I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Sampling Ceremony Music

February 11th, 2011 @ 3:09 pm by Mrs. Brooch

I’ve been at a loss trying to figure out the music for our ceremony. I love Pachelbel’s Cannon D, but I’ve heard it so many times and I’d really like something different for our wedding. I’ve never been a big fan of Wagner’s Bridal Chorus either, and it’s pretty common, too. I don’t have anything against these songs, but I always knew w’d be walking to the beat of our own tune. :)

Just like Miss. Ostrich’s song choices, we want music that is going to reflect the mood and meaning of our wedding. Hers were a perfect for a beach ceremony, and I need ours to go well with a garden ceremony. I haven’t discussed this yet, but Mr. B’s dad is a minister and he’ll be marrying us! I mentioned my dad was making a large cross as the focal point and we intend on making God a major focus during this part of the day. Since we have this very religious undertone, we’re going to have mostly gospel music for our ceremony.

Here are some of the considerations.

For the prelude, I love the acoustic version of How Great Thou Art. I’m a sucker for hymns, which you’ll notice as your scroll through these songs, and they are definitely fitting for the spiritual experience we want our guests to have.

I’m really not sure what song we will use for the processional, but one of my very favorite hymns is In the Garden. It seems ultra fitting for a garden wedding and it’s a little more upbeat than How Great Thou Art. Hopefully it will be a great start to the main event!

This might seem a little odd to most of you, but there’s this song—a very special song—that means a lot to me, which I plan to walk down the aisle to. It’s a song I listened to almost every day during a rough patch in our relationship when we were separated. It’s a very uplifting song and it’s extremely inspiring, I think. I love the beat. I love the words. I love Love Lifted Me by Kim Hopper.

I have no idea at what point during this song I’ll actually be walking down the aisle! God knows it won’t take a full six minutes! I really like the solo around 2:00 minutes (skip there and let me know what you think), but I’ve even toyed with the idea of doing this acoustic as well. I know the words by heart, so I’ll be singing along in my head no matter what everyone else hears.

Man, I love that song!

All of this is still to be determined, mind you!

Next, the recessional! This music is ULTRA important since it’s what’s going to get everyone all excited and ready for the party! One of our favorite-ever Gospel songs is Faithful is our God. The beginning is perfect: “Come on everybody, clap your hands!” However, I’m not sure I like how obviously gospel this song is… does that make sense? It’s upbeat, but it may not be upbeat enough! Tell me your thoughts.

You know what I think might be better? Something to break up all the religious music and get us really stoked about the reception, like The Verve’s  Bittersweet Symphony! They could totally start playing it as the ceremony is wrapping up and hit those major, awe-inspiring notes when it’s done!! Wee!! We’re married!!

Does getting REALLY excited when I hear that song mean it should be the one? ‘Cause I’m REALLY excited right now! OMGosh guys…we’re so close! Ahhhhh! I can’t wait to be Mrs. Brooch! I can’t wait for that moment when we’ve been pronounced husband and wife, kiss, and look over to all our friends and family…

Yeah, Bittersweet Symphony might be the one!

My last, but definitely not least favorite, is Life in Technicolor by Coldplay Cover! OMG!   I seriously think it could work for prelude or recessional music. I want it somewhere, no doubt. The violin totally gets me every time. Tears! Tears of joy, obviously.

Are you having trouble picking ceremony music? What’s your theme? What are your top choices?

Need more suggestions? Check out this thread. I found it extremely helpful!

I can’t listen to these songs right now (no headphones at work). I love “Faithful is Our God”– I agree that it is obviously gospel. But it’s soo good.

I guess you usong that song would depend on the tone of your reception that follows. Would it share the same level of spirituality that you see to convey in the reception?

I’m definitely subscribing to this post for music inspiration for when I am engaged and am selecting music with the hubby-to-be. =)

I LOVE your music choices - though we’re likely going with Canon for the beginning… and I was with you on Bittersweet Symphony, the huge notes as the song peaks would make for an fabulous recessional!

Very cool!!! I’m using Pachebel to walk in but when we are done being married, we are walking out to Led Zeppelin’s “whole lotta love” :)

**In the Garden Joke**
Little Boy (praying): Dear Andy, thank you for my mommy and my daddy and..
Mom (in a hushed whisper): Why are you praying to Andy? You’re supposed to pray to God.
Little Boy: But his name is Andy… Andy walks with me, Andy talks with me, Andy tells me I am his own

OMG I so wanted to work Bittersweet Symphony into our ceremony but it just didn’t fit with the tone. That is like, the ultimate wedding song to my mind. The instrumental version of course, not with the lyrics. Why oh why didn’t I think of the instrumental version!!

Bittersweet Symphony reminds me of the movie Cruel Intentions, which isn’t very wedding-y. My vote is for Coldplay all the way!

Also, you might want to re-think the Kim Hopper song, would you really walk down the aisle to a song you listened to incessantly during a rough time you had with your husband-to-be?

Good luck! Keep us posted (as you always do)!

I’m not religious but I’m walking down the aisle to Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah in instrumental. It’s sooo beautiful - give it a listen!

Thanks for those resources! We still have to work out the ceremony music as both of us aren’t exactly musically inclined :P. I’ve been doing some searching, and I know I definitely want to use Kiss the Rain by Yiruma somewhere in there (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCSe66pWNmc). It sounds so nice!
I also really like the song Here I Am by Bryan Adams (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6xr6VKg7sE), I’m thinking maybe the recessional.
