Who doesn’t love a good fictional wedding, right? I have found myself weirdly overcome by watching made-up characters pledge their half-hour sitcom lives to each other. While I’ve always enjoyed TV nuptials, I now find myself earmarking ideas from everywhere, including my shows.
There are some things I scribble in my mind as a list of “no nevers.” Though it pains me to betray Ralph Lauren, I have to say that my bridesmaids would probably quit my wedding if I asked them to wear a floral dress, with an Edwardian funeral garb collar, intense side-boob, and Karl Lagerfeld gloves:
But as for TV wedding moments that we love? Well, we’ll definitely be playing “Eight Days a Week” as an homage to Turk and Carla’s wedding:
We caught onto Friends about a decade late here in Casa Prairie-Dog, and we still cackle like banshees at episodes we’ve seen a dozen times. I always loved Monica’s bridal look, but now that we’re engaged, we notice all kinds of things.
Mr. PD: “Uh, why is Chandler’s boutonniere a rose, when all the other flowers are lilies…?”
Me: “Huh. Rachel and Phoebe wore totally different jewelry.”
< (”James Brolin is the father of my baby.”)
I always tear up at Phoebe’s beautiful winter wedding to Mike Hannigan. C’mon- “you are my family now” and the steel drums playing Here, There, and Everywhere? Cue waterworks. But mostly because Paul Rudd has been my #1 celebrity crush since I saw him in Clueless, and it’s hard for me to see him with other women.
(What a creepy way to doctor a photo, right? I should be sorry, but I’m not.)
Wait, what were we talking about? Oh right. TV weddings.
One of my all-time favorite wedding episode is a two-parter. Marshall and Lily’s wedding from How I Met Your Mother.
While looking for that picture, I also found a cute video of Alyson Hannigan trying on other contenders for Lily Aldrin’s wedding dress at Monique Lhuillier. See here.
Anyway, I think a lot of married or almost-married couples feel a sort of camaraderie with Marshmallow and Lily Pad…because who else do we have to relate to? So many shows are propelled by on-again-off-again, will-they-won’t-they couples. For those of us who went to college with our significant others and have been together for 8+ years, these two are pretty much all we have by way of long-term couples who still have fun and love each other.
I wish I could just link the whole Erickson-Aldrin wedding for you, but instead I’ll just highly recommend both episodes (at the end of Season 2- called “Something Borrowed” and “Something Blue”). The whole idea is that lots of things can turn out differently than expected on your wedding day, but what matters is that you’re marrying the love of your life.
But last but not least, the TV wedding which made me ugly-cry. “Plan A was to marrying her a long, long time ago. Pretty much the day I met her.” Jim Halpert, you get me every time.
Do you have any favorite TV weddings? Are you stealing any ideas for your own weddings?
