About Mrs. Lox

Please Don’t Mock My Mock-up

February 14th, 2011 @ 12:10 pm by Mrs. Lox

So here’s the thing. I’ve had this centerpiece mock-up in my head for months now. I had it even before we switched venues. I showed it to the owner of the Vandiver at our initial meeting. I showed it to their event coordinator after I moved. I showed it to my DOC when I hired her (before the venue switch, as well). I’ve shown it to some of my friends. And, of course, Mr. Lox and I have looked at it in person from every angle.

But…showing it to the hive is, well, intimidating, you know? There is more creativity in the hive than I could ever even hope to match. And so, even though Mr. Lox and I have declared this good, showing it to you is still a wee bit scary. But in the end, I trust you all, too. So here we go. The long overdue centerpiece mock-up pictures. (I even took fresh shots just for you!)

Please Don’t Mock My Mock-up : wedding baltimore decor Centerpiece 6

You should be honored. I totally busted out the real camera just for you. Now let me set the scene. Remember our tables will be set with fuchsia tablecloths and white overlays. Hence the sad-sack white-towel substitute you see here. Also not pictured are the fresh rose petals we ordered from the florist. Those will be hot pink and orange and scattered on the pink napkin there. This is what I consider to be the “front.” Which is, of course, ridiculous, as this thing will be viewed from all angles.

Please Don’t Mock My Mock-up : wedding baltimore decor Centerpiece 7 From the back

And from the “back.” I still think it’s holding up, so that’s good. How about a view of how it looks before the guests sit down?

Please Don’t Mock My Mock-up : wedding baltimore decor Centerpiece 8 From above

Right. So there it is. Please don’t mock my mock-up! Now that we’ve seen it from all angles, want to know what it took to make that?

First off, you already recognize the tissue-paper pomanders, flower balls, and candles and candle holders. The napkin underneath was part of a lot I bought from another bride. I have 60 pink and 60 orange, which is way more than the number of guests we’ll have. And for the record, I’ll have pink napkins under the centerpieces with orange pomanders, and orange napkins under the pink ones. The other vases and the glass stones in the bottom of each of them are from Dollar Tree. And as we already talked about, the rose petals are missing from the picture. Also, the candles would actually be lit.

So, gently now, dear hive, what do you think of my homemade centerpieces?

They look fantastic!! Congrats, I could never do that. How do they look with the “flowers” clustered closer together?

I think it’s totally adorable and unique! Can’t wait to see a wide view of your reception with all the tables done up! It kinda reminds me of a Dr. Seuss book with their funky trees. (and by the way, Go Baltimore!!).

The flower balls are so cute! I think it will look extra great with the candles lit.

I think they will look great, especially with the petals. How creative.

On a side note, I always think it’s funny how bare the centerpieces look before the rest of the decor is added. Just all alone in the middle of a table. I remember looking at the lanterns I chose and thinking, “Is this really enough?” After place settings were down, everything looked perfect.

It’s fun to see your pieces come together!

They’re super bright and cheerful! And it’s hard to get a sense of them from just photos (sigh) - but I’m wondering if they might be a bit more cohesive without the rocks? The rocks add an additional element to the centrepieces, so it feels like there might be a bit much going on, ya know? Removing them might make the other elements stand out a bit more.

I think it’s a neat concept! I like how the tissue pomander is the centerpeice of the centerpiece, flanked by the two flower balls.
What is the orange tubular thing in the vase of the tissue pomander? Is that necessary, it’s a little distracting to me, especially bc it’s not straight.
I’m not a fan of the napkin underneath. Assuming you will also have a tablecloth already I think the scrunched up napking is a little overkill, too much going on. If it was me I would remove the napkin.

It looks so good, Lox! I like how the tissue poms and flower balls are variations on a theme. I think they compliment each other very well!

I like them but have you thought about spray painting the vases holding up the various balls? It might be worth trying… The attention would automatically go up to the balls if the vases where they sit were opaque. They may look a little better anchored and less “I just stuck some balls on these vases”
I spray painted a TON of glass vases with $.97 white spray paint and I was surprised how awesome they came out. Just a thought :-) I do love that they are non-traditional though!

@mightywombat: I’ll have to try that and see.

@ItsPronounced_ABear: @Rachel: Too funny! I’ll take that as a compliment. :)

@bee: Don’t feel bad! At least you were nice about telling me. ;)

@Emily: Unfortunately, the venue is outside and a bit breezy so I need the rocks to weight the vases down. Since the flower balls and pomander are so light, they need the extra weight.

@Gerbera: That’s actualy the ribbon for hanging the pomander. I do need it because they’ll be hanging on chairs as aisle decor during the ceremony. I can ask the DOC to make them straight tho. ;) Good point on the napkin… it might not be necessary with the rose petals now.

Dear Miss Lox -congrats! I admire your courage to put yourself out there…it’s like showing off your baby to the world for the first time :)
I’ve been following your progress, and it really came together here! The flower balls are so cute. My only suggestion would be to maybe add another strand or two of sheer ribbon to the one that sits in the taller vase. Overall, bravo!

@Miss Lox:
ah. Ok! I love dual purpose! In that case, no one else but you and someone anal like me would notice it. And tons of things were off skewed at our wedding and honestly, I just didn’t care enough to take time away from other things to ask our event staff to change it. hehe.
Since your venue is outdoors, good idea on weighing down the vases. But are the pomanders attached somehow to the vase or weighed down? I can see one swift wind blowing away the tissue pomander. :( I’m not convinced the foam bill inside is enough.

I think they look great - cheerful and celebratory! The only thing I don’t love is the black candles - I do think that all-white candles would make them perfect :)

I love the flower balls! I wish I could borrow the idea and make an entire backdrop for a photobooth like that. :-P

I think it’s a great idea and it’s great that you get to use them in your ceremony as well. A few suggestions: napkins or rose petals-pick one, both together will be too much. I think the candles should all be white, it would look more uniform. I agree with the poster that suggested painting the vases- that way they will look more like holders than vases and it will also cover up the hanging pomander ribbon.

You all ahve made me see the light! I’m ditching the napkins in favor of the rose petals, and I’m going to investigate painting the vases.

Any suggestions on colors for the vases though? I’m afraif white will belnd in with the tablecloths too much. Or am I just being silly?
