IT Consultant Engagement Date: May 8, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Vandiver Inn About Me: I’m an East Coast gal born and bred and a suburban brat turned city rat for the last year. Now Mr. Lox and I enjoy walking all kinds of places, having the coolest things around in our backyard, and especially our garage parking. I love gadgets, toys, Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby ice cream, monkeys, and our insane cats. I’m a blonde by birth and a redhead by choice. I’m that girl in the cubicle farm with all the cool toys and the file cabinet covered in magnetic poetry. I still use smiley faces in my emails, whether people like it or not. This is not the first rodeo for Mr. Lox nor me. And together, we are planning an intimate afternoon wedding on a budget we can afford by ourselves.

Serendipity or Insanity?

February 10th, 2011 @ 11:13 am by Mrs. Lox

I’m not sure yet if this is serendipity or insanity. Maybe the hive can help me decide?

The other day I was at one of my favorite craft shops (name removed to protect folks in the rest of this post). I shopped and shopped and shopped, and then headed for the checkout lines. When I got there, I was surprised to see one line had a customer just finishing up with no one behind her, and the others were all a few people deep. So I got in the short line smiling at my luck. Well, that and the fact that everything in my cart was on sale so it didn’t matter that I’d forgotten my coupon. Anyhow, the customer in front of me and the girl working the checkout were having a conversation, which I really couldn’t help but eavesdrop in on.

They were talking about the cashier’s side business. The cashier was saying that they are trying to get more well known, especially with brides. My interest was piqued. But I couldn’t tell what kind of business they were discussing. At first I thought it was something crafty—I mean, we were in a craft store and all. Then I wasn’t so sure. Then the cashier was saying how they also do parties and lessons. And I was just no closer to figuring this out. Being nosey was totally backfiring on me!

Finally, the customer was getting ready to go, and she said how great the cashier’s eye makeup looked. For the record, it was awesome. Of course! The cashier is a makeup artist with a brand new business! And what is the one vendor I am still without? You know. A makeup artist.

So I told the girl about my wedding and got her information. That night, a quick search on Google revealed the business is definitely new. So new that it has no web presence yet. So I have no reviews or anything to try to sift through. But the timing on this is just so amazing. I mean, I’ve just been starting to sweat over this makeup thing. (Please don’t say DIY it. I’m so so hopeless.) I feel like fate or the universe or whatever has sort of dropped her in my lap.

So, hive, the question is this: Is it the happiest accident that I found this girl? Or is it absolutely insane to book a vendor just starting out for a very important day? What do you think?

have a trial with her and see if she’s any good. it’s not insane to book a new vendor. Our photographer was very new when we booked him.

I would say not insane, but maybe a trial is in order? If her makeup looked awesome then chances are, she can do great makeup. I am going to use an old high school classmate. She doesn’t have a formal business but she has pictures on facebook of girls she did hair/makeup and they look awesome. Besides, you can probably get a great deal, she will come to your…important things :)

Ask her for a trial, and see if you like the results. There’s nothing wrong with trying her out, and then making a decision. I would ask her for what she would think schedule wise (ceremony is at 3, what time would you arrive to start, etc). As well, if she’s done other types of events, see if she’ll give you referrals and/or pictures of clients.

Not crazy, just get a trial first just in case.

All my vendors were just breaking into the biz. Of course, I made sure they were talented, and it worked out great. Those people need to start somewhere and if they give you a great price, an you have a go with the flow attitude I think it’s a great way to go. You can’t expect perfection of course! Book a trial and see what happens?

I agree with the others, as long as you have a trial there is no problem.

I agree with previous posts. You really need to ask for a trial before you commit to this woman doing your makeup for your wedding. I know a lot of people that can do their own makeup, but I always seem to look like a clown when they do mine. Plus, she may be the type of makeup artist that thinks she knows what’s best for you. (Even if it means bright blue eyeshadow) I think if you get a good feel from her at the trial, then you should go with it. Fate has offered you a helping hand!

Do a trial. Even with experienced vendors with an established client base, do a trial. I think it’s fantastic. The universe provides!

I agree that you should do a trial. I just try to remember that every vendor was just starting out once! So, I think it’s great you’re giving her a chance to build her portfolio and hopefully getting a great price since she is new…. Win/Win!

Sometimes things just fall into place like that! However, you need to do a trial in any case beforehand - and if she’s as good as it seemed from her own makeup, go for it!

Wow, how lucky are you? Do a trial, I’m sure she won’t be as expensive as an established MUA so the trial shouldn’t be too much. Lucky!

I agree - do a trial and if you like her, book her! Everyone has to start somewhere. Besides, maybe she’ll cut you a good deal since you’re a blogger and all. If she does a good job it’s a lot of promo for her!

everyone has to start somewhere… she might give you a good price because she’s new to it, and then end up being TOTALLY awesome. A trial does not mean you have to choose her… so see how it goes! Good luck!

I don’t think it’s crazy and I agree with some of the other comments before you set anything in stone request that she do a trial with you to make sure she can do what you like for your day.

I say do a make-up trial first and take it from there. If her eye make-up looked amazing then that’s a good start. Lets hope it’s serendipity.
