Sadness

February 4th, 2011 @ 9:40 am by Mrs. Biscuit

I interrupt my scheduled decor posts with an outpouring of emotion.

Today, as I was browsing through my favorite indie dress website, I found this dress:

Sadness : wedding dress morgantown 23699 1 23699-1

Then I repeatedly hit my head on the coffee table while wishing I had seen this dress before I had found my bridesmaids’ dresses.

For a fleeting moment, I considered buying seven of these and gifting them to my girls. I hoped that they would think, “Two dresses for the price of one?! Sweet!” Then I considered how absolutely ridiculous that was and decided that I’d just try to avoid ModCloth until that dress was off of the first page. Or sold out.

I will continue rationalizing the situation by realizing that this dress is $25 more expensive than the other dress. It would also not be as forgiving if one of my BMs gained a bit of weight or got pregnant. It’s less re-wearable. It may look cheap in real life. It may photograph white. It may be hoochie-mama short. Oh, and there are people dying in Africa right now. And sad puppies in those Sarah McLachlan commercials.

And that’s it. I have mourned the gorgeous apparel, and now I will just cry about sad puppies and people in third-world countries while feeling selfish that I let this dress saga rival these problems in my mind. Le sigh.

Anyone else think of the sad puppies on that super depressing commercial when wedding details turn you into a selfish, self-absorbed person?

Sad puppy commercials make me cry, but your drawings make me smile, so I feel balanced.

Darn you, McLachlan, and your hauntingly sad song. Sad puppies are my kryptonite!

Your drawings are highly entertaining. Also, that dress is lovely, but you’re right - you made the best choice the first time!

P.S. I’m really happy that you’re blogging, but wish you’d come sooner as we planned a wedding in Lansing, WV. Would’ve loved reading more, if that’s possible, had you been planning with me. The drawings and your theme really make it hard to love reading you more.

Those puppies and Sara McLachlan get me EVERY time! But that dress is super cute! Could you wear it to your rehearsal? Or shower? Or better yet, your bachelorette party?

Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve never heard of modcloth, but their stuff is great!

Is a lot of their stuff kinda cheap-ish when you see it in person? and are they kind of junior sized? Just wondering for ordering guidance! i am goign to order some to try for my bridal shower!

Also, can you link to the dress you did pick for your bmaids? I can’t remember it although i know i saw it!

I second all of Kate’s questions! I’ve been tempted to buy dresses from Mod Cloth, but wasn’t sure about quality/fit.

Your doodles crack me up! Love them! Why not buy the dress just for yourself for some pre-wedding event like the rehearsal dinner? Just a thought!

While that dress is totally adorable, I think you made the right choice with your BM dresses. I’m with Miss Brooch, maybe you can get one for a bridal shower or rehearsal dinner for yourself? BTW, I’m a total crier, so I totally have to fast forward through those sad puppy commercials or leave the room…

In my experience, ModCloth dresses almost always look cheaper in person, and tend to be WAY short. I am a fairly slim 20-something but I’ve had to send things back to ModCloth more than once due to surprisingly high hemlines.

I know how you can feel better about it - wait until there are some reviews on the dress TELLING you that it looks cheap in real life and is hoochie mama short to boot. I love modcloth designs but their clothes are not really worth the $ as far as wearability goes. Also, seven girls - there’s got to be a lot of variation in body type, right?! I’m a 32DD and I’m telling you right now that dress would look awful on me, even though I think it’s theoretically adorable.

@Caitlin: I’m always very careful to look at the measurements of dresses. I’m only 5′5″, so most things are fine on me. I’ve never thought any of the dresses I got looked cheap, per se. I online shop quite a bit though, so I’ve gotten very good at picking out what will look right on me, and what things probably don’t look like as nice as their photographs. I steer away from most synthetics. Cotton is generally a safe bet.

@kate: & @Mia: I think their stuff is fine. If there are any comments, check them out beforehand. I’ve never had anything fall apart on me from ModCloth (though a dress from Anthropologie just fell apart completely on me the other day, after having never worn it). Every dress is different, and they all are different brands, so the fit is different. They take all the measurements with the garments lying flat. If you can, find a dress that fits you well in a similar style (if the waist is high and broad, find a similar dress if you have one) and measure that dress lying flat. You’ll be fine if you do that. Also, ModCloth has a great free return policy that I have used more than once. The styles sell out lightning fast though. shopruche.com is another great store. Their styles sometimes overlap with ModCloth’s and are cheaper.

@Miss Lupine: Most of my girls are about the same size. A few of them are super tiny and don’t even fit into traditional Misses sizing. We already have dresses from ModCloth and they look good on everyone. We tried a few styles first, though.

Sure, it looks good there but you never know what it will look like on. To me that dress also looks very short.

Oh I LOVE your BM dresses. And the reviews on the other dress don’t look great…..

On the puppy note…every time that ad comes on, I tear up, and find my puppy and just hug him and promise him that he’ll never have to go back to a terrible place like that :( He’s our little rescue baby. Damn you Sarah, going and making me cry every time. I wish I could save them all!

I think your original choice of BM dresses are lovely! These are cute, but I think your first choice was spot on.
