Mrs. Cardigan, Austin Age and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems Analyst Engagement Date: August 16, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Vintage Villas About Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!

The Cardigan Honeymoon: Part 2

February 3rd, 2011 @ 11:05 am by Mrs. Cardigan

Also known as the really, really long honeymoon recap post. Sorry! I just have too much fun stuff to share! The second day of our cruise was our first port day, and it was the only port that Mr. Cardigan and I had already been to: Cozumel!I’m not the biggest fan of Cozumel, because I find that it’s not nearly as interesting as a lot of the other ports, but I will give it one thing…it has the most beautiful water of any place I’ve ever been!

The Cardigan Honeymoon: Part 2 : wedding austin honeymoon 16 1

Look at that color!

I was really excited about the excursion we had booked in Cozumel, but I’ll be totally upfront and let y’all know it wasn’t all I had imagined it to be. It was a zip-lining excursion, which I’ve always wanted to do, but I didn’t realize until we got there that we weren’t zip-lining through a forest or anything…it was just a zip-lining/ropes course set up at a local resort. It was still a ton of fun, but not the exotic adventure I had pictured in my mind!

It was a bit intimidating looking, though!

The Cardigan Honeymoon: Part 2 : wedding austin honeymoon 24 2

As soon as we got there, we got all decked out in our safety gear, and we were ready to go. Now, Mr. Cardy wouldn’t ever admit this, but he was absolutely petrified of this excursion. He’s not a fan of heights or adventure-type things, so this was not his idea of a good time. But he’s an awesome hubby and he booked it for me because he knows how much of a thrill seeker I am!

The Cardigan Honeymoon: Part 2 : wedding austin honeymoon 33 3

He looks a bit unsure in this picture, no?

I felt a bit ridiculous in the get-up that you have to wear for this. Crazy climbing shoes, a huge helmet, and a super uncomfortable harness. But, it was totally worth it, and I had a blast!

The Cardigan Honeymoon: Part 2 : wedding austin honeymoon 43 4

Look at me go!

Mr. Cardy ended up admitting that he had a really good time, but the whole time we were doing the course he was really looking forward to the next part of the excursion…which just so happened to be the part that I was dreading. Snorkeling.

Why was I dreading snorkeling, you ask? Because I. Hate. It. I know snorkeling is kind of a ridiculous thing to hate, but I have my reasons. For one, I’m extremely claustrophobic and the goggles you have to wear to snorkel totally set that off. I don’t like having my nose covered up and I get really stressed out the second I put them on.

I could deal with the stress of the goggles if it wasn’t for the fact that the first two times I went snorkeling, I had horrible experiences.

The first time I ever snorkeled it was in Cozumel on my first ever cruise. I was loving it and had been in the water for, oh, I don’t know, about 3 minutes when I got stung ALL up and down my leg by a really mean jellyfish.

I decided to give it another shot on my second cruise in Grand Cayman, but the waters were so insanely wavy that day that every time I tried to put my head down a wave would splash over me, shooting salt water into my mouthpiece.

So, um, yeah. Snorkeling isn’t my thing. I was very, very stressed the whole time we went and I’m embarrassed to admit that I almost had a full-on panic attack. But, I survived, and Mr. Cardy had a blast, so that’s all that really matters, right?

The Cardigan Honeymoon: Part 2 : wedding austin honeymoon 53 5

We snorkeled for a while, then grabbed a drink from the bar at the hotel before heading back to the ship. We were pretty exhausted after our all-day adventure in Cozumel, but we still mustered up the energy for my absolute favorite cruise activity that night.

Before I tell you what it is, you have to promise not to laugh.

Promise? Because it makes me look kind of lame. (Okay, really lame.)

The Cardigan Honeymoon: Part 2 : wedding austin honeymoon 611 6

BINGO!

I love, love, love playing Bingo on cruises. I never play it any other time but there is just something about being on a cruise ship and playing Bingo that makes my soul happy. I’m ashamed to admit that we wasted a pretty ridiculous amount of money playing Bingo over the course of the week. But it was all worth it to me, and I’m lucky enough to have a sweet husband who indulges me in my crazy whims.

The next day was our second port of call: Belize!

In Belize we had another pretty exciting excursion planned…we went cave tubing! Before we actually got to the excursion, I had no idea what cave tubing would be. I’d read the description on our ticket, but it wasn’t exactly clear on what was going to happen, so I didn’t really know what to expect.

We took an hour-long drive to the area where we’d be tubing, which gave us a really awesome chance to see a lot of Belize and learn a little more about the culture. Then, when we got there, we got to don some more really silly looking gear. We couldn’t stop laughing at how both excursions we had been on so far had made us look and feel like complete idiots.

The Cardigan Honeymoon: Part 2 : wedding austin honeymoon 72 7

Once we had all our gear on, we set off on a twenty minute hike through a beautiful rainforest, until we reached the river that we’d be tubing in. We hopped in our tubes and got ready to go!

The Cardigan Honeymoon: Part 2 : wedding austin honeymoon 82 8

Oh look! A cave…and we’re in inner tubes. So THAT’S what they mean by cave tubing!

It was a lot more fun than I expected it to be. It was very relaxing to be floating in the river, and the caves we went through were beautiful. We didn’t get many pictures because, you know, it’s kind of dark in caves.

After we finished tubing we headed back and had another fun night on the ship. And this is where things went a bit off course.

You see, I don’t know if you know this, but January isn’t exactly prime cruising season. And the water was um…not calm. At all. The boat was pretty rocky for most of our trip, which didn’t really bother us at all—I don’t get seasick and Mr. Cardy is just fine as long as he has a patch on. So, up until this point the crazy water hadn’t really affected us at all. But the next morning, when we were supposed to be getting off the ship to go spend the day relaxing in our own private cabana on a beach in Roatan (!!!), we were informed that we wouldn’t be able to dock because of bad weather.

Boo!

In all honesty, we didn’t really mind too much. We got the money back from our excursion and we were still on a freaking cruise ship, so we could still enjoy ourselves. We were a bit disappointed but we didn’t waste any time in heading up to the deck and snagging a hammock to chill out in for the rest of the day.

The Cardigan Honeymoon: Part 2 : wedding austin honeymoon 92 9

I mean, really…how could I complain about not getting to stop in Roatan when I still got to lounge in a hammock with my shiny new husband and sip cocktails all day? Still sounds like a pretty freaking awesome day to me!

We spent the day relaxing and making fun of all the people who were so grumpy about the change in plans that it was ruining their whole vacation. We both had a hunch that the bad news wasn’t over, though, and we weren’t at all surprised when we were informed that evening that due to bad weather, our next port, Costa Maya, was closing down and we wouldn’t be able to dock there either. The captain informed us that we’d be going back to Cozumel instead so that we’d still have a chance to get off the ship.

It was really interesting to see how other people on the ship reacted to the change in plans. We overheard countless people grumbling and complaining about the bad weather (which, um, who can control that?!) and people sounded completely miserable! Not us, though. Mr. Cardy and I just took the changes as they came and chose to look on the bright side instead. We were still having a great time, and we ended up getting a ton of money back because of the excursions we had missed. PLUS we got a coupon for 20% off of our next cruise—score!

As I mentioned before, we aren’t huge fans of Cozumel (and the weather was less than ideal), so Mr. Cardy and I spent the next day relaxing again. Only, this time we stayed out of the sun because it had been very unkind to me the day before (boo, sunburns). Over the next two days (one day in Cozumel and then our last day at sea), Mr. Cardy and I took full advantage of our relaxation time. We lounged around in the room, took naps, and played lots of cards.

The Cardigan Honeymoon: Part 2 : wedding austin honeymoon 101 10

We also made sure to fill ourselves up as much as possible on the yummy cruise food. My favorite part? The chocolate buffet!

The Cardigan Honeymoon: Part 2 : wedding austin honeymoon 111 11

YUM!

The weather on the last two days wasn’t great at all. It was very windy and in the high sixties, so it definitely wasn’t really the best weather for lounging in the sun. We stayed inside for the most part, except on the last day. There was one last game of Bingo and it was out on the deck, so we grabbed some towels to wrap up in and braved the wind for one more game of Bingo!

And we may have snuggled a bit to keep warm…

The Cardigan Honeymoon: Part 2 : wedding austin honeymoon 122 12

And then, even though it felt like we had only been on the ship for five minutes, our week was up and it was time to get off.

BUT. We had one more day to spend in Florida and we spent it doing something very, very exciting. I loved our cruise, but this last day may have been my favorite part of the entire vacation.

What’d we do?

You’ll have to wait for the third (and final) installation of our honeymoon recaps to find out!

Are you the type of person to get upset when your vacation plans change, or do you just roll with it like Mr. Cardy and I did?

Need to catch up?

OMG! I actually had a panic attack when snorkeling. I couldn’t get the mask thing to fit correctly, and the people running the excursion kept telling me it was fine and I just needed to remember how to breathe. Every time I tried to figure out what I was doing, the flippers caused my face to plant back in the water. (I consider myself a decent swimmer, but not with flippers.) Finally, I got out of the water and eventually another person working the outing told me that they had put the mask together wrong and fixed it for me.

I’ve never heard anyone else say that they had a bad time snorkeling, so while I’m not happy that you had a bad experience your first 2 times, I am glad to know it is not just me.

Hey Mrs Cardigan - we played bingo on our cruise as well (we’re in our 30’s). LOVED every minute of it! Didn’t win, of course, but it was so much fun because of the way the cruise got people going. :)

i love cruises! i actually really loved cozumel but FI and I rented a jeep wrangler for 60 bucks when we got in port and drove all around the island and found some really pretty secluded beaches that had bars and hammocks. i think there were 1 or 2 other couples there. it was pretty amazing.

we are headed to jamaica for our honeymoon and it is FI’s dream to scuba dive - but i have a terrible fear of the ocean. i love to look at it, put my feet in it. ill even get on a boat but actually getting into the ocean scares the bananas out of me. snorkeling too. im going to cry! and i think sharks can smell fear.

It looks like you had so much fun (and made the best of the change in plans)! And, as for snorkeling…I’m with you 100%. We went and swam with the dolphins on our h-moon, and I honestly thought at one point I was going to die…because I indeed started having a panic attack. 98% of the dolphin swim was fantastic…but at one point the trainer handed out snorkel goggles and told us to put them on and put our faces in the water (ostensibly to see the dolphins under the water doing pirouettes). I started putting the goggles on and realized they covered up my nose and freaked. out. Coudln’t do it. The trainer was like “PUT THE MASK ON! LOOK AT THE DOLPHINS!” (kind of yelling at me) and I was like…eff that, I paid for this, I don’t have to do part of it if I don’t want to! Haha. Anyway. I’ve monopolized your comments section enough I think…but again, I’m with you on the snorkel masks. Scary stuff. ;)

What fun! Good on you for not letting the weather get you down- there’s nothing you can do about it, so why let it ruin the fun?? :)

I’m totally with you on the snorkeling thing. We went in Hawaii, and I FREAKED OUT! I couldn’t touch bottom, I couldn’t breath right in the thing, my flippers were too tight, it was awful. I had a panic attack! I was a trooper and went again the next day, but we rented new fins for me and a boogie board, so I could still put my face in the water, but I felt much more secure.

I ended up going boardless at a different location- the water looked shallow and was in a kind of cove protected from the ocean so I figured I’d suck it up. It got really deep, but I was relaxed going in to it so I kept going and ended up getting bumped by a ginormous turtle and having a great time! The things we do for the ones we love:)

We are going on a cruise too! I am glad to read your recaps because I was second guessing our decision. I know it is the correct one for us. Thanks.

Thanks for posting about your honeymoon. My fiance and I are going on a cruise too for our honey moon. Carnival Legend is where we will be for a week in the western carabean visiting Cozumel, Rotan, Belize and Grand Caymen.
I wasn’t sure about cave tubing until I saw your picture, very cool!
This will be our first cruise, do you have any tips?

We’re big cruisers, and love to play Bingo on them, as well! And I think a lot of people are just miserable in general, even on vacation! It seems like there is always someone bitching about something on them.

P.S. We just got back from a cruise vacation 2 weeks ago, and I will say you missed absolutely NOTHING in Costa Maya. I’d much rather just lay out on the boat with a drink in hand next to my hubby!

That cave tubing excursion looks awesome!! And I agree that the zip line is not what I would’ve expected either, I’ve done four different zip lines and they were all through the jungle…Oh well, next time!

The whole cruise looks ABSOLUTELY amazing! It is exactly what I hope it to be! When life hands you lemons - make lemonade, right? If things keep going wrong or not the way you planned or the weather doesn’t cooperate - you are still with your new hubby!!!! I love the positive attitude the both of you had! Your excursions looked like so much fun! Except the ziplining - my FI and I are both petrified of heights!

Someday, we must hang out. Mr. Tartlet *totally* got me into Bingo on our last cruise! I can’t snorkel for the same reasons as you. As soon as a wave goes over me I start flapping my arms in a panic, which just makes things 10x worse. Snuba diving is slightly better if you ever have the opportunity to try it out!

I believe we went on the same cruise! Not at the same time though. My hubby and I cruised on the Carnival Legend from October 17-24, 2010.

We stopped at Cozumel, Belize, Roatan, and Grant Cayman.

We did zip lining too but in Belize! And we did go through a forest, it was awesome and beautiful! It just wasn’t long enough. LOL

In Roatan we spent all day on the beach and then did our souvenier shopping. We had a torrential downpour as we were leaving but we did get to go.

In Grand Cayman we did a semi-sub tour. It was cool, the boat was mostly underwater where you could see everything!

We didn’t pack in as much as you guys did but we had a blast on our cruise! =)

I dislike snorkeling as well. No matter what the water conditions are I always end up with burning eyes and full of saltwater. I love scuba diving but if your problem is claustrophobia it might not solve much for you. Might be fun to try sometime though!

Love your attitude about the change in plans. I’d probably be bummed but forget about it quickly if the alternative was laying around in the sun with my new hubby (woe is me!).
