Music for the ‘Maids

February 2nd, 2011 @ 4:37 pm by Mrs. Hippo

One thing that’s been on the Hippo to do list for quite some time is finalizing all of our ceremony music. We’ve decided on our pre-ceremony music and our recessional song, but when it comes to the songs for the bridesmaids’ and bridal processional, we’ve been stuck. See, King Hippo and I don’t always agree on music. While my processional music suggestions include songs by female artists like Sarah McLachlan, Ingrid Michaelson and Adele, King Hippo can only take so much of these ladies and leans more toward the likes of Band of Horses, Death Cab for Cutie and Jason Mraz. Don’t get me wrong… I think these artists are great, but when it comes to finding the one or two songs that will play during the ceremony, I’m just not feelin’ it. But finally…FINALLY…we came to an agreement on one of the songs.

Our house party and bridesmaids will walk down the aisle to this winner:

I love that it’s non-traditional, yet sweet. Upbeat but not too upbeat. And the fact that we can get through the entire first verse and chorus in under one minute is a double win since I know it won’t take a huge amount of time for the nine ladies to process. Guests will “get it” even if we don’t get to play the whole thing.

Now, figuring out what I will walk down the aisle to is still up in the air, and I’m starting to think that we won’t ever come to an agreement on that one. I’d love some suggestions, hive! What contemporary songs are you using (or have you thought about using) for your ceremony?

I wanted something that was more reflective of mine love and I… not the traditional wedding music. While we haven’t finalized everything, I’m walking down the aisle to the Vitamin String Quartet’s version of “Wild Horses.” Classical meets rock n’ roll :)

I love that song! I haven’t decided what the maids will be walking down the aisle to, but I will walk to an instrumental version of Bittersweet Symphony. I’m so excited about it!

My girls are going to walk down to: The Samples - Could it be another change (love this song, it does pick up a little ways through but I don’t care, it has special meaning for us). I am still not 100% convinced but our DJ suggested walking down the Aisle to: Israel Kamakawiwo’ole - Somewhere Over the Rainbow. It is a very sweet song and would go well with our casual backyard wedding. I love your choice though!

Have you heard any of Tyrone Wells’ songs? I am thinking of the chorus of “Sea Breeze.” I have the same musical tastes as you, exactly, and FH is more into Muse, Jack Johnson, and oldies like The Eagles. So, I think this song is focuses on the bride, and mixes our two musical palettes well.

I would’ve loved to walk down the aisle to “Here There and Everywhere” by the Beatles (the church wouldn’t allow anything the least bit nontraditional).

I know it’s like the indie version of a classic wedding song, but First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes is nice. I’m not a huge BE fan, but this song just conveys so much so simply.

There’s just so much to consider when it comes to the music! I am a Decemberists, BOH, 80s, and good dance music fan and my fiancee is into Cake, classic rock, and motown.. we’re excited to pull it all together.

I know it’s not completely untraditional but it’s not Cannon in D–we are walking down the aisle together to an instramental version of What a Wonderful World.

Had we gone w/contemporary music, I would have picked All My Life by KC and JoJo. A friend of mine walked down the aisle to that and I thought it was so beautiful!
