Let’s Talk About Hair, Baby

February 6th, 2011 @ 11:15 am by Mrs. Lox

Yep, it’s time to get real here. Let’s talk about hair.

By this point, I have shared more than a few pictures of me with all of you. From them you can see that I have medium to longish straight red hair. What you can’t see is that the only part of that description that is actually mine in nature is the length. And I’ve been growing it out for an insane amount of time. The rest of it? I either pay for or work quite hard for. In the case of the color, I know to leave it to the professionals. However, I have spent 33 years learning how to make my hair straight. Unfortunately, the fact you might believe it’s straight at all is just that experience tricking your eyes.

You might remember my hair looking like this:

Let’s Talk About Hair, Baby : wedding baltimore hair Lox19 lox1

OK, so it’s not perfectly straight because this was taken in the summer. But it is fairly straight here, right? (PS: It’s well past my shoulders in the back. Those are my shorter layers curling up around my shoulders in this picture.)

Yep, that was a pretty good hair day. Unfortunately, my hair actually looks more like this:

Let’s Talk About Hair, Baby : wedding baltimore hair Lox24 lox2

I let my hairdresser take a break and not straighten my hair today.

Right, so first I have to say I am rockin’ some awesome flannel jammies on a Friday night. Yep, that’s just how I roll.

Now back to the hair. That is not some super secret feat of styling. Neither is it crazy magic product. No, no. My hair is just really that curly. The only part you may credit to my stylist’s hard work is the awesome shade of red. (Which is rather unclear in these pictures. Trust me—it’s hot.) For the record, while the curl is all mine, the color is naturally blonde. But you already knew that.

What does my insane (and slightly less than attractive) curly hair have to do with my wedding? Oh come on, how could it not have anything to do with it? This nonsense has to be professionally styled for the day! Before today, I had let my stylist convince me that the kind of hairstyle I want was best achieved by leaving my hair in its natural state and going from there. Until today, when I let her remind me exactly how much I HATE my curls. Now I realize I have to go back to square one. This is seriously not going to work for me. At all.

For the record, I asked Mr. Lox if he liked my hair curly. He made a very sad face (because he is not the type to criticize my appearance at all) and shook his head.

So I’m going to need help with my wedding-day hair. We can talk about what I thought I wanted when we next meet. And by that I mean in my next post.

Is your hair all natural, or do you fight with nature? How does that affect your wedding-day-hair choices?

My hair is curly/wavy - not nearly as tight as your curls (which I think are cute - but if you don’t like ‘em, don’t have ‘em on your wedding day!). I sometimes blow dry my hair straight, but it’s quite thick, and I never have the patience to get it perfectly smooth and shiny. I also sometimes dry it with a diffuser so that it’s curly/wavy. Whether it looks good, or just frizzy/messy, seems to be largely up to the whims of fate and the weather that day. I can do exactly the same thing two days in a row, and have it turn out magazine-worthy the first day and looking like a bird’s nest the second. C’est la vie.

But I don’t know what I’m going to do with it for the wedding day. I’m leaning toward a low, messy chignon, but I also like the idea of a half-updo with waves. But…I’m getting married in late June, and I’m afraid the heat and humidity would wreck that look in a hot minute. (pun intended)

My hair was/is naturally curly like yours. I used to have people ask me every day how many perms I’d gotten, or how I got it to look that way. Well…I was born that way. When I was younger I had my hair chemically straightened. While straight haired people are always shocked by that because they would kill for curly hair like ours, it was the only way I could tame my hair enough to remotely like it. After 8 or so years of having my hair chemically straightened (professionally!) once a year, as well as a few times a week of blow drying my hair and ironing it with a Chi, my hair has actually lost some of its natural curl and I can easily make it look straight and smooth. I will most likely be wearing it that way or with more refined curls on my wedding day.

I’m jealous you have such great curly hair. Mine is crazy thick, coarse,, and has a slight wave which just makes it look like I don’t brush my hair. Oh, and I found my first gray hair the other evening. Ugh.

Oh the “joy” of curly hair. I too have been blessed/cursed with having corkscrew curly hair. I straighten mine maybe once a week, doesn’t take nearly as long as it used to as I think my hair has changed over the years and relaxed a bit.

As for wedding day, I, somewhat purposely picked a date that is outside of Massachusetts humid-weather time frame so no matter what style, I hopefully won’t have to worry about it not cooperating. My brother married on a humid, rainy Friday in June a few years ago and my hair was professionally curled and pinned and hairsprayed to a hard shell so the weather wasn’t an issue, but I don’t want to take that chance.

I’ve stopped coloring my hair really outside my normal zone so that I can let my hair recover and be healthier for the big day.

I always wanted curly hair, but mine just doesn’t want to stay in that state :( I was blessed/cursed with fine hair, but TONS of it. So I have this weird fake thickness that falls out of everything and does some sort of weird wave like Miss Biscuit.

I am in the same boat -when my hair isn’t pulled back, it’s me & the CHI. The weird thing is my bangs and the top of my hair are straight-about a 1/4 of the way down, the curls start. I decided to work w/ what I had -I had my stylist re-curl my hair for our wedding as it was warm & humid. I would have worn it up, not straight otherwise. We always want what we don’t have -if I wear my hair curly, everyone comments on how they wish they had curls. Ha!

@Miss Biscuit: FIRST?! I have a million -I finally gave up on coloring it, but about a dozen people a day (including my 5th & 6th graders) think it’s appropriate the comment on my gray hair. Nice.

I’m saddened by the lack of curl love here, but definitely do what makes YOU happy. I have naturally dark curly hair much like you, and I love it. It took many years to understand how to care for it (my mom is a straight haired blonde), but I’ve got it down now. I haven’t decided yet if I’m going to let a professional do my hair because with curly hair I find I can do it better myself. Haven’t found a professional stylist that really “gets” white girl curly hair yet. In any case, I’ll definitely be rockin my curls whether or not I have to do it myself.

I have curly hair too. And while my friends have been jealous for years, I’ve never seen it that way. I’ve always been jealous of my friends who don’t have to spend an hour in the hot bathroom blowdrying and torturing their hair. My mom has short hair, so she’s the poodle, and I have long hair, so mine looks more like a cocker spaniel, lol.

I know you probably over read Miss Jams post on curly/natural wedding day hair styles. But in case you haven’t heard curly hair rocks, but your fiancee likes it straight. Whatever you decide it will be awesome.

I have naturally curly hair, and I wear it like that 95% of the time. Yeah it’s fun to straighten it, and I’m always excited with how long it is. But curly hair is most ME, and I like wearing it like that. I’ll be wearing my hair up, but with my natural curls providing texture, which I’m pretty excited about. However, do what makes you happy, and I’m sure you’ll find a look you love!

@MsATC: And oh, I totally agree with professionals just not “getting” my hair texture. My sister/MOH is going to help me style my hair for the big day, because I don’t trust anyone else.

holla at ya girl. i’m 19 years old and i just got a perm to get it that curly! (it’s a wee bit shorter, more ‘fro-like). be proud of what you got! but i hear ya for your wedding day, sometimes you just feel more natural in something that’s not yours.

I can sympathize. My whole life I have been the girl with the BIG curly hair. Your hair is tame compared to mine. I have tight, thick long curly hair. When straightened it comes to my waist, curly, it’s past my sholders, huge difference. There have been a handful of times that I actually had a stylist try to tame this massive hair, every time, there was failure. I’ve had them thin it out, relax it cut it and style it. It seems nobody can handle it. I can only trust my self to do my hear. When I go get a trim they draw straws to see who gets stuck with me. Seriously! At least you have a stylist you trust. I on the other habd will have to do my own hair. I play roller derby and have done some photo shoots, but I ALWAYS straighten my hair out for them to be able to deal with it. Nobody can straighten it the way I do. It only took me 33 years to learn how! LOL! Oh, and in ase you were wondering, it takes me 2 hours just to straighten it. True story! So consider yourself lucky that you don’t have hair like mine.

I like the curls! I have curly hair too and I am so over taking hours straightening it. My hair also reacted really badly to chemical straightening, so going natural is the way for me. Sometimes I straighten it for special occasions, but really, curly hair is me. Your curls look good! Embrace them!

I have curly hair, not quite as curly as yours but I love my curls. I never EVER straighten it. I will have it curly for the wedding too…and probably down because I haven’t had long hair to put up in 5 years and i dont have the patience to grow it out now!

My hair is naturally wavy, so many times I add a few curls with the curling iron to vamp up the wave. Straightening can be done, but because my hair is long, it takes awhile to achieve that glossy look.

Awee but I LOVE your curly hair!!!! My hair is curly (not as curly as yours though) and my Hubs loves it. He actually HATES it when I straighten my hair. I decided to go with simple little up-do.

I’m not sure what your plans are but have you heard of the Keritin treatment? I’ve heard it works well for folks! I only mention because of Mr. Lox’s response to your question. Maybe you could do big curlers and have like soft old hollywood glam curls. Can’t wait to see what you are thinking!

For the most part it seems like most of us always want what we don’t have. The grass is always greener and all of that. For those that embrace their curls, you go girls! ;)

@7mom: oh yes, I eagerly devoured Jam’s curly hair post. She and I have vastly different kinds of hair though. Mine is very fine with small tight curls. Hers looks thicker with larger curls.

@Mrs. Dolphin: It’s like you read my mind. After I wrote this, I emailed my girl about Keratin treatments. I have my regular color appt this Friday and we’re going to talk about it. The only problem is how EXPENSIVE it is!
