink). Another is to get a glass cutter, and try and cut around the glue.

Long-answer short, I’m sorry to say I think living with the frames glass-in will be the least stressful. Some of the tactile texture of exposed fabric will be reduced, but your SANITY is more important than those uber-little details. <3

…oh, I feel like I should add:

If you really think punching out the glass via hammer-style is smart…PLEASE BE SAFE! The edges that remain on the corners will be sharp. Don’t touch them the wrong way. If you .do. try and break the glass out, try some hot glue along the edges of the remaining glass to keep yourself safe during handling.

Another outside-of-the-box thought is - what if you glue the fabric to the outside of the glass? You could roll the edges under nicely, maybe even put a top stitch along to form a hem, and adhere them to the glass. That way - no glass breaking, and still you have the fabric texture exposed to view.
