Mrs. Lox, Baltimore Age and Occupation: 33, Government Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35. IT Consultant Engagement Date: May 8, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Vandiver Inn About Me: I’m an East Coast gal born and bred and a suburban brat turned city rat for the last year. Now Mr. Lox and I enjoy walking all kinds of places, having the coolest things around in our backyard, and especially our garage parking. I love gadgets, toys, Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby ice cream, monkeys, and our insane cats. I’m a blonde by birth and a redhead by choice. I’m that girl in the cubicle farm with all the cool toys and the file cabinet covered in magnetic poetry. I still use smiley faces in my emails, whether people like it or not. This is not the first rodeo for Mr. Lox nor me. And together, we are planning an intimate afternoon wedding on a budget we can afford by ourselves.
About Mrs. Lox

Don’t Forget to Flush

February 14th, 2011 @ 4:56 pm by Mrs. Lox

So, a while ago the hive convinced me that videography is pretty important most of the time. And then, through the hive, I discovered a videographer whose style is perfect and who was in my price range! I was sure it was serendipity. Well, and the awesomosity of Weddingbee.

As you can see, I was excited. Ecstatic, even. But I had one more hurdle to go. (Or so I thought.) I had to get Mr. Lox to buy into videography, quite literally. One weekend as we were setting off to go somewhere in the car together, I carefully brought it up to him. I tried to be neutral and honestly see where he is on the issue because I truly didn’t want him to feel bullied or pushed into this. He listened and turned to me at the next red light. And asked how much.

I’m sure there were a lot of things I thought he might say here…“You want to spend more money???” or “Will you drop this already?” But instead he said, “How much will it cost?”

OK, so this could still lead somewhere bad. So I quoted him the price from the vendor the hive sent me. He shrugged and told me sure, book them. He thought I was going to quote a much higher number. The price was fine. Go for it. I was surprised. When we got home I gave him another chance to change his mind when I asked if he wanted to see an example. He was game, so I showed him another couple’s video. He liked it! I was getting my videographer!

The next day I was so excited! I fired off an inquiry to the vendor first thing. And then I waited. And waited. And waited. I believe I then waited some more. OK, I really only waited for five days. But seriously, five days without even a how-de-do? So I emailed again, gently reminding them that this was my second request.

You already got the waiting routine down. I waited another three days until I realized I wasn’t going to get an answer. Not ever. And my dream of a beautiful highlight video and ceremony and reception footage was in the crapper.

This is how I feel, pictured with the aforementioned crapper. (source)

I have since mounted a search. And it seems there are two kinds of videographers in my general vicinity. Those that I can afford but don’t like. And those that I like but can’t afford. Wait, I lied…there are three. The third is the kind I like and can afford, but that can’t be bothered to get back to me. Three types, then.

So now I’m just kind of sad and defeated. I get that I could have raw footage for cheap. But what I really want is some edited footage and then a gorgeous highlight video set to music. And if that’s not going to come, then I’d rather spend the money on something else. And I can’t ask a friend. I mean, I could. But I don’t want to have someone staring at the day through a lens instead of experiencing it firsthand. So I think my dream has slipped through my fingers. And I am sad sad sad.

Did you ever have a potential vendor just completely flake out? Tell me I’m not alone here.

Oh man, I’m the same way. I found a videographer I loved in Pittsburgh and they were the price of a small economy car. I haven’t found anyone of that caliber at a reasonable price point. Le sigh.

My dress lady is flaking out, and I need to know if she’s going to pull through in time to know if I need to buy a dress online.

We had our dream band fall threw less than 6 weeks before our wedding. Our second pick fell threw too less than two weeks before. Fortunately my Dad has DJ equipment to save us, but it still makes me mad. Oh, on top of it, someone said something about the music during the reception. Good luck finding what you’re looking for in your price range.

Keep looking, Miss L - you’ve still got a few more months and you might just randomly coming across the right company any day now! I had given up on videography, but thanks to a website much like your Craigslist over there, I think I might have a potential in the pipeline!

Oh man Miss Lox, I know how you feel… except times 6 or 7 months. It was so disappointing to be trying to give a vendor money and they can’t even bother to respond to you.

I really hope you have a happy ending to this (I wouldn’t call our ending happy, just relief that it’s was done).

I had 2 vendors never respond to requests for information! It was terrible, one was a photographer I was really interested in, but I guess they just didn’t need our business. In the end we found a wonderful photographer. So all’s well there. The other was this amazing bakery I heard rave reviews about. A phone call and two email requests went unanswered. I still don’t have a bakery…but I’m hopeful! So you should be too! You just never know.

Lox, finding a videographer was seriously going to make me pull my hair out. I finally found one with the right price, and then in his sample DVD he literally put his hand in front of the camera. OMG. What?!

It was stressful and down to the wire, but we ended up finding very sweet affordable videographers. Stick with it, you’ll find someone!

Yes, and it was my videographer. Be thankful that they flaked out on you before they got your money and not after your wedding.

I’m so happy to hear I’m not the only one! Fortunately the videographer who we love wrote us back and we are meeting tomorrow, but I hate that it took them so long to respond! :( Good videographers are very hard to come by! Good luck!

The wedding photographer that I had been following for 2 years before I was engaged and booked 1 year before our wedding called us 8 months before our wedding date to say she was pregnant and due around our wedding date. I was soo sooo sad since we couldn’t find someone that does her style of work. Thankfully she gave us enough notice but I definitely can relate to you. I don’t know where your located but the company http://www.lunchpailpictures.com does great work and they have reasonable prices.

Sorry to hear that, it’s always so disappointing to get all exited about something and then have it fall through like that…
But in the end videography is a plus - it’s not something major like catering or photography! I say to keep looking but without obsessing over it, as you’ve got the most important parts of your wedding covered!

Oh dear, so frustrating when you try to give someone your business and they can’t be bothered to be courteous. I’m sad you had to experience the elation of finding a reasonable vendor, getting the buy-in from the Mr. AND THEN be crushed with disappointment. I’m at that point with an invitation company, bye-bye affordable lettepress…

Had the same problem with photographers. I emailed several who I loved and never heard back from them. One was even a referral from a friend…. of course they took 5 months to get back their wedding pictures…. So I guess that tells you something.

what about you get someone who can take good raw footage, and then save up and get someone to edit it and put together a great video later?

you are NOT alone!! i found a photographer who’s blog i fell in LOVE with.. she was great with my first email and just when i was super interested (and told her) she just stopped responding.. i was really really bummed!! but honestly if they aren’t gonna get back to you for an inquiry, i can’t trust to them to keep up communications when crunch time comes!

Ahhh did you phone them? Perhaps their internet is down or they are away shooting and can’t respond to emails. Creative people are like that. 8 days is nothing so PHONE them. If they still don’t respond THEN, then you can change tack.

I remember first floating the idea of videography - I was nervous about it too, since it was so very important to me, and I worried that it was the kind of thing you had to have seen to understand. I really hope you get your videographer, I get what you mean about not wanting to stick a friend behind a lens all day, and about just wanting that beautiful highlights video.

A wedding coordinator did this to me. She had amazing reviews and seemed great when I chatted with her over video conference (I’m planning our wedding from afar). She also charged an affordable and fantastic rate for her day of coordination services.

The video conference was on a Sunday and during this conversation she said I automatically had priority to book her. I emailed her the very next day with a question to which she didn’t respond. I waited until Friday to follow up. She said she had been travelling so I let it go and emailed her back to book her (this is within the week time frame). She never responded. Finally a month later I played dumb and asked her sweetly if perhaps she didn’t get my email. No, I’m not that naive and I knew at this point that I wasn’t going to book such a flaky person to be our coordinator but I was just dying from curiosity to know why she had disappeared. She actually responded with a “what a shame. I never got your email but I have since booked someone else” line. I suspect that someone wanted to book her within the same week I contacted her but wanted a bigger package. Since she promised me priority for the week she took the shady way out and just pretended not to get my email. Oh well, I have since found a new day of coordinator that I’m excited to work with.

Oh, that is so poor! They could at least respond to you and let you know if they’re not able to work with you for whatever reason. It’s so annoying when you want to offer someone your business and therefore your money and they can’t be bothered. Sorry you’re having to deal with that, hope it works out ok for you!
