Mrs. Pancakes's Picture
Mrs. Pancakes, New York/Costa Rica Age and Occupation: 26, Law School Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Latin American Policy Analyst Engagement Date: March 12, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Casa Punto de Vista About Me: I’m a perfectionist with a big heart. I love a good laugh and firmly believe no one has ever regretted being prepared! My motto is “go big or go home.” I am incapable of doing anything in moderation, especially when it comes to shopping, TV, food and travel, and some would say wedding planning! The other half of this nearlywed team is a laid-back, adventure-loving, accident prone, sweetie from LA. He makes me laugh, is always down for an impromptu dance party, and totally indulges most of my hare-brained schemes. Now, in my final year of law school, we’ll be spending the spring abroad in Amsterdam and planning a DIY, whimsical, detail-filled destination wedding in Costa Rica!

Workout-Plan Update

February 5th, 2011 @ 4:00 pm by Mrs. Pancakes

In June, I got a Groupon for a 30-day pass at Bikram Yoga Harlem and, after months of procrastinating, finally got myself up there! It was A-mazing! Especially after two years of an unbelievably sedentary lifestyle (like, literally 20 hours a day sitting or lying in bed!).

Workout-Plan Update : wedding costa rica fitness Yoga

{Source}

In the 30 days, I took 17 classes and truly fell in LOVE with Bikram. For all of you that don’t know, Bikram classes run exactly 90 minutes and consist of a set series of 26 postures and two breathing exercises. Bikram yoga is practiced in a room heated to 105°F with a humidity of 40 percent.

Unfortunately I can’t stay at Bikram Yoga Harlem because the studio is WAY too expensive for me (like $150 a month), but I still have months until the wedding, so I am not sure what I am going to do!!

That being said, I wonder why I didn’t budget my own health into my wedding budget. I budgeted skin care, jewelry, and even new undergarments, but I didn’t even think to budget a gym membership or even a yoga DVD!!

This last weekend, I finally sat down and decided on a firm budget. Until now we have been working with very vague estimates because I had a really hard time understanding how much things should cost and how much I was willing to spend. Now that we’ve secured a few of the more important (expensive) items (location, dress, suit, wedding planner, and photographer), it was much easier to get an idea of how much money we had left to play with and how we wanted to distribute that money. I think it’s REALLY important to revisit your budget, and not just to ADD to the budget but also to make adjustments as necessary! (And it WILL be necessary.)

I also created this matrix to help me think about all the various wedding-related expenses:

Workout-Plan Update : wedding costa rica fitness Matrix

The idea is that things that are the most important to us as a couple and those that will last the longest deserve the most attention (AKA largest percentage of the budget). On the other hand, for those things that we don’t care about and that won’t really have a lasting impact, we should consider spending little to no money on.

So all the items that fall in the upper right quadrant are those things that we are willing to really splurge on, those in the upper left and lower right are the items that we want but shouldn’t blow the bank to get, and last but not least are the items in the lower left. These are items that we really shouldn’t bend over backwards to get and perhaps could even live without. (Shocking, I know, but there ARE things that we may not need!)

So my preliminary matrix would look something like this:

Workout-Plan Update : wedding costa rica fitness Mymatr

Now there are two caveats:

1. I really have to be honest with myself about how important each detail is to us as a couple. It’s important to think of things on a sliding scale and not just as important and unimportant.

2. It doesn’t actually help us figure out how much we should spend on each item; it just helps us think about what percentage of the total budget we are willing to spend on each item.

So I guess the question still stands: Where would health/exercise fall? Somewhere in the lower right quadrant?? Perhaps even the upper right??

Does anyone have any advice regarding good workout DVDs or free resources online?

What a great system! And really, this is applicable to so much more beyond the wedding, it’s a great way to think about budgeting time, energy, money, in general!

Neat way to categorize everything! We’re about two months out from the wedding and I definitely hear you on revisiting the budget. It’s easy to spend a lot of money on little things (like favors) near the end. If you have Netflix there are some workout videos (even yoga) online on instant play. Not always the greatest videos, but hey they’re free, right?

I bought the Yoga by Bethney DVD and was quite shocked with how much t kicked my butt. There is also Yoga by the people on St Mark’s that has free classes. I did the same thing, but I left out skincare…yikes. Good luck!!!

30 Day Shred! It’s only $10 on Amazon, takes up so little time, and it WORKS.

My vote is Upper Right. Your health is personally important and has a long lasting effect :) I love Bikram but also balk at the prices, so my plan is to hop from studio to studio and try out their newbie rates (usually $29 for 30 days) before running out of options and picking a studio.

I am a huge fan of Kettlebells! They are the hardest workout I have ever done in my life. I got the dvd Kettlebell bootcamp and it has worked wonders so far…http://www.amazon.com/Power-Body-Kettlebell-Bootcamp-Miller/dp/B001GIJRP4

I put exercise on our wedding budget, originally it was a gym but when we moved back to the rural countryside this past may that no longer was an option. So we got EA sports active 2 and Zumba for the Wii. While they aren’t as great as a gym, they sure work and we even saved a lot by getting them instead of monthly membership fee’s. Since we were really out of shape when we got engaged, putting exercise into the budget was very important to us.

Harlem, NY? Have you considers Yoga for the People? It’s free (they accept donations only) and they have numerous times that you can go, too…. at least they did when I lived there (until early 2010). Great way to incorporate it into your budget, but what’s better that free?!

our wedding is in april and it just hit us that we should probably be eating better and working out. can’t see ourselves going out and getting gym memberships, especially with all the snow we’ve been getting, so we got the active 2 for wii (which we already had). my fiance tried it the other day and it actually gives you a pretty good workout. plus, it was only $40 on amazon.

Yay a Harlem bee! I also live in Harlem while I finish my doctorate. Does your school have a gym and do they offer classes? Our classes are like $60 a semester. I’ve taken Zumba twice and loved it!

I think on netflix you can stream workout videos if you have the instant watch thingy. Libraries also have them, but a lot of times they’re super outdated, which is HILARIOUS to watch. Snap fitness is dirt cheap if you go enough times / month for your ins. to chip in.
I don’t know where you live, but honestly, use the outside as your gym. Go for walks, jogs, bike rides, hell, I live in MN and I snowshoe once a week at least, even when it’s butt cold outside. And you should for sure budget at least as much as you spend on undergarmets, they’ll look better if you look better :)

I’m a huge fan of running and kickboxing. Running is awesome because you can do it anywhere, but it is pretty cold right now, so the clothes would be an investment. P90X has both a yoga and kickboxing element to it, but the videos are looooonnnnnnggggg. I’m a fan of watching 10 minute solutions on Netflix Instant Queue when I don’t have much time.

Like panther, I bought the 30 day shred as well as the Biggest Loser Cardio Max to use when I don’t feel like going to the gym. They definitely get my heart rate up, and I’m conditioned to run 7+ miles a day. My body is definitely not used to any sort of strength training haha.

My vote is for 30 Day Shred or some other interval workout system. I swear by intense interval workouts, especially bootcamps (if you can find a class near you but they are pretty expensive, like bikram). I also absolutely LOVE Chalean Extreme which is a women’s version of P90X.

I buy all my workout DVD’s at Half-Priced Books (or other used books/multi-media stores). I’ve found some awesome ones for as little as $5… but sometimes you end up with an awful one (but at least you’re not out a bunch of money).

I use one for a couple weeks, and as soon as I start to lose interest, I buy and new one and rotate through them.

Yoga to the People just opened a Bikram studio that has classes for about $8 a class. Their Vinyasa at St. Mark’s place is wonderful too, and its so warm/full of so many people it’s like doing hot yoga! http://www.yogatothepeople.com

I absolutely love this yoga instructor on YouTube. I have her DVD and it is quite challenging! However, she does have a Youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/sadienardini

She’s AMAZING and FREE!
