About Mrs. Pain au Chocolat

As much fun as it was to devise a clever “we’re engaged!” story for my mom, we brainstormed even harder when it came to our friends. We came up with some creative ways to surprise them, but my favorite “spill the beans” story has to be when we told our good friend R.

The engagement was still a secret. The few family members who knew promised to keep it a secret (and off Facebook) so we could share the news in person with close friends and distant family.

We wanted R to be the first friend to find out. We’d been so persistent about it, I was positive she knew something was up. That weekend, I texted her to say I NEEDED a manicure, would she like to join me? But she had plans. (Who turns down a manicure?!) I thought my plan was foolproof. Mr. P stepped in with a plan of his own, texting her, “You have to see the bath reno—we’ve made so much progress since that last time you were here.” She would stop by while out running errands.

It had gone from this…

…and was stalled out waiting for the replacement countertop.

The bathroom was unchanged since her last visit and, while underwhelmed, she politely complimented the progress. Mr. P admitted we hadn’t touched it and actually I had to show her something. I held up my left hand while emphatically asking again if she wanted to get a manicure. It took a few seconds to click and when it did, boy did she freak out! Lots of screaming, jumping up and down, and hugs.

Did you pull off any good engagement surprises?

I tried the same method with my mom (just showing her the ring) and she started hysterically crying… out of sadness… the crazy woman thought we had eloped and she was really upset! She tends to see things in an over-dramatic light but I love her. lol

My FI proposed the day before I was flying home for the holidays. He had asked my parents permission so they knew it was coming and I called them right away to tell them, but I made it clear that I wanted no one else to know so that I could tell them in person when I got home.

I was meeting my sister and brother in law at the air port where our connecting flights met. I walked off the plane with my jacket over my arm, told her I had good news, and she screamed and grabbed my hand out from under my jacket. I was expecting some jumping but she said later she didn’t want to make a scene. Still a great reaction!

I got to spend the rest of the week surprising my family and friends as I saw them.

I never got a chance because every time I talked to anyone they asked if I was engaged before I could utter a word!

My FI had our friends waiting at our fave Mexican restaurant, which was a surprise to me. I jumped up and down and squealed and made a complete spectacle of myself. I think I was more vocal about the impromptu engagement party than I was about the proposal!

That was actually one of the things I loved about telling people in person - all I had to do was hold up my hand and smile!

@Mrs. Husky: Thank you. It’s held up well… though we (Mr. P) just replaced the drain line the hard way (through the ceiling below).
