A Hairy Dilemma

February 7th, 2011 @ 11:08 am by Mrs. Lox

So last time I promised we’d talk about my wedding-day-hair plans. So here we are.

Very early in my wedding planning, I ran across a hair picture I fell in mad hairy love with. It was this one:

A Hairy Dilemma : wedding accessories baltimore hair Lox1 lox1

I have been in love with this since I first saw it. (Source)

The thing is, the girl in the picture has straight straight hair. Her straight hair was curled and then styled to make this happen. So I always figured I would dry mine straight and then my stylist would curl it and make this happen.

Unfortunately, my stylist says it would be best to create something like this using my natural curl. She had some very good stylist-type reason why straightening it then curling it was wrong. I usually just do whatever she says, so I agreed. At first.

Except now I’m remembering how much I hate my curls. And Mr. Lox hates my curls. And so having curls on my wedding day is not my best idea. But also, I need my hair to be soft around my face. There’s nothing worse than a fat face and a severe hairdo!

So it is that I have no stinking idea what I’m going to do now. Any suggestions?

Two very important things to remember:
1. You do not have a fat face!! You have a lovely heart-shaped face. With cute dimples. People would kill for those dimples!
2. It’s your wedding. Your stylist may be right, but I bet if you reminded her that you really love that style, she could find a way to make it work for you. If not, maybe ask how close she can get to that style using your natural curl. If she refuses to try…maybe shop around for a stylist who’ll do what you want.

my advice will be to change hairdressers! if you feel like this is not going to be how you want your hair then you will never forgive yourself if your hair isnt how you want it. Make sure you do trials first, both ways then you will see which is best

I think your hairstylist is wrong! I have naturally curly hair that I straighten too, and that hairdo would be a MESS with natural curls. It would just look like a rat’s nest. Maybe doing a half-blowout so that your curls are more wavy would work better than fully straightening and then curling with an iron, but I don’t think your natural curls would create that particular look very well at all.

I agree with Ohheavenlyday- your hairstylist is wrong, dead wrong. I have THICK curly crazy hair and often blow it out, iron it, and then use a curling iron on it. Curling iron curls or curls done w/rollers are much different looking than natural curls. The trick is have “one day old hair”, as in blow it out the day before, sleep on it, and then have it curled the next day. That updo would definitely be possible in that way.

I have a similar shaped face and did a style very similar to this for my wedding. It turned out beautiful. PM me if you would like to see pictures.

I’m a curly girl too, but not quite as curly as you (I would kill for your curls btw). What if you wash your hair and style curly the day/night before and then she takes a curling iron (probably a medium barrel) to your hair the day of. That way you would ensure not stick straight hair (if for some reason your straightened hair won’t take the curl) and you also should get a more “relaxed” curly/wavy look like what is in the picture. what you would get naturally. I had something similar done for my brother’s wedding (my hair was half up/half down though).

I agree with the above comments…you should check out another stylist bc that just doesn’t sound right to me. Straightening and re-curling curly hair seems very common to me.

Agree with all of the above—-with that being said if you decide you don’t want curl in your hair there are many gorgeous soft side swept looks!! I’m currently finding tons to see if it will work on my hair and like you said not be too severe! I have no idea how to add a picture to this response but PM me if you want and I will send you two of my favorite soft celebrity styles that are straight. Good luck and remember you will look gorgeous!!

I don’t see why curls that are made by the stylist are better than your own natural curls. I think it’s usually better to work with how your hair naturally is than to fight it. Perhaps you could have the stylist try it and you’ll find yourself pleasantly surprised. (If you don’t like it, you can always figure something else out.)

As a naturally curly haired girl, who doesn’t straighten her hair I can’t really offer an opinion on the straightening first before re-curling.

But I can completely understand the “There’s nothing worse than a fat face and a severe hairdo!” comment. Although its not that we have fat faces, its that severe hairdo’s make round faces LOOK fat. I was a bridesmaid 3 times and each time my only request to the stylist was “just don’t make me look fat”, they would laugh and say ‘don’t worry’ and yet every time I would end up with my hair pulled tightly away from my face making it look all the more rounder and in my opinion ‘fat’.

So I have decided to leave my hair down for my wedding because I do not want to look at pictures later and regret it.

Good Luck!

@c.:

It’s not that stylist-made curls are better in general than natural curls, it’s just for that hairstyle, natural curls will not give her that look. They won’t be as smooth or long and twisty and ropy; they’ll be tight and, well, curly!

I have very curly hair, too, and I am faced with the same dilemma for my wedding day…

I think that the blowout/stylist-made curls will be so much easier to control - you’ll know what your hair is going to look like. If your hair is like mine, it is a crap shoot what the curls look like from one day to another. I’m terrified of having a bad natural curl day on my wedding. Plus, everytime a stylist starts to do things to my natural curls, it ends up poofy and frizzy. Personally, I’d rather just have them deal with what they know how to handle (straight hair they can curl!).

Good luck! I’d make that stylist do whatever you want!

I have super kinky curly hair and the day before my wedding I went to my normal stylist and got a trim and a blow out. The next morning my wedding hair stylist did the whole curling iron curled updo and it rocked, It came out so much better than at my trial. The difference was having it blown out and resting a day rather than using a flat iron.

My advice - if you’re not handy with a blow dryer get some once else to do it and skip the flat iron. Your wedding day stylist should easily be able to get your hair to hold a curl and it wont take as long because it will already be straight.

My hair looked awesome for both the rehearsal the day before and the wedding. And since the wedding I’ve been doing Keratin treatments and I love them! (i was afraid to try it our before the wedding)

Have you maybe considered getting a relaxer put in? So your hair isn’t so curly? I think you’d have enough time to do that if its an option for you. If your hair is nice and thick it shouldn’t even cause too much damage… maybe talk to a stylist you trust about it. And consider just telling your stylist how you feel about it. She should listen.

I too have curly hair and I had my hair done almost EXACTLY like your inspiration pic. Seriously, I can send you pics. I didn’t even realize I wanted my hair like that until my trial. She had me style my hair curly just as I would on a daily basis in the morning and then worked from there. She did re-curl the curls that werent as smooth or had a funky curl but mostly it was my own curl and it looked great!

But, I agree that if you don’t want a curly look then I would keep looking :( You can always have your stylist do it this way and just go home and see what your FI says. You never know… he may love it!!

Good luck :)

As far as finding a different stylist… that’s not the problem. The stylist doing my hair is my normal stylist. I’d trust her with anything. She’s amazing.

She doesn’t want to straighten my hair and re-curl it because messing with it that much can affect the hair’s ability to hold curl. She’s not wrong. We just haven’t had a chance to discuss alternatives since I decided I don’t want my natural curl on our wedding day.

@c.: I totally appreciate what you’re saying. However what I’m saying is that I don’t like what nature gave me. Never have and never will. So leaving it be is not a good option for me.

@Adriana.Niva: I have very fine hair and while there is a decent amount of it, it isn’t thick by any means. It is also very fragile. I used to chemically straighten my hair, however then I decided I wanted to color it. On fragile hair, you can only do one or the other. I chose color. You’re close though. ;) I’m looking into Keratin treatments instead. It has the same general effect however it’s actually *good* for your hair. :)

Using your natural curl doesn’t have to mean that it’ll be in your face. Surely she could pull your curls back & twist/tuck them in a similar style to your inspiration? Then nobody would really know whether your hair was curled or straight before the style.

Are you having a trial? I totally recommend one!
