About Ms. Sloth

Here We Go Again

February 3rd, 2011 @ 4:22 pm by Ms. Sloth

I’ll be honest: I debated even writing this post, because I’m totally annoying myself with my wishy-washy indecisiveness. I thought to myself, “Do I want to put the hive through this again?” But I promised myself that when I started writing for Weddingbee I’d be as candid as possible, so here we go…

A few weeks ago, I was hanging up some clean laundry, and I decided to try on my wedding dress. It had been a while, and I wanted to see if it still fit or if it was too big.

Well, it was a bit too big, but nothing some alterations wouldn’t fix. It was a bit roomy and way too long. No biggie. But here’s the thing:

When I tried it on, I felt a great big MEH.

Yes, that’s right. After buying and returning two other dresses, this is dress #3. And I don’t think I like it anymore. I don’t hate it, mind you, and I still think that it will flatter my body, but I’m really starting to dislike the details at the top:

Aesthetically, it’s too sparkly for my taste. Practically, it’s kind of scratchy, especially under my arms. I’m just not crazy about it. If the dress didn’t have those 3-D floral details, I’d be thrilled with it, even though it would be really plain. I could just jazz it up with some kick-ass accessories. But as is? MEH.

For the past few weeks, I’ve been trying to convince myself that it’s okay if I don’t love my dress. And honestly, if I was down to the wire, if the wedding was next month, I’d probably be okay with it, since there’d be no time to change my mind.

But with three and a half months left, there’s still some time, and I’d never forgive myself if I didn’t at least try to find something better. Just to throw feelers out, I listed my dress on some used wedding dress sites and got a few responses already, so I don’t think I might be able to almost break even.

A few months ago, I fell head over heels for the Melissa Sweet Fiesole:

Hello, Lover!

It was way out of my budget, so I tried to push it out of my mind, but then I found a dress on the Limited website that reminded me of it. It’s hard to see in this photo, but it had similar horizontal detailing that I loved:

Armed with a 20% off coupon code and soon-to-expire gift card to cover part of the cost, I ordered the dress and tried it on. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out. It fit like a dream, but the bottom ruffle was too flouncy, making me feel like I was going to a square dance instead of getting married (I was a bad blogger and forgot to take photos). Back to the Limited it went.

But it seemed I was on to something. There’s no time to order a traditional dress from a traditional shop, but there are a handful of stores from which I can order an off-the-rack dress online, try it on, and return it if it doesn’t work out. Here are some more that I’m considering:

Another alternative is to order a fabulous retro-inspired dress from Dolly Couture. They’re not off-the-rack so I’d have to pay extra for a rush fee, but they do take returns, which is rare for a custom shop. I’m really smitten with their Lahaina, so maybe I’ll try this if none of the dresses above work out.

I know that the smartest thing to do is to just wear the dress I already have, especially since it’s really just fine. But I know me: I obsess, and I won’t be able to relax until I’ve exhausted all other options. If I try on a bunch of dresses and don’t find anything better, well, that’s okay. I’ll wear my David’s dress and ignore the sparkly, scratchy flowers. If I can find something quickly, I’ll sell my David’s dress at a small loss and everything will work out.

This is the last thing I need as we’re getting down to the wire with planning, but I think it’s something I have to do.

Did you have dress regret?

I think that if you dont love it then you should definitely see about other options! Isn’t that one of the things to getting married? Finding “THE DRESS”? I say if you have time and the resources, find another one.

I put a dress back just for that reason that it was scratchy under my arms. Not exactly something I want to deal with all night!

I had total dress regret! But, I came to the realization that the dress doesn’t make the wedding - it’s just a big accessory of the day. YOU make the dress ;-) I think the current dress is absolutely adorable - I love it on you.

Have you looked into removing the flowers or would the stitching leave little holes all over?

I think your dress is gorgeous and cute. I would stop shopping. I mean, this is dress #3? And you still don’t really like this one? There’s a pattern here, and it’s all about your pursuit of the a-ha moment or something. The dress may be the most obvious visual symbol of a wedding (other than the wedding bands, I guess), but it really is just a dress you wear for a few hours one time. In 5 years will you really remember why you were so dissatisfied with so many dresses? And to be really honest, most of the dresses you want to look at are very similar to what you already have. See what you can do about the detailing at the top to make it less fussy, but keep the dress .

I LOVE that dress!! (Number 3 you currently have). I am planning on trying it on so that might color my opinion. But I would agree, if you can remove some of the beads/flowers without leaving holes or anything would it help? Especially under the arms where it isn’t going to show anyway.

The Dolly Couture one is pretty, but could you just have your seamstress remove some detailing under the arm so it’s not so scratchy?

I really love your current dress (#3) and maybe that colors my perception, but I do wonder if you are starting to have unrealistic expectations. Which is understandable given how into fashion you are, but is also causing a lot of stress.

I would suggest taking your dress to a seamstress to see what you can do to tone down the sparkles. Maybe you can take them off and replace them with matte beading if it leaves holes or stitch marks. Add some reinforcement of the fabric to make the underarms more comfortable? I am totally not an expert, but that dress is GORGEOUS on you and the sparkles are barely visible once you get a couple feet away.

While I do think your dress is super cute, I couldn’t deal with the scratchiness. Mainly because if any type of material is rough on my skin, especially under my arms or on the chest area, and I rub or scratch my skin, it’ll turn into a red splotchy mess. So I say if you just feel “meh” about your dress, go find one that you adore and makes you happier than “meh”

I love Dolly Couture and if I ever get married again (I stalk WB because I’m a bridesmaid for my BFF in July) I’m totally wearing a Dolly!

Can you get a seamstress to remove the sparkly flowers and add the horizontal detail that you like?

I adore the dress that you already have, but what’s important is that you love it. You’re right, it sounds like if you don’t at least try to find something else, you’ll regret it. I looove Dolly dresses, they get my vote!

Whatever keeps your sanity!

If you think that shopping for another dress, waiting for it to come to your home, selling this one off, and getting the new one altered/personalized, finding accessories with that one on top of doing other wedding related activities will keep you sane rather than just going on with the one you have, then go for another dress.

But, if you are already overwhelmed with all the planning, save yourself some time and stress and be with the one that you have for it looks really pretty, soft, and feminine. It might be a matter of taste, but I dont find your current dress OTT or too sparkly. There is some shine on the top of dress but it is balaces very nicely with the soft, satiny, off white/cream color of the dress.

I love the dress you have, but if you don’t, no harm in shopping around if it’s something you can return. I would say though, that you need to stop looking at dresses after the next one. This is part of the reason why I was glad I only started looking with six months out, and ordered my dress three months out, and then had it altered. Even now I’m like, gosh I wish I had gotten a more glitzy/lacy/shorter/xyz dress…but in the end, I really liked my dress. And I’m sure you will too!

I adore the dress you already have on you. But I do agree that the Melissa Sweet Fiesole is beautiful. It was one of my favorites until my sweetie noticed it as one of my inspiration pictures and shot it down. Blah. But I do love the Unique Vintage dress. I think it would look pretty on you.

After I bought my dress, I had this happen. Around the 3-4 month mark, I decided I hated my dress for about a week, and thought about selling my dress. I didn’t do anything and a few days later I realized I was acting dumb and remembered WHY I bought my dress in the first place. I *do* love my dress but the longer I have to think about it, the more I second guess myself.

Here’s a little tough love: I would STOP looking for another dress. Stop looking on websites, don’t try things on, don’t order anything. It’s adorable, and it’s already your third dress. This might happen AGAIN and by that time you’ll be really close to your wedding and having to deal with the dress stress again. I would focus on loving YOUR dress and accessorizing it up to make it “you” (since you aren’t really “done up” in that photo”.

If it makes you feel any better, I tried on the Melissa Sweet Fiesole wanting to love it (I also loved the Fern) and it was suuuper unflattering. The woman helping me (Keisha at Kleinfelds) said that she won’t even pull it for brides unless they insist because the way the bow on the front hits just makes everyone she’s seen it in look weird. And for the record, I wore a bridal size 4 and have a fairly teeny waist and that dress made me look incredibly wide!
