I’m that girl in the cubicle farm with all the cool toys and the file cabinet covered in magnetic poetry. I still use smiley faces in my emails, whether people like it or not. This is not the first rodeo for Mr. Lox nor me. And together, we are planning an intimate afternoon wedding on a budget we can afford by ourselves.

To Do or Not To Do

February 8th, 2011 @ 8:14 am by Mrs. Lox

So, with roughly three months left until the wedding, I am starting that not-so-slow slide into panic over my to-do list. Actually, if I’m totally honest with you? I’ve been trying to avoid the panic by avoiding the list. Somehow I think this is not the best of strategies.

So today, I am getting real with myself. And apparently in order to have this little moment with myself, I need to be accountable to the hive. And so it goes. Remember this little guy?

To Do or Not To Do : wedding baltimore diy Lox12 lox1

It looks so sweet and innocent here…

Right. That’s just a giant pile of uh-oh at three months out. Hive, how did I let this happen?

To be fair, a few things have changed. I have completed close to 150 of the mini paper lanterns. The STD envelopes are totally finished and have already reached their final destinations. And I added and then completed the photo-hunt cards. Unfortunately, I also added the photo-sharing cards and the table numbers.

The rest? Looks exactly the same. And some of those things I don’t even have good ideas for! For example, I was dead set on making coffee-filter roses to give to our mothers. That way they could keep the flowers we hand them forever and ever. And to be honest, I totally sat down and made little templates for all of the petals and then did two trial runs. And, well, they were OK. Just OK.

All of this is to say that I’m starting to feel overwhelmed. I’m sure there must be a few shortcuts I can take in there somewhere, but I’ll be darned if I’ve figured out where yet! Anyone out there have some awesome ideas to dig me out of this ever-growing DIY hole I’m in?

Has your to-do list ever overwhelmed you? If so, how did you handle it? And if not, how did you keep that from happening?

Don’t worry L. it all comes together in the end. I did most of my projects in the last three months. And think of it this way, things like table numbers and cards on the table are much easier to complete because you need few of them. I did all our different signs for both ceremony and reception in one night. :-P

“I’ve been trying to avoid the panic by avoiding the list. Somehow I think this is not the best of strategies.” So this isn’t me yet, but in about 9 months, it will be. No point in denying it. :)

I’m at the four month out point, and this morning, my MOH (sister) sent me a text and said, hey, I need your list so we can plan some stuff (meaning shower!). I said, ok, I’ll get that to you…and then I thought, holy monkeys, we only registered for like 5 things!!! Then I went into a complete panic, b/c I only have 3 of the 8 pomanders done, and they are taking forever to make. I still have to wrap all the candle votives, make the card box, paint the aisle runner, do the invitations (which actually, I can’t seem to put my hands on the kit that I really want!). Anyway, yes, I right there with you Miss Lox!

I finally put my DIY to do list together and almost fainted. I am definitely reserving some of the assembly-line types of jobs for closer to the wedding when our moms are in town and want/need a project. I am also planning on having a few girlie crafting nights with friends. We’ll get there Foxy Loxy! It will get done and be fabulous!

Recruit helpers Lox! It will make things go so much smoother. Bribe people with wine, food, whatever gets them to come to your house and help! It is amazing house fast projects can get accomplished if you have helpers!

I’m 7 months away from my wedding and I already feel overwhelmed, but that might have to do with the fact that I’m also starting a business at the same time.
I would say enlist some help and delegate! It’s hard to let go of all the control, but trust me it’s worth it!

I think I win this one - we cancelled our hotel reception because of unforeseen financial meltdown, and are now three months out starting to plan an entire marquee wedding from scratch. I’m busy distracting myself with all the pretty shiny things, but the bloody invitations aren’t even done yet, and I have no clue what the men are gonna wear! Talking to caterer tomorrow, tho, so if everyone’s fed, watered, sheltered and dancing around th espeakers hooked up to the laptop, it’ll be fine!

Don’t be afraid to use etsy for DIY projects you don’t have time to complete yourself! We’re having paper flower boutonnieres and paper pinwheel bouquets, which I’m positive I could do well myself, but I chose to outsource and am pleased with the decision. When in doubt, go for the less stress option!

Everything’s going to be great Miss Lox! For the mothers, you might consider fabric flowers, like Mrs. Socks did. I made them for a fundraiser and they’re super simple to put together with a glue gun and still last after the wedding! Good luck with everything :)

I have been following the same strategy, not think about it. 3 months seems so close and I have been starting to panic some but I’m trying really hard not to think about it, as there isn’t much I can do until my first grad school semester is over in a week an a half. I’m pretty sure once the semester is over I’m going to have a total freak out over it, especially because I can’t have helpers because they stress me out and usually cause me to have to do twice as much work. So I have no words of guidance, just that you’re not alone.

I think prioritizing your list is the first step. Then enlisting help with your top projects. At least that’s my plan. We’re still at four months out…. we’ll see my stress level in another couple months. ;)

Do not get all stressed out, as you still have three whole months (you can get a lot done in three months!!) and choose your battles… You might not get everything done, but that’ll be ok since only you will know what’s missing ;-)

Oh, the list. The dreaded, perpetually long list. The good news? After the wedding, it falls further and further down your list of google docs, until you finally forget all those pesky lines that were never crossed off. :)
