Major Must-Have: Rings With Personality

February 4th, 2011 @ 10:07 am by Mrs. Jam

To say I’m a little bit gypsy when it comes to rings may be an understatement. Each ring-a-ding-ding says a little something different: two are antique turquoise from my fabulous grandma’s killer jewelry collection; one is a band Mr. Jam found and wore as a faux-wedding ring this Halloween when he dressed up as the newlywed Russell Brand (yes, I was his Katy Perry); one is obviously our engagement ring, which I big-time heart; and one was $1 at a dollar store and turns my finger green when I sleep in it.

When I’m feeling especially fierce, I find room for a thick spoon ring Mr. Jam made for me at an annual Sweet Corn Festival near our hometowns. That’s six rings total. Every single day. How the hell was I going to find empty real estate for a wedding band?

Be honest: Is Jewel’s song Hands in your head right now?!

Jewelry is one of my passions, and I tend to gravitate to anything that can be described using the words Statement, Kitschy and HolyOMG. (Yes, my wedding jewelry can definitely be described as holyOMG. More on that later.) So finding a wedding band that looked a smidgen offbeat and still could blend in with my other everyday rings has been the task at hand for the last few months.

And lucky for me, one just about jumped in front of my unsuspecting face at the IndieWed bridal show in Chicago last weekend.

DROOL. My thin, hand-braided wedding band, only in silver. At $140, it could be considered a bit of a budget-buster (well, for our budget, anyway), but we decided to forgo Christmas presents to each other this year and instead do the ring thing. It turned out to be a pretty wise decision, because this is more than we wanted to spend on just one band.

But I tell you what, when I saw this ring at IndieWed, I shoved it down onto my finger and hoped it wouldn’t be able to come off…that’s how much I love it. Plus, it looked pretty darn perfect with my other daily baubles, so we’ll chalk that up to a match made in glittery, jewelry heaven.

Mr. Jam, on the other hand, is a bit different. He covers both wrists with prettythings and has never worn a ring on a regular basis.

Mr. Jam’s manly (and accessorized) wrists.

He also loves nature and hunting and sitting in a tree wearing camouflage. What better ring for him to wear than one with wood inlays?! Every time he looks down at it, he can imagine he’s hanging out in the woods waiting for a deer to come along. (Yes, I think he’s a bit crazy for loving hunting, but he thinks I’m a bit crazy sometimes, too. We don’t judge.)

Good news: He loves it and can’t wait to wear it. Even better news: It’s around $50, and super budget-friendly. Could it be any more perfect for that guy, seriously?!

So tell me, Hive: Did you choose rings based on stuff you liked, your personalities, or jewelry you already wore on a daily basis? Were you stressed out about cramming even one more ring onto your hands, or have you been reserving that real estate for years?

And really…aren’t you so flipping antsy to put that ring on for good at the ceremony?

I love both of your rings. But I have to say I really love his with the wood inlays; it is very unique. Great job find rings that are so “you” for both of you.

We are going ring shopping this weekend. Surprisingly he knows exactly the kind of ring he wants down to the stone and metal… While I am clueless because I am easily distracted and everything always sparkles when you go in the jewelry store… :-)

Your rings are superawesome. I have an antique turquois one that is REALLY similar to the one on your hand in the picture on the right. It was my grandma’s too, and I love it!

Your fiance’s ring is AWESOME. My dad is a hunter/fisherman/outdoorsman and he NEVER wears his wedding band. I bet if he had one like that, he would!

I chose my wedding band to complement my engagement ring. Well, actually, because my fiance had my engagement ring custom made, we had two options for wedding bands that “go with” the engagement ring, and I fell in love with one of them. I can’t waaaaiiiit to put it on for good!!

My fiance still hasn’t chosen a ring, but he doesn’t wear ANY jewelry, EVER, so when we tried on wedding bands, he really liked super-simple brushed silver.

Love your rings! My wedding band will be my late grandmother’s. It’s beautiful, delicate, perfect for my style, comes with a lovely history, and I’m making my mom keep it at her house until the wedding because otherwise I would be wearing it around the house every single day. :P

Thank you for sharing this etsy seller! My FI never wears jewelry. He mentioned that he probably wouldn’t wear the wedding band after the wedding….which was followed by a big “SAY WHAT!??!” from me. He thinks jewelry looks weird on guys and his parents don’t wear their wedding bands–not even his mom! I’m sending these to him. Hopefully it will change his mind. :)

@mrsbowieii: I know that feeling well! Jewelry stores can be a dangerous place for gals like us ; ) Have fun shopping!
@tntrav44: You’re rocking antique turquoise AND a custom e-ring? You sound like a lady after my own heart! And it sounds like Mr. Jam and your dear ol’ dad would have lots in common…you know how those outdoorsmen can be : )
@rachgirl82,@Miss Brooch & @Lizziemom: You guys are way too sweet, thank you!
@mightywombat: LOVE THIS. Love, love, love the history and the sentiment. And I’m the same way…if my ring was here, I would be wearing it already; it’s entirely too tempting!

@jerkamuffin: I have the perfect solution: Tell your FI that if he chooses to not wear a wedding band, you will invest in a tattoo machine and tattoo his left ring finger yourself! It will scare him straight, I’m sure ; )

Are you going to be wearing your wedding band on the same finger as your e-ring?? I love the eclectic jewelry you’re rockin’! You are so stylin’ and fabulous!

I’m also a multi ring wearer, currently only 3, as I had to do some rearranging. FI requested that I keep my left hand free to let my E-ring, and future wedding ring, anniversary rings, childrens birthstone rings etc. shine. So I have to resize some to go on my right hand. Love them though, they are so unique.
