Tiny Little Paper Balls

February 4th, 2011 @ 3:38 pm by Mrs. Lox

(It totally sounds dirty to me, too.)

The good news about having ongoing wedding DIY projects is that I can talk about what we’re doing even when we’re very busy not doing it! Hooray all around, right? Right.

So back in early January, I talked about these cute little paper balls that I’ve been working on. It’s been awhile…go ahead and look. I’ll wait.

Back now? Good. So Mr. Lox and I loved them. And I immediately thought of making garlands of them and putting little LED lights inside of them to make them glow. That was back when our wedding was going to be inside a restaurant. Now the wedding is going to be outdoors on a Sunday afternoon. So what does that mean? It means I can still have my garlands, but I can save money by not putting the lights in them! Win!

So let’s see what I’ve done so far. Here is a tiny sample of some of the little paper balls I’ve made.

I mean, come on, how cute are these?

Then I realized I had two problems. First of all they take up a lot of space, and I need literally hundreds of these. Second, they are paper. Which means unless they’re stored carefully they will crush up and be useless. What on Earth was I going to do?

(This is the part where you refrain from telling me that the tutorial I used totally tells you how to store and even ship them. Instead, you need to pretend I came up with this next idea all on my own.) Suddenly, I knew exactly what to do! Just don’t fluff them into little balls! Which leaves me with very storage-friendly final products.

This is but a tiny selection of the paper I used. Who knew these could turn into adorable little teeny lantern things?

Now I have made about 130 of these things. Since August. Yep, that’s just the kind of slacker I am. I have no clue how many I need, but I think it’s way more than 130. I intend to line the inside of the pavilion where our reception is being held with garlands of these little guys. So I’m thinking…yeah, a ton more. Anyone want to come over and make tiny paper balls with me?

This is what roughly 130 of them look like in a plastic freezer bag.

Did you have any projects that ended up being much larger than you had originally thought?

Yes! As matter of fact, my Tears of Joy packets are taking WAY more time and WAY more money than I thought. But your paper balls are CUTE!!! As an “outsider” to this project, I will tell you - it looks like it will be worth it!

Your balls are lovely! (that sounds dirty too) I am making tissue poms for my wedding and they are consuming me. There will be 20 down my aisle plus another 90 - yes, that’s right- for my centerpieces. Because they take so much time I am starting the process now, 8 months out. Currently I am in the cutting the tissue paper phase…it’s a real blast. ;) I took the project on knowing they are very time consuming, but didn’t really think about how they will have to be stored once assembled. Thank goodness my parents have a few spare closets.

How long does it take you to fan each one out?

What a great way to store them. I had been thinking of making them for a baby shower I’m hosting but didn’t want to figure out storage for them. I’m all over this now!!!

Also, if I was anywhere near Baltimore, I would totally help you make them!

These really are turning out fantastic! I wonder if you could do the same thing on larger scale? Instead of the Chinese paper lanterns?

@TheFutureMcBride: *snickers* Yes, I’m 12.

Lox, they are adorable but OY, they would drive me insane. I’m yet to even start on ANY of my wannabe DIY projects yet. ;)

Wow… that’s commitment. I personally can’t do things that tedious, but I’m sure they will look AWESOME!

@TheFutureMcBride: *snort* I kinda love you for that. ;)

@LoriKay628: Thanks so much for the validation! That means a lot.

@Ms October: If you have spare closet space at hand, may I recommend hanging them? You can fit four of them nicely on a plain wire hanger from the dry cleaners.

@peachplum09: It take about a minute or two to fan them out. I’m pretending that isn’t going to be a giant pain in the butt in May. ;)

@glamfish500: I totally appreciate the thought anyway! ;)

@Sunlavender: I think they could be scaled up but the larger they get, the more fragile (and harder to work with) they would be.

@raevnn: I am using 12×12 patterned paper from Michaels and Hobby Lobby. I found a few stacks that work with our colors and got them on sale.

ZOMG so cute! I had to try rigging a few of these up with the scrapbooking paper I’ve had hanging around forever. I think you may have inspired a third wedding to have these guys!
