Mrs. Pretzel, Seattle Age and Occupation: 32 Learning, Training, and Development Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28 Manufacturing Engineer Engagement Date: September 2, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Church & The Engine Room at Georgetown Studios About Me: I’m just a thirty-something girl who never dreamed of weddings, poofy dresses, or ritzy receptions. I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married. Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.

Twisted Together: A Favor of Love

February 7th, 2011 @ 10:09 am by Mrs. Pretzel

Mr Pretzel and I had a lot of fun infusing fun little beer and brewery themes into our wedding. For us, our favors were the icing on the cake. Yesterday I shared with you a peek into how we bottled the beer bread mix but I wanted to give you some more details.

Yum!

Materials list:

  • 22 oz beer bottles (a case of 12 for $14.50)
  • Plain bottle caps (1 lb for 5.25 - we had way more than we needed)
  • Beer capper (Free- we borrowed ours from Groomsman V - but they run about $15)
  • Printable Beer Bottle Labels in brown Kraft paper (100 labels for $17.49)
  • Silicone funnel (we bought this type for $10 each)

We used our “beer logo” that I designed way back when

After our mock up, we decided that a recipe with fewer ingredients was the way to go.

  • 3 cups organic all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

The labels were made from beer boxes. Each one was different and unique—not to mention colorful.

We mixed a batch at a time, using a large mixing bowl. In assembly line style one person would fill the bowl with ingredients, then pass it to a filler who would fill the bottle using the funnel. The dry ingredients don’t flow easily through the funnel and we resorted to massaging the soft funnel—in the style of milking a cow—funny yet effective. In order to fit all of the mix in the bottle we had to knock it down by tapping on the side of bottle or banging it on the table. It was a lot of work, but the end result was a fun favor that our guests could bake at home just by adding 1 bottle of beer to the mix.

The Pretzels’ Beer Bread Recipe

  • 1 bottle of beer bread mix
  • 2 Tablespoons chopped fresh dill
  • 1 cup finely grated sharp cheddar
  • 12 ounces room temperature beer

Heat oven to 375° . Combine mix, dill, and cheese in a bowl. Mix in beer slowly until combined. Batter will be thick. Spread in a loaf pan and bake until golden brown, about 45 minutes. Cool for 20 minutes. Serve warm.

Thanks to a wonderful idea by our coordinator at City Catering Company, we had a kick a$$ way to display our favors.

It took a few minutes for some of our guests to understand that we hadn’t brewed beer for them, but they loved the favors all the same.

What detail of your wedding became a labor of love?

@jlharbold: We tried out a couple recipes before we settled on this one. It’s really good- nice and simple. Stay away from using really dark beers in it and you’ll be fine- the beer you use lends its flavor to the bread so each batch is unique. Our guests loved it.

@Mrs. Hermit Crab: we have about a case of leftovers :)

These are some of the best and most personal favors I’ve ever seen! What did the cost per favor come out to?

@BettyBride: Admittedly I stopped keeping track of the cost per favor when it came to the ingredients. Each bottle/cap/label came out to $3.00 The ingredients are super inexpensive (flour, sugar, etc) so I think it was under $5.00 total. We gave one bottle to each family (not each guest) who attended.
