Tablescapes Part 2: The Linens

February 3rd, 2011 @ 2:44 pm by Mrs. Biscuit

OK, so you’ve seen my idea for a centerpiece, but you had to realize I wasn’t going to let a “Mad Hatter tea party” table be that simple. Remember, I want this wedding to be a whimsical acid trip.

An abstract vision of my wedding

If you remember way back when, I had this lofty goal for my place cards. If not, here’s the Reader’s Digest version: I wanted to color code each table by fabric and give guests little flags made out of said fabrics to denote which table they were to sit at. Well, reality set in, and I realized a few things:

  1. I’m not that crazy about table runners on round tables, and those are what my venue provides.
  2. Forty or more fabrics may be difficult to differentiate, especially in low lighting.
  3. Flags don’t really fit with my theme.
  4. I like to make things harder for myself.

So, how could I make my table linens even more elaborate? Easy! I would make napkins in coordinating fabrics by table. That’s right: 300 napkins. I can do it…with a little help from crafty family members and BM C. I’ll also have a table square that the tea cup and milk glass will sit on to tie the table together.

Here’s an idea of some of the fabrics I bought:

I realize that they don’t perfectly match, but I think they still go together and work with my mismatched theme. I’m hoping that these fabrics tone the ballroom down and make it more “garden-y.” Yeah, I know that’s not a word.

I’m still looking for ideas for napkin rings, though this is my current inspiration:

I’d want to fold the napkin so I could slide a menu inside. The color of tissue paper I would use would vary depending on the fabric at each table.

Are you attempting to sew your own linens? Are you also trying to take the mismatched approach?

Stay tuned for part 3: place cards!

Whimsical acid trip is the best.theme.ever.

I can’t wait to see your whole vision come together- especially if you incorporate your awesome drawings in somehow. :)

Hee. I did the exact same thing — 1 napkin fabric per table. Worked out splendidly. Good luck!

OOOH, see, you can totally do the same table numbers as me, because I’m making tissue paper flowers, too! We’ll just have twin weddings, it’ll be totally cool! :)

Going with something very similar to this, though I plan on using Paper Source’s paper flower kit to make my napkin rings. Good luck!

I am also making my own napkins, about 30% done so far. i am just using a linen type material though and screenprinting on them with my gocco. I am also doing mitered corners, yes i may be crazy… but they are adorable so far!

After seeing the rental cost of linens I think i am just going to make my own muslin tablecloths as well, it will end up costing me less than half of what it would take to rent them! Plus i’m a sewer and can totally use the muslin again on other projects.
