Mrs. Giraffe's Picture
Mrs. Giraffe, Chicago Age and Occupation: 23, Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Music Student Teacher Engagement Date: October 23, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Trinity Lutheran Church & Idlewild Country Club About Me: Coming from the suburbs of the Windy City, you'll often find me with my foot in my mouth while laughing for no reason or telling bad knock knock jokes. I've been crafty for as long as I can remember, and will DIY something twice over before I have someone do it for me. I'm a semi-awkward, typeface obsessed, design junkie and have been know to break out my dance moves for no reason as well as try my best to be ridiculous at all times. My love of pop culture, wordplay, and graph paper almost rivals my love of Mr. Giraffe (who is just the bee's knees). After a 2.5 year engagement, we're planning a modern-in-disguise traditional wedding, and cannot wait!
About Mrs. Giraffe

Do you guys know what my favorite posts are to read? Maybe food or recaps? Possibly how to include your dog in your wedding? Nope, nope, and nope. See, those are all great kinds of posts, and I do enjoy reading them, but my absolutely favorite posts are invitation inspiration ones.

I know, I know, there have been a ton of these by very smart and awesome bees, but I cannot wait to share even more with you. I am so excited that I definitely have more than one post, but you’ll just have to wait for the rest.

Today, I’m sharing traditional invitation ideas with you. This is definitely more of Mr. G’s style and I think he wants us to lean this way. I mean, I suppose it makes sense; by all accounts we’re having a traditional wedding. I don’t know, though, but I feel like traditionally styled invitations get kind of a bad rap (at least they did in my mind). I mean, if they don’t have all the fancy glitter, embossing, and laser cuts, aren’t they just boring? Seriously? Or if not boring, aren’t they just like some super cheesy old-school things your mom and dad used in the ’60s?

Well yes… for some, I suppose, but I’m here to share some traditional invites with you that are just as lovely and beautifully as their hip and cool and/or pop and fresh counterparts.

Okay, so are they fresh? Not necessarily, but I still think they’re pretty and I can appreciate the beauty of their simplicity. The fourth one down is one Mr. G would really be in to, and I don’t think it’s all that bad. I mean, it might not have a metallic belly band, but it really is quite lovely and elegant.

Here are a few more to sway you to the traditional side.

So what do you think, hive? Did you send traditional invitations (and do you have photos to share with me)? If you were a Giraffe guest, would you be disappointed if you received a traditional-style  invite?

Honestly, I, as a guest just want the information I need to get to your wedding. While yes I want it to be visually appealing, and I will take the time to notice if it appears you spent a lot of time making the invite it is still just a piece of paper. I think “traditional” invites are perfectly lovely. I understand some people love to craft and make their invites incredible, personally, after the wedding I’m just going to trash it.

Maybe I’m weird, but I prefer classic traditional invitations!

I don’t consider myself traditional, but I still think these are all quite nice! Er, except the last one which looks like an invite to the Victoria’s Secret Semi-Annual Sale.

The last one reminds me of the tissue paper we used at Victoria’s Secret!

I like both traditional and modern. It kind of depends on the couple and their style. Truthfully as long as people get the info that is the most important part! I’m sure you guys will be able to find a compromise

I’m not American and where I live most of the invitations are tradicional, sometimes the envelope is a somehow modern, or there’s a bow or a crystal, but nothing like you guys do, all colorfull and creative.
I like tradicional and that’s what I’m doing, but I adore to see how the invites can show the couple personality.

I can get into a traditional invite with a slight modern twist—the first four of these feel that way to me–classic. The rest of them, though, feel a bit dated. More like 90’s style. Might just be me…

I agree with Melissa, the first 3 invites are classic, can be used in any time or location, but the last few are a little era centric - 90’s style.

I think the last picture you have really brings the traditional into today. The traditional layout, with the pop of color blends the two styles beautifully.

I wouldn’t mind getting these invitations in the mail! Always loved traditional ones, though I’m a big fan of the more creative, modern invites as well. These types of invitations always seem so elegant and regal. Thanks!

I am in my 20s, live in NYC and had super traditional, cream invitations. The font was black and they were letterpress. I wouldn’t have anything differently - I am not a fan of the trendy invites. I wanted every aspect of my wedding to be timeless, classic and elegant.

I really love traditional invitations. I think there is something to be said about classic, clean and simple paper. Ours will be traditional, with just a slight pop of color… I don’t have photos for you :( but I’m so excited about them!

I really do not like what is now deemed “traditional.” When first looking over invitations for reference such as what should they say, how should they look, what sizes and colors, etc etc. I found them all to be cookie cutter, and would never express us as a couple or give a hint to the theme and style of our wedding. In short, I ventured away from the reference you have shown above, and started to reference places like Studio on Fire (http://www.studioonfire.com/category/letterpress-printing/wedding/) and their letterpress invitations. (I personally see the one example Brue as being traditional.)

Being a designer myself, I quickly started to sketch out numerous styles, did thousands of typeface studies (I already have over 25K fonts stored on my computers) and nothing. Eventually this lead me to searching for new typefaces, one that would embody our theme and style, but most importantly showcase us and give a hint towards the wedding. So a big thanks to Veer and their typeface Phaeton (http://marketplace.veer.com/type/umt0000447).

I don’t have any printed out as of now, currently finishing up the menu tasting and selections and then its off to my favorite letterpress. But in case your curious and wonder why a typeface like Phaeton, we are outdoors people, and our wedding theme (rustic nature) resembles the same day he proposed, outside overlooking a lake at sunset.

I like the striped vellum in the last photo, but I do find the others a little plain. After browsing invites on Etsy, there was no question that we’d go for something quirky and very ‘us’ when time came to find our invites. ;)

I think there’s no problem with traditional invites. That’s what we’re doing! But they’re a slight twist. We just got the sample in the mail and I LOVE them. You should check out the seller: http://www.etsy.com/shop/EllasPaper?ref=pr_shop_more. And yeah…I obsess over invitations. I love paper. I know that’s weird, but I do. So I love invitations!

There is definitely a certain kind of elegance to traditional invitations, but… I have a feeling there are more invitation inspirations coming, am I right?
