Shades of Grey

February 8th, 2011 @ 12:28 pm by Ms. Sloth

Back in the fall, when I decided that I wanted my bridesmaids in mismatched grey, I gave them a few guidelines. The first two were easy: the dresses had to be grey—any shade—and approximately knee-length.

The other guidelines were a bit more open to individual interpretation. Since it’s a late afternoon garden wedding, I wanted the dresses to be afternoon and outdoor appropriate. That meant nothing too slinky, sparkly or sexy, in favor of ladylike and romantic. Other than that, the girls had free rein.

Just a few weeks after I’d given the girls their instructions, Bridesmaid J emailed me to let me know that she’d already purchased her dress. I asked her where she got it and she couldn’t wait to tell me that she’d gotten it on the sale rack at Target—for under $20.

Bridesmaid K took a few more months to find her dress. No problem, there was no rush. One day, she texted me with news that she found the perfect dress on sale at Banana Republic.

My little sister, Bridesmaid C, was the holdout. I wasn’t surprised about this.

See, here’s the thing about my sister: she just doesn’t care about clothes. She’s not poorly dressed or anything, and she always looks nice, but she just doesn’t have the time or energy to worry about buying clothing. The other issues is that my sister lives in the Netherlands, so while I was willing to help her find something, the only help I could provide was by emailing her links to U.S. stores for inspiration.

But finally, yesterday, she sent me a link to a dress on a Dutch website to ask my opinion. I loved it, and she bought it!

I mocked up a little something in Photoshop in order to see how the dresses looked together, and I love it!

It’s cohesive without being matchy, and their shoes, accessories and silk fans will pull the look together. I can’t wait to see them all dressed to kill on the wedding day!

Did you dress your wedding party in mismatched dresses?

I love how these dresses look together! Cohesive but not too matchy-matchy.

We’re letting or ladies pick their own dresses with very similar guidelines to yours and I look forward to seeing them in something they love looking great!

Ya know…I was going to have them match, but I think if everyone picks a shade of burgundy/wine/purple, and they all wear metallic shoes, it would look really nice. Thanks for the idea!!

Your dresses look beautiful. I love the gray too! My girls wore mismatched black dresses from stores like JCPenney’s, Dillards, White House Black Market, and Lane Bryant and they looked beautiful too!

I’m having my girls wear blue dresses of their choosing. Given that my wedding is a destination wedding, I didn’t want to force my girls to pay even more money on my wedding. This way, if they wanted to spend $100+ on a dress that they will wear again, then great, go for it. Each girl was given a blue paint chip (how we chose our wedding colors) so that the girls could, when shopping, have something to compare the color to. I’ve also sent the girls pictures of different dresses that I have found, but they are certainly not limited to those.

I love when brides choose to do mismatched colors or styles or all of the above! I think it makes the bridemaids a lot happier and creates such a unique look!

Love this! I gave my girls some color swatches and told them to pick out whatever they like, so I totally get where you are coming from. My limitations are the color and that, yes, they should be around knee length. :)

They looks awesome! I love that the shades of grey will be slightly different too. I was open to the girls mismatching, but they all preferred the same style - wasn’t expecting that, but they look hot in smoky grey anyway!

We’re doing the mis-matched look as well. I told my girls that they could find the dresses anyway as long as it fit our colors and was knee-length. They all ended up going to separate bridal salons and finding dresses that look spectacular. I can’t wait to see them all together!

I was going to let them pick out there own, as long as it was black. Then I found one that I fell in love with and I knew it would be just perfect.

Yes! All are navy, but they are different! There were 5 everyone likes, so between those my 8 girls are picking. So obv some will match but I love the look of it!

those dresses are going to look great!

i really wanted to do the mismatched look, but for a formal evening fall wedding, it didn’t seem to work. plus, my three sisters (the bridesmaids) were dying to match for some reason.
