An Uninvited Guest

Apologies if I venture into TMI territory here, but I promised myself that I’d blog frankly here on Weddingbee, so here we go.

You know that thing, that thing that happens to most adult females on a regular basis, that thing that you really don’t want to deal with on the day when you’re wearing a very expensive white dress?

Yeah, that’s going to happen to me.

When I walk down that aisle in May, I am going to have my period. There’s no way around it. My periods come pretty much like clockwork, and I am 100% sure that it will come either the day before or the day of the wedding.

Ugh.

I used to take hormonal birth control but I didn’t like the things it did to my body (major weight gain, horrible headaches), so I stopped. I’d really prefer not to go back on it again just to delay my period. I’ve done some research to see if there is any natural way to delay a period, but I haven’t been able to find anything from a reputable source.

If I don’t delay my period, I’ve got to find a way to minimize its symptoms.

I get hardcore PMS, and I don’t want to spend the already stressful days leading up to the wedding being extra pissy and bloated. On the first and second days of my periods, I get terrible cramps, cramps that make me want to curl up in the fetal position and cry for a few hours (and like I said above, my wedding will be on the first or second day of my cycle). And my flow is also at its heaviest on the first or second day, which means that I won’t be able to relax. I will be so paranoid and worried about my white dress that I’ll probably want to run to the bathroom every ten minutes.

So how do I combat these symptoms? Well, I’m not sure if I can fight the PMS. I can try to drink a lot of water and avoid sodium to keep the bloating to a minimum, but I don’t know how not to be an emotional mess. The cramps? I don’t know. I love Aleve for headaches and body pains, but it has never worked on my cramps. Neither has any other over-the-counter pain medication, and I don’t want to take anything stronger, for fear of ending up like Sam’s sister on Sixteen Candles after she took four muscle relaxers.

The fun starts at about 30 seconds in.

The one thing that seems to work are these Thermacare Menstrual heat pads.

As long as my dress isn’t skin-tight (which it won’t be), I don’t think it’ll show. I can hide it under my a-line skirt and feel soothing warmth on my tummy all day long.

And the white dress issue? Well, I’ve read amazing things about the Diva Cup, so I ordered it and will give it a try next month.

You only have to change it every 12 hours, so I could presumably get through the entire ceremony and reception without having to worry about leakage or changing a tampon while wearing a puffy white dress.

If I take all of these precautions, maybe I’ll have a fairly stress-free, symptom-free period. I hope. I hope. I hope.

Have you had to deal with having your period on your wedding day? Did you delay it or try to combat the symptoms? And if anyone has any advice or reviews on the Diva Cup, I’m all ears!

I use the Diva cup and have for a couple of years now- one nice thing I’ve noticed is my cramps are a lot less severe when I use it. Just make sure you practice a bit before the wedding. It can be a trick to get it positioned right (wear liners until you get it figured out for your body).

seriously I’d find a different RX just for that reason alone. I skip mine every other month and adore it. Also drink tea something in it combats bloating.

I was in the same boat as you for my wedding (which also means you will have to deal with this during your honeymoon!) During that time of the month, my skin also breaks out - which is not good for your wedding day!!

I am on Birth Control, so my fix was easy - skip that week of pills and skip that fun time of the month!

Never hears of the Diva cup, but I’m a fan of the heat wraps!

Good luck to you!!!

I also think you should try birth control again. You may have just been using the wrong type for you. (I have heard that sometimes you have to try a few different brands before you find the right one)… Of course you don’t have too much time before your wedding so if you go this route you should probably see a doctor soon!

I faced this EXACT problem at my own wedding. I too did not like taking BC because of what it did to my body, but I went on it for a few months right before the wedding because I realized it would be starting the day before the wedding and last several days into the honeymoon and I didn’t want to deal. I went off it again right after.

I use a menstrual cup (The Keeper) and it does take a few months to get the hang of insertion, knowing when to change it, etc. I usually change it once in the morning and once at night, but on my heaviest day I need to change it at least one additional time. It can overflow and leak, but the GREAT thing about it (and I realize I’m getting into TMI territory) is that you can tell exactly how much you’re bleeding when you empty it and over the course of a few months, you really have a much better understanding of the quantity and timing of your flow. I feel like tampons don’t really tell you much besides “I’m bleeding heavily today.” I’ve only ever had one near-disaster with it.
By the way, I’m SUPER squeamish and could not have imagined myself talking about this stuff before. I held off on using the Keeper for years because of that squeamishness. I’m SO glad I made the switch and I got over any and all hesitation about using it after the first month.

That really stinks. I hope it all works out well.
I use the Diva cup and it works well and I agree with Fayette that you will need to get used to it and the positioning. I would never go back to using tampons.

I am in the same boat, should start mine the day after the wedding so the honeymoon should be super-fun (insert sarcasm here). I also went off BC because it made me less-intimate feeling and I am thinking of going back on for a couple months just to avoid this. But I HATE BC…I may just deal with it. Plus we want to have a baby right away so going back on would delay that. :(

Have you tried Motrin for cramps? It’s the only thing that will work for me (even Midol doesn’t help).

Oh please, save yourself so much trouble, discomfort, and worry and go back on the pill for a few months. You just need to find a different one like many have said before.

I agree with @hellorebecca - maybe you just weren’t on the right pill. I tried like 4 or 5 before I got the right one..you have a couple of months to play around with it…

Either way - those devices you listed - the diva cup and thermal pad seem like great solutions. Have you ever tried Midol?

And thanks - I have not yet done the calculations and have no clue if my uninvited guest will be at my wedding!

as an alternative, you could get the “morning after” pill — it’s a slam-dunk of hormones that will shift everything up (or at least “off).

Before I got an IUD, I used the NuvaRing and it was AWESOME. such a low dosage, it didn’t give me the slug-o-rama feelings that other hormonal BCs did….

Just an FYI- My Diva Cup got stuck. I had to go to the hospital to get it removed. It took 2 different people to un-suction it. And it hurt like &!@#

The nurses beggggged me to never use that again (and wondered why I put it in in the first place :-)

Because my cycle is so bad, I consciously delay mine to come about every 3 months. BC works for me! I use the NuvaRing. The hormones last at least 4 weeks.

Good luck!

I am SO there with you on not taking birth control…

And that really is too bad about dear aunt flo coming to the wedding…

My sister who suffers from SEVERE periods takes pills called “SLOW FLOW”, you can get them from naturopathic doctors or maybe at a specialty health store. They get rid of the yuck symptoms from periods… and slow down your bleeding naturally! There from a company called “Vitanica”. They worked wonders for her!

thanks, sloth: i’m at work (shh) and my moniter got stuck for a few seconds on that image of the diva cups. thanks a lot.

i’ll be interested to hear what you end up doing (in a totally non-creepy way) - i feel like this is a big issue in the hive, and it’s always good to hear the feedback this type of post ellicits.

Have you ever thought about giving the Nuva Ring a try? You can insert them back to back so you could change the date of your period. It can be used in the short term - and at least this way the hormones aren’t ingested so very little (if any) makes it into your system.

As for the Diva Cup, I use it and love it!! It does take a couple of cycles to get used to inserting it properly, but eventually you figure it out and it’s smooth sailing after that :)

aw, that’s too bad. There’s no way I can handle my period during the craziness that will happen my wedding weekend so I will use birth control to push it forward which I would really suggest you do. Your body may have had a bad reaction to the one you tried but they really are all different so it’s just a matter of finding what works for your body, they can also help with the pain and cramps. Talk to your doctor and see what they say.
Also, I use excedrin menstrual complete for pain and it is the BEST! give it a try :)
goodluck!
