Mrs. Hot Wings's Picture
Mrs. Hot Wings, Chicago/San Diego Age and Occupation: 28, Professor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Instructor Engagement Date: December 20, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Ocean View Villas/Jasmine Seafood Restaurant About Me: I am a psychology grad student living in Chicago and planning my wedding to a fellow psych grad student. I am a Sunny So-Cal bred gal who trudged across the country to follow her love of psychology and ended up finding a partner in the process. I am overly passionate about anything I involve myself with. I am an activist, a foodie, a reality TV watching junkie, an over-analyzer, a photography obsesser, and am utterly cheesy to the core. This is a story of what happens when a boy and a girl meet, fall in love over academic dorkiness, and a shared love for life. We (mostly I) are planning our semi-destination wedding in my hometown of San Diego. We are excited to bring our families and friends together from across our lifespans to celebrate our future in a grand 400+ person culturally blended affair!

Then and Now: Hot Wings Edition

February 15th, 2011 @ 2:27 pm by Mrs. Hot Wings

Growing up, I didn’t dream about my wedding day. I didn’t play bride with pillow case veils or any of that. It wasn’t until I went through old photos for this post that I realized that my youth prepared me for my wedding day duties. Despite my lack of wedding day dreams, I have been preparing for it all my life.

Back in the day, I was a pretty intense kid. I spent my mornings practicing for the Olympic medal I was certain I would one day win. My parents told me I started skating at too late an age to win one, but I told them they were wrong. I was stubborn as all heck. When they told me our family couldn’t afford the fancy figure skating outfits I needed for competition, I learned how to bead my own dresses and went to town. I glued crystals. I hand sewed sequins. I even designed many of my competition dresses.

After school, I spent my time practicing for Tall Falls aka Color Guard aka Winter Guard. See that ugly unitard on the left? Before this iteration of the outfit, there was a single sleeve that had black and yellow stripes. Everyone made fun of us and said we looked like bumble bees. It looks like it was always in the cards for me to become a bee, huh?

A quick search of YouTube brought up this video! It’s the field show we performed my senior year in high school. Oh, the memories. I really loved performing. All these performances growing up really helped to prepare my nerves for my future as an educator and a bride. There’s no reason to fear being  in perfect makeup and a beautiful, expensive gown when you’ve worn little itty bitty figure skating outfits and bumble bee unitards in front of hundreds of people. Don’t even get me started on the number of times I’ve fallen in these get ups in front of people. Thank goodness digital videos are much harder to come by than scanning photos!

In preparation for my senior prom, I decided that I didn’t want my wedding day to be the only time I would wear white. While all my peers searched for red dresses so they could be THAT lady in the song “Lady in Red” by Chris de Burgh. I wanted to be different.

With all this training, I was able to bead hair pieces, make veils, wear white, and be stared at without a problem. I’ve compiled this next collage as evidence of my preparation for white.

Has anyone else been preparing for their wedding day in ways they never knew about?

i don’t remember wearing too much white, let alone dresses, once i hit the 4th grade. i was an all-pants and only pants kinda girl until just about recently. but i was in color guard for a year and performing in full make up in front of hundreds of people have definitely come in handy. if i can manage to finish a routine after having dropped a flag while marching without blinking an eye then i can do just about anything!

Yay colorguard and winterguard! Somehow 10 years of performing still left me nervous on my walk down the aisle. Maybe I didn’t feel like I was in uniform enough.

Love your skating pics, adorable!

Oh my gosh, you are so cute! LOVE your prom picture =) I wore white to my boyfriend’s senior prom. I got a lot of ish for it because I was the only girl in white and I wasn’t even a senior. Oh, memories…

I love this post for many reasons, mainly your intensity! Go Dr. Hot Wings! I can completely picture you gluing crystals and sewing sequins at age 10 with total determination.

I was in winterguard too! Mt. Carmel was pretty good, right? My high school’s guard was terrible. And we had to wear brown leotards for drill and pepto bismol pink dresses for winterguard. Blech.

Gaw… look at all the flag ladies coming out! Woot woot. I should have known you all were out there.
@Mrs. Hot Cocoa: I guess we were ok. We did go to Nationals in Dayton, OH. I remember our coach made our outfits white unitards b/c he said we were all skinny and he wanted to show us off. Creepy right?@Mrs. Buttons: Dude, I fell on my butt all the time!

Too funny about all the white outfits. After wearing white gowns to 2 formal dances in a row, my mom put the kibash on a 3rd. “No more ‘bride’ dresses!”

I’m impressed! I NEVER wear white, I blame it on looking pasty as when I do.. so I think this wedding dress is going to be the first time I have worn it in I don’t know HOW long!
