Mrs. Bacon's Picture
Mrs. Bacon, Chicago Age and Occupation: 26, Digital Advertising Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, IT Client Services Engagement Date: June 17, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Ravenswood Billboard Factory About Me: I'm a Midwestern girl that can't seem to commit to staying in one place for too long and is constantly daydreaming about my next adventure. I am an aspiring foodie with a weak spot for the unusual and I love semi-reality food television. My other loves easily include laughing as a form of exercise, a book that I can't put down, summer baseball games, espresso with whipped cream, couch potato days and nights with the ridiculous Mr. Bacon, and our two kitties, Lincoln and Sawyer. We're planning a faux-destination wedding for 150 of our closest friends and family in the city we've both adopted as home that has a modern, yet whimsical twist and as many personal touches as we can manage.
About Mrs. Bacon

Time to Meet the Bacon Bits

February 7th, 2011 @ 3:14 pm by Mrs. Bacon

I love pets of pretty much any shape and size.

I’ve grown up with all kinds of house pets starting with a smart-as-a-whip German Shepherd mix named Micah when I was itty bitty growing up in a tiny town in Northern Minnesota to matching Siamese cats all through high school. I babysat the class guinea pig over spring break in the first grade, dutifully picking grass for him to eat from the nearby meadow. I helped my dad clean out a fish tank as long as basketball player is tall in the fifth grade. I was pulled around on a sled by a husky-terrier mix in middle school (let me tell you, he was a goofy looking dog with those little legs). I cleaned cat boxes every week in high school for our three cats: Meeka, Mocha and Mooka (please say those names aloud along with the previously mentioned dog). I clipped the claws of a friend’s cat in college.

OK, so this was not actually a pet, but I did horseback ride at Girl Guide camp. Does that count?

Clearly, I wasn’t about to be pet-free once I was a real life adult living in the big, bad world. Enter the roadblock: The Baconator is “not a cat person” and our apartment didn’t allow dogs, nor are we at a place in our lives where we can commit to training a dog.

Slowly, I started sending pictures of adorable, adoptable kittens to him and that roadblock began to crumble. Finally, over Father’s Day weekend 2009, we found ourselves at PAWS, a Chicago no-kill shelter, filling out paperwork to adopt our very first Bacon Bit, Lincoln, a brown tuxedo tabby kitten.

Lincoln!

Are we great patriots that loooooooooove Abe Lincoln? Nope. We are people that are terrible at reading fine print and were towed from our parking place by a towing company named Lincoln. If we hadn’t gotten towed, we would have made it to our initial destination on the far side of town, a public Chicago shelter that has so many pets, it can’t afford to be no-kill. But, we got our little red car towed to the far side of town while eating burgers, so we headed over to PAWS instead, and that’s where we fell in love with our first furbaby!

His First Day Home

Lincoln was pretty lonely during his first year in our house, and he was getting a bit of a reputation as a biter since he had no fellow rambunctious companions. A year later, the weekend before Father’s Day 2010 (and the weekend after our engagement!!!), we were back at PAWS, adopting a little orange tuxedo kitten to grown our baconlicious family. This little guy was clearly a trouble maker, jumping on unsuspecting sleeping kittens, batting at my ponytail and spilling kibble all over the floor, so being the LOST fans we are, there was only one name that made sense: Sawyer.

Sawyer!

It took us a good couple of weeks for them to get along, but now they are lost without each other. If Lincoln is in another room and Sawyer can’t get in, Sawyer cries. If one is sound asleep next to the radiator, you better bet the other is snuggled up next to him. But it’s not all Kodak moments of cuteness, they do plenty of chasing each other around our little apartment and there is the occasional hiss if a swipe is landed just right, but mostly, they are definitely cat of the day calendar worthy.

C’mon, they even sleep the same!

Now that you’ve made it to the end, how is this wedding related? Well, we can’t figure out how to include them into the big day. A cat ring bearer is a pretty radical idea, but I have a feeling those rings will wander off as they please.

Does anyone else have furry family members that don’t fit the typical wedding party bill? How are you including them in the big day?

Omg Bacon, I am feeling the same. My furbaby child, Achilles (striped tabby) wants to be involved in the wedding. Really…I can feel it just by looking at him.

My fiance and I have each have a dog (his actually came from PAWS as well) that we don’t really think would do well as ringbearers. They’re kind of rambunctious, which is fun most of the time, but not really wedding appropriate, and we don’t know how we’d get them home between the ceremony and reception. So, here’s what we’re doing instead of having them physically there:

1.) We’re putting their faces on buttons. I was joking with the FMIL over christmas that we should have buttons to identify all the engineers that will be at our wedding (between family and friends there will be a lot) and she randomly mailed us a buttonmaker a couple months ago. So, we’re going to make buttons with silly sayings (”Kiss me, I’m an engineer” and stuff like that) and fun photos on them, and two of the designs will be photos of our boys.

2.) We’re also thinking about putting pictures of the two of us through the years on the guest book table, and photos of the whole family (furbabies and all) will definitely be a part of that if it happens.

OK: That picture of them sleeping together? TOO FRIGGIN’ CUTE. Also, the mischievous look in Sawyer’s eye after you talk about him being a trouble maker is too perfect. (I’m a cat person, can you tell?)

We’re also trying to figure out how to include all of our babies in the big day. No easy task! Good luck on your quest!

I loved the idea of how Mrs. Octopus made a signature cocktail for the reception and named it after her dog Daffodil… the bar menu even had a little silhouette of the pup at the bottom! Maybe you could have a Lincoln and a Sawyer cocktail of choice… one brown and one orange, even!

Your cats are adorable! I love the look of table numbers with pets on them. I think a photo guestbook of your cats would be very cute too.

Gorgeous! We have Oscar kitty, our spoiled boy. I want to adopt a brother or sister for him, but we’re already being sneaky having him in this apartment (no pets!) - instead, Mr. Jag is making me wait until we have a house so I can get my dogs instead!

My fiance and I are incorporating our dog and cat on our cake topper. We are having a topper made from the etsy seller lollipopworkshop. Everyone thinks we’re crazy but they are our babies and we couldn’t imagine our big day without them! :)

Love the idea of naming signature drinks after your furbabies, but who’d want to drink warm Dharma beer? ;)

Maybe you could incorporate some of your kitty pics in your paper products, like if you do programs you could have a picture of them on the back, or include them in your table numbers like Taryn- http://mrjones-and-me.blogspot.com/2009/09/my-first-and-favorite-diy-table-numbers.html . Or have them immortalized in clay and have them peeping out from the sides of the tiers on your cake or something.

We are going to have a Designated Fuzz Wrangler. One of our friends who loves loves loves animals will be attending to Kitty during the ceremony. And there will be a harness involved, since it will be a strange place. It’s silly, but he’s a groomsman, too. I can’t imagine him not being there after he’s seen us through our whole relationship. I just hope our human groomsman doesn’t mind a bit of fur.
If you want to be less involved/worried, pictures andold tags work, too. I am including the tag of my deceased cat in my bouquet.
Good to see so many animal lovers!

I say go for them in your cake somehow, even if not part of the actual cake topper ( a little customized figure of the two on their backs by your feet?). Or you can even have pics of them up somewhere. I keep wondering the same thing as we are having a destination wedding and we got our dog exactly a week before he proposed, so he’s our little baby :) My cats were less enthused on the other hand….

SO cute! I have two furbabies too, and one of them sleeps just like yours - and snores louder than my Mr.! Which is a good thing I guess, although it still means that someone in my bed is snoring. ;)

Ours are both too shy to have them anywhere near the wedding, but I thought I might use them in postage! We have a couple great close-up pictures of their faces, so I’m thinking of having stamps of them to use on our STDs. @AnimalLovingBride: I love the idea of having a cake topper made, too!

Have your MOH and Best Man carry a kitty each, instead of a bouquet (for her)? :b

wish we could include our furbaby (Elmo, she’s a diva calico), but I don’t think she would make a very good ringbearer :)

Hahaha, a cat ring bearer! If you could leash-train them before the big day I would say do it, because that would be so awesome!
